Instead of putting money into regular maintenance of the Tintabs...perhaps the Town Council could initiate a scheme for local crowd-funding fora modern replacement for the Tintabs.
Put the feelers out to see whether local builders' suppliers, architects and local businesses could supply discounted materials/services.....it would create good advertising.

I've heard two notions on why Tintabs is so called..
1.The first is that 'Tab' is short for 'Tabernacle'....a container for storing church/synagogue documents/relics...but there appears to be no history of the Tintabs being used for religious purposes....and it's made from timber, not tin..
2. Another idea is that the shelter was used for recreational/breaks by the occupants of the nearby workhouse.
It is said that residents sat in the Tintabs smoking during their free time.
Their tobacco was kept in a tin, in which that also kept their roll-ups (tabs)...hence the in-mates went to the shelter with their tin of tabs for a smoke...later the shelter acquired the corrupted name Tintabs in recognition of such behaviour.
Or is there another reason?
