VERY UNUSUAL VICTORY FOR BRIGG TOWN CRICKETERS KEEPS CUP HOPES ALIVE

Brigg Town Cricket Club kept alive hopes of reaching the semi-finals of a knockout competition with a very unusual victory at the Recreation Ground yesterday (Saturday, June 8).
Bidding to claim a place in the knockout stages of the Lincolnshire County Cricket League's Supplementary Cup, Brigg defeated Scunthorpe Town 3rds in a bowl-out at the stumps.
Brigg had reduced the visitors to 23 for four in driving rain. But as the "Flaming June" weather became even worse, umpire John Preston led the teams from the field with only 13 overs of the scheduled 30 being possible in the visitors' innings.
As there was no prospect of completing the required number of overs, a bowl-out followed against undefended stumps - in accordance with competition rules - and Brigg came out on top.
This result means Brigg, Haxey 2nds, Messingham 2nds and Scunthorpe 3rds have all now taken five points from their opening two matches in Supplementary Cup Group B.
So, with one game remaining for each team, any of them could take top spot and make the semi-finals.
Yesterday saw very little play across the Lincolnshire League because of rain.
Among matches abandoned was the Division One encounter involving Broughton's first teamers, who reached 25 for two in eight overs against Messingham before play was abandoned.
Hibaldstow were rained off at Market Rasen 2nds in Division Two without a ball being bowled.
Broughton 2nds lost their Supplementary Cup Group C match at Barton Town 2nds.  With Barton 50 for two when rain stopped play, a bowl-out was held, which Barton won.

Our pictures show scenes at Brigg Recreation Ground yesterday afternoon, with Scunthorpe Town's fifth wicket batsmen leaving the field after play was abandoned and Brigg players putting the protective covers on the square.
