BRIGG TOWN'S CUP RUNNETH OVER & BARNETBY SIDES ENJOYED SUNDAY FOOTBALL

A successful Brigg Town Football Club team pictured at The Hawthorns in the 1970s - see Nigel Fisher's Brigg Blog

Following the considerable interest generated by Brigg Blog's picture of a local football team from the 1970s we shared with you last weekend, here's another from our archive's sporting section.
This time, rather than showing Ancholme Wanderers at the Recreation Ground, it's Brigg Town FC at the nearby Hawthorns.
We don't think this picture has been published previously; it has just surfaced - quite by chance - after all these years.
Brigg Town are being presented with a trophy by league official Bill Turner, from Scunthorpe.
Zebras' manager Brian Stratford is on the right of the group, alongside his players.
Defender 'Big Baz' Martin is kneeling on the left of the front row, next to club chairman Harry Williams. It looks like committee man Charlie Petch on the extreme left.
Note the advert for Bowness & Gray on the wooden stand at the far side of the ground.
This picture was taken as Coun Bryan Robins (out of shot on the left) was doing a front-on shot for that week's Lincolnshire & South Humberside Times. Bryan was a long-serving president of Brigg Town FC.
Keen-eyed viewers will note that the houses on South View Avenue are clearly visible; post-war prefabs occupying that end of Woodbine Grove (beyond the hawthorn hedge) had already been removed.
Judging from the light and the resulting grainy appearance of the picture, it may well have been taken immediately after a midweek cup final.
Doubtless the trophy was taken into the clubhouse soon after this presentation and filled to the brim to toast the club's success. Brigg had quite a team back then!

Below - courtesy of Lee Fielden - is a Barnetby Sunday side of the past. Second from the right, front row, is Joe Henderson, of Henderson Insurance fame; in the flat cap is player Bru Rawson's father. Below that image are a couple more showing railway village Sunday sides in years gone by...
