BRIGG SPORTSMEN IN YORKSHIRE LEAGUE CUP FINAL
Football teams from Brigg and Barnetby recently appeared in end-of-season cup finals, and now they have been joined by a side from the town's hockey club.
The Brigg Men's 4th XI played in a Yorkshire League divisional cup final, drawing 1-1 with Sheffield Hallam 7ths after full time but losing 3-2 in a penalty flick shoot-out.
Veteran goalkeeper Andrew 'Sass' Markham has sent Brigg Blog the following report...
The curtain came down on the Brigg men's 4th team's season with a memorable, though ultimately disappointing, divisional cup final against a very good Sheffield side at Halifax on Saturday.
In a first half of few chances Sheffield took the lead on 20 minutes when the Brigg defence were caught out by a quickly-taken free hit, which was swept into the net by an unmarked winger.
Brigg, to their credit, came storming back minutes later when man of the match Ian Vandenburg Slowe fed Simon Weightman inside the Sheffield area who slotted home passed the advancing keeper.
The second half was much the same with the lively Sheffield attack being well marshalled.
The game ended 1-1 and went to penalty flicks. Your correspondent, in the Brigg goal, saved Sheffield's first two penalties and at 2-0 had visions of a win, but it wasn't to be as a mis-hit signalled a Sheffield comeback and they won 3-2.
A great effort by a Brigg team containing five teenagers and three 60-year-olds!
