BRIGG MISSES OUT BY ONE DAY ON CHRISTMAS EXTRA

Although Brigg Blog reckons the current refuse collection service is second to none when compared to how things operated years ago, we have to point out that households in our town are not going to enjoy a Christmas period extra being granted to properties in other parts of North Lincolnshire.
Many homes elsewhere will be permitted to put out an extra black bag of general waste which will be taken away when their wheelie bins are emptied.
However, this worthy Christmas bonus is not going to apply in Brigg. Instead, all out festive waste will have to be fitted into standard wheelie bins to be collected on Monday, December 31 (note: not Tuesday, January 1 due to it being a bank holiday).
Brigg Blog has pointed out to the council that although it is emptying Brigg's burgundy recycling bins on Christmas Eve, the vast majority of festive period general waste is generated on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. So we could certainly make use of an extra black bag for disposing of left-overs, etc.
While the council is to be applauded for agreeing to accept an extra bin bag of rubbish from certain households in North Lincolnshire, this concession only applies to those being emptied on December 27, 28 and 29. This is because such households will have to go ONE extra day - 15 instead of 14 - to have their bins emptied.
Meanwhile, Brigg folk will have wait five days after Boxing Day for the next collection, with no extra sack of rubbish then being accepted.
The council responded by confirming that the 'extra bag' policy won't apply to Brigg residents, as the gap between our collections is the usual 14 days.
It explained: "In previous years we've changed the bin collections over Christmas vastly to incorporate an extra general waste collection. While you might now panic thinking, 'what will I do with my Xmas rubbish?' with no extra collection, looking at the data from the past few years, what we've seen is that many residents don't put their bin out for this extra collection, and, when they do, the amount of waste produced over the two collections is the largely the same as a usual 14 day collection, and would fit in their bins and boxes.
"So this year, we've tried to keep it very simple and stick as close to usual collections as possible.
"If residents have extra recycling, this can be taken to a 'bring bank' - usually at supermarkets or community centre car parks, or to a Household Recycling Centre. Extra tins and cans can be placed in a plastic bag and put out for collection with your green box. We can't collect glass this way due to health and safety so residents may want to take all their tins and other metals out the green box and put them in a carrier bag and save the green box for just the glass."
The council having made a reasoned argument and this being the season of goodwill, Brigg Blog won't be labouring the point, and is running (below) the entire statement sent to us.
However, we have suggested that, in future years, it might like to extend the very welcome extra black bag offer to every household in its area.

Changes to bin and box collections over Christmas

Over the festive period, waste and recycling collections will change due to the bank holidays. Check your collection calendar carefully to make sure you don’t miss your bin day.
If your usual bin day is Tuesday, your collections due on Christmas Day (25 December) and New Year’s Day will be collected one day earlier, on Monday 24 December (Christmas Eve) and Monday 31 December (New Year’s Eve).
If your usual bin day is Wednesday, your collection due on Boxing Day (26 December) will be collected one day later on Thursday 27 December.
Thursday and Friday collections on Christmas week will be collected one day later on Friday 28 December and Saturday 29 December respectively.
Collections on Wednesday 2, Thursday 3 and Friday 4 January will take place as normal.
For those residents who are waiting an extra day because their general waste collections have been put back a day, they can leave an extra black bag of rubbish next to their bin when they put it out for collection on 27, 28 or 29 December.
To help us keep on top of your waste and recycling collections over Christmas, brown garden waste bins will not be collected between Monday 17 December to Friday 11 January.

North Lincolnshire Council’s cabinet member responsible for waste, Cllr Neil Poole, said: “Having taken feedback from our customer usage, and working with our staff and the unions, we’ve improved our Christmas waste and recycling collections this year and we’re keeping as close as possible to our usual collection schedule to avoid confusion and minimise disruption for residents.
“For those residents who are waiting a day longer for their collection and may have extra waste that won’t fit in the bin after Christmas, we’ll be collecting an extra bag with their collections scheduled for 27, 28 and 29 December.”
You can also take extra waste and recycling to any of our Household Recycling Centres. The centres will be open as normal each day, apart from Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Our recycling centres in Winterton, Goxhill and Belton will open an extra day on Thursday 27 December, from 10am to 4pm.
