BRIGG THEN AND NOW - A SCENE OF REGENERATION

The above picture, thought to date from the 1980s, shows derelict cottages just off Brigg town centre. Below we see the cottages as they look today,  having been modernised some years ago.
With few exceptions,  the old courtyard cottages in which much of the Brigg population lived during Queen Victoria's reign, were swept away from the 1930s through to the 1960s.
Families were rehoused, many to the Newlands and Springbank housing estates built by Brigg Urban District Council.
The old cottages of the courtyards were not built with "all mod cons."
A tap near the front door provided the water supply and had to be used to fill the tin bath people used for washing.
In the worst cases, rows of "privies" at the end of the yard had to be shared by many households, or the contents of the cottage's back yard "privy" were collected late on Friday night by the "Dilly Men" and their cart.
