HISTORIC BRIGG PUB OFFERING GROG, RATIONS AND BUNKS

One of the flagship pubs in Brigg Town centre has a nautical message for potential customers.
The fact that "grog, rations and bunks" are available at the Lord Nelson Hotel is now included under a portrait of the Royal Navy legend who famously triumphed against the combined fleet assembled by Spain and France, but lost his life, at The Battle of Trafalgar in October 1805.
Yet Admiral Lord Nelson's famous phrase "I really do not see the signal" before acting contrary to orders at another battle certainly does not apply to The Old Mill Brewery, Snaith.
For the owner of the Brigg Market Place hostelry obtained detailed planning permission from North Lincolnshire Council for new signs.
Its original proposal was rejected, as the council felt it was not in keeping with a listed building and the conservation area.
However, a revised scheme was given the go-ahead by planners. 
Can we call that a Victory for the Nelson?
For centuries, those serving in the Royal Navy were given daily grog rations (tots of rum).
This practice was discontinued in 1970 but there are still some former Navy personnel living in Brigg and district who can remember enjoying this tradition.
Today's Lord Nelson offers food, drink and accommodation - explaining the reference to rations and bunks on the pub sign, as well as grog.
