BRIGG BLOG UPDATE: BARNETBY RAILWAY STATION ALTERATIONS
Brigg folk wanting to travel further afield by train must get themselves over to Barnetby, except on Saturdays when our station receives passenger trains provided by the Northern company.
For several months Barnetby station has been having all its platforms altered to allow larger freight containers to pass through.
Network Rail's extensive project is scheduled for completion this month, and Barnetby railway campaigner Dave Barrett kindly took these pictures recently, on our behalf.
Some car parking spaces have also been marked out, including a couple for use by drivers with disabilities.
Barnetby station is the largest in North Lincolnshire, with passenger trains running not only along the Brigg Line (on Saturdays) but to Grimsby and Cleethorpes, Manchester and Doncaster (via Scunthorpe) and Newark (through Lincoln).
Freight trains run between Immingham, Killingholme, Scunthorpe (imported iron ore for the steelworks) and Drax (biomass).
Last October/early November we spent a couple of weeks working at the Grimsby Telegraph, involving a morning bus ride to Barnetby to catch a train.
Friendly Network Rail staff were on the Barnetby station footbridge, handing out leaflets explaining all about the project to alter the platforms and apologising to passengers because some trains had to be diverted to different platforms.
