BRIGG TOWN MISS OUT ON CUP FINAL SPOT WHILE BARNETBY ARE BEATEN IN INJURY TIME

Yesterday (Saturday, March 16) proved to be a poor one in terms of results for Brigg and Barnetby football teams.
At The Hawthorns, Brigg Town lost 2-1 when hosting arch-rivals Lincoln Moorlands Railway in a Lincolnshire Supplementary Cup semi-final. Reece Moody netted for the Zebras.
In the EC Surfacing Ltd Scunthorpe & District Football League first division, Briggensians lost 1-0 at home to College Wanderers while Barnetby United went down by the same scoreline away to Winterton side The Butchers Arms (report below and pictures here courtesy of Lee Fielden).
However, table-topping Barnetby United Reserves kept up their strong challenge for the championship with a 3-0 home win over Sherpa at Silver Street, the goals coming from Liam Dawson (2) and Josh Goodman.
Local football fans should note that Briggensians will be in league action on Tuesday night (March 19) when they host second-placed Scotter United (7.30pm KO).

KILLER BLOW IN INJURY TIME

The Railwaymen (Barnetby) came within minutes of securing a hard-fought point at Winterton before being cruelly left with nothing.
A 92nd minute Jonty Jackson goal settled the game and secured the points for The Butchers Arms.
The game, fought out in blustery conditions at Newport Drive, was certainly no footballing spectacle but Barnetby stood up manfully to all that The Butchers could throw at them.
With the wily Mcphee partnering Will Hartley up top - keeping the Butchers backline on their toes - it certainly wasn’t all one-way traffic.
Greg Brackenbury and Sam Thirkell both had chances as they cut in off their respective wings and keeper Dobbs, with a booming kick carried by the strong wind, registered a shot on target.
The second half saw Barnetby defending up hill and into the breeze but Shaun Clark and Alex Green at the heart of the defence, flanked by Declan Clarke and Scott Gowing, stood firm and repelled all that was thrown at them. In front of them, Will Dawson and Craig Hall fought manfully with the Butchers midfield.
Butchers struck an upright and despite having the majority of the play it looked as though their luck was out and that Barnetby would claim a vital point.
Football can be a cruel game, though, and with the clock running down deep in injury time, a hopeful ball wasn’t dealt with and left Jackson with the easiest of tap-ins.
