BRIGG TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB'S BIGGEST-EVER WIN?

Local football historian Lee Fielden, from Barnetby, wonders whether he has unearthed the biggest win in Brigg Town Football Club's very long history.
Researches among old newspaper reports by the former Brigg Town cricketer and ex-Sir John Nelthorpe School pupil have located an 18-0 victory for Brigg Town in the first round of the Lincolnshire Challenge Cup.
Town - founded in the 1860s - thrashed Brigg Grammar School 18-0 on January 28, 1882.
According to the match report, the school team was weakened by the fact that "masters" (teachers) were debarred from playing in this competition.
The pupils played "very pluckily" but had their backs to the wall for the entire match.
Brigg Town's top performers were H. Hett, J. Bartle and G. Carr, with Young, O. Hett and W. Denton gaining a mention on the school side.
The newspaper was fully justified in using the headline Extraordinary Result.
The tie was played at the Town Club ground in Brigg, which we think may have been near the railway station.
Town later played behind the Brocklesby Ox, before switching to The Hawthorns circa 1960.
Elsewhere in the first round of the Lincolnshire Challenge Cup in 1882, Grimsby Town beat Brigg Ancholme 5-3, while Brigg Britannia lost 1-0 to Barton Town.
The draw for round two was carried out in Brigg - venue unknown, but probably on licenses premises!
Grimsby Town - originally Grimsby Pelham - had only been in existence for a few years in 1882 and did not gain admission to the Football League for a further 10 years,

Brigg Grammar School was enlarged in 1878 with the imposing boarding house added not long after.
Staff often bolstered school teams in sporting fixtures, with headmaster Richmond Flowers a notable cricketer of this period when Queen Victoria reigned over Britain and its Empire across the seas.
Lee now  tell us that Bob Taylor has no record of a greater win by Brigg Town FC. Bob served the club for many years as an official and has extensive historical information about the club stretching back many years. 
Lee has also acquired the interesting football medal pictured below. J.W. Watts was a Brigg Town FC committee member, elected to the North Lindsey League committee at a meeting held at the town's Nelthorpe Arms pub in 1923.  He later served Frodingham Athletic, Scunthorpe.
