BRIGG REMEMBERS ALL HOLOCAUST VICTIMS


This picture, taken in the Angel Courtyard in Brigg today, shows the Holocaust Book of Remembrance open for people to sign. A service was conducted yesterday afternoon at the Memorial.

ONE OF BRIGG LIFE'S LITTLE MYSTERIES

How is it that with parking restrictions on some Brigg side-streets, the A18 Wrawby Road remains free of double-yellow lines?
Previously on Brigg Blog we mentioned cars parked (quite legally) outside Sir John Nelthorpe Lower School (the former High School), holding up traffic on one lane of a main road.
Today we observed a car not far from the cemetery - same end result. We were going to say it was "parked" but someone was in the driver's seat. So maybe "stopped" would be a more appropriate term.
We've got to concede that you don't see all that many vehicles parked up along Wrawby Road, which is probably why the council has never bothered with double-yellow lines.
"Policing" no parking restrictions along this lengthy stretch of road would also be difficult.
On most days, traffic enforcement officers could walk the entire length from The Monument to Churchill Avenue without spotting any parked cars.
But does that make it right?

BRIGG PETROL SUPPLY WARNING

The Bridge Street petrol station in Brigg is closed today and will be shut for several more by the look of it.
Workmen appear to be replacing the pumps on the forecourt.
The area is fenced off on "Elf and Safety" grounds.
But please note that the handy shop/kiosk remains open for the sale of sweets, drinks, cigarettes, groceries and other goods.
A sign outside suggests the petrol station should be back in action on Friday.
If, like me, you prefer not to use the pumps at Tesco's store in Brigg then don't forget there's a traditional petrol station available just as you enter Hibaldstow.
Good range of pumps, pay in the kiosk, no messing about.

BRIGG JUBILEE ENTERTAINMENT BEING CONSIDERED


A long wish list was compiled of events Brigg might consider as part of celebrations for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on Monday, June 4.
The list was presented for consideration at a second public meeting held in the Angel Suite.
It should be stressed that what follows are proposals and are not bound to go ahead. 
Brigg Blog is also listing only SOME of the events  – not them all.
Some events are earmarked for the Market Place, others for the Recreation Ground.
COMPETITIONS: Art, best handwriting, dog/pet show, busking,
balloon race, best-dressed shop windows, splat the rat.
MAIN RING: Brass band, drum majorettes, sheep dogs, clowns, athletics, tug of war, Morris dancing, karate, it’s a knockout, five-a-side football, line dancing, judo.
SIDESHOWS/ACTIVITIES: Beer tent, Punch and Judy, face-painting, singing, cream tees, bouncy castles, donkey rides, sheep dog demonstration, welly wanging, classic cars, traction engines, old tractors, art exhibition, fashion show, children’s rides, fashion show, stalls, jugglers, lucky dip, stocks.
EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES: Queen of the Carnival (and attendants), formal dance (in the Angel), WI cake stalls, flower display.
APPROXIMATE SUGGESTED TIMES: 11.30am to 1pm, community picnic, with entertainment, in the Market Place; 12.30pm, parade starts to form up in Bridge Street, near the County Bridge; 1pm, parade passes through the Market Place, along Wrawby Street, down Queen Street, past The Monument and down Wrawby Road to the Recreation Ground; 2pm onwards and throughout the afternoon, events at the Rec.
Coun Ben Nobbs, chairman of the committee formed this week in the Angel Suite to co-ordinate the Jubilee celebrations, stressed  every effort would be made “not to clash” with what Brigg District Lions provide during their Summer Fair, later in June.

BRIGG COUNCILLORS NEED EXTRA TIME TO DECIDE


Brigg Town Council is seeking more time to consider its response to a planning application for an area just off the Market Place.
Permission is being sought to build eight town houses, two maisonettes, four flats and three shops, in what is described as a mixed use development close to the Market Place, Cary Lane and Spring’s Way.
Coun Ben Nobbs, chairman of Brigg Town Council’s Planning and Environment Committee, described it as a big development in the centre of the town “with many issues.” 
He suggested they should ask North Lincolnshire Council for a week’s extension to the deadline for responses to the application.
“That will give us time to go and look at the site,” he told fellow councillors at their meeting in the Angel Suite.

BRIGG PEDESTRIAN ZONE AT CROSSROADS?



Would the Brigg town centre pedestrian area be safer and more pleasant for shoppers if a more stringent and rigorously "policed" restriction was introduced to stop vehicles driving through at core times on the busiest days?
Many complaints are voiced about the number of cars, vans and lorries encountered in the pedestrian zone by shoppers who often need to get out of the way to let vehicles squeeze past.
Some vehicles are making legitimate deliveries to business premises, a number of which do not enjoy the benefit of rear access. But Brigg Town Council is sufficiently concerned to debate the issue and  “have a view to suggest“ restrictions could be considered.
The North Lincolnshire authority, which oversees highways and town centres and enforces traffic management measures, would need to make the final decision, if asked to do so.
During the town council discussions this week it was suggested no vehicles between 10am and 2pm on market days would be a step in the right direction. 10am to 4pm was also mentioned.
Town councillors were being asked to consider whether the Traffic Regulation Order is “sufficiently robust to protect pedestrians in the pedestrianised area.”
Coun Julian Kidd gave an example of a market day when vans had been pushing through crowds of people, resulting in complaints by shoppers and creating a situation he considered to be extremely dangerous.
Coun Jenny Bell pointed out that some businesses could not choose when deliveries were made to their shops, while Coun Chris Dyson highlighted the need for vehicular access to be maintained to some residential premises within the zone.
Coun Mel Oades won widespread agreement when he suggested Brigg businesses needed to be consulted first, to gauge their responses.
Many of the vehicles we encounter in the pedestrian area, of course, are not commercial, but belong to lazy folk taking short-cuts, including cashpoint-users.
At tea-time on Tuesday night this week I parked up near Lidl and walked through the Market Place on my way to The Loft, in Wrawby Street, for the Business Partnership meeting. It may have been a very quiet January night in the middle of the week, but THREE vehicles were observed in the town centre. We've said it before, and we'll say it again: All this goes on within full view of the CCTV cameras. Yet how many prosecutions do we hear about? 
In many town centres, deliveries to commercial premises must be undertaken during specific hours of the day, restrictions being in place to keep the pedestrian areas traffic-free during shop opening hours. In some places there are bollards that are raised and lowered at certain times to allow, or restrict, vehicular access.
Many of us would be sorry to see that introduced in Brigg - for the reasons stated by Coun Jenny Bell. Most of our traders are small, independent and unable to dictate to head office when deliveries need to be made. What's required is a great British compromise, resulting in fewer vehicles about at the busiest times. Traders can help achieve this, but we also need a clampdown from North Lincolnshire Council on "Joe Public" visiting cashpoints in full view of the CCTV cameras.
The council needs to issue monthly updates outlining how many motorists have been fined and how much they had to fork out. This information should be issued to websites like Brigg Blog, Brigg People, Brigg Life,  www.thisisscunthorpe.co.uk and the council's own  www.northlincs.gov.uk - plus the printed Press like Brigg Matters, the Scunthorpe Telegraph and the Market Rasen Mail.
Once word gets round that the council "means business" and is clamping down, motorists will soon start to comply.
We took the above picture on a Sunday afternoon, just as it was starting to get dark, when all Brigg town centre shops were shut. We trust the driver had acceptable cause to be in the pedestrian area.

BRIGG WILL CROWN ITS JUBILEE QUEEN



About 30 people turned out for Wednesday night's Brigg Jubilee Committee meeting to continue with plans to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee on bank holiday Monday, June 4.
It was another heartening turn-out in the Angel Suite, although not quite as large as for the initial public meeting earlier in the month.
The plan is to have events in the Market Place in the morning, then hold a parade through the town centre, round The Monument and down Wrawby Road to the Recreation Ground, where further community events will be stated.
Here are a few of the items mentioned, considered and/or decided at Wednesday's meeting, taken from the minutes issued by Coun Sheila Boughey (PICTURED ABOVE), the committee's secretary:

MARKET PLACE
Brigg Spring Clean is scheduled for the week prior to the Jubilee Celebrations so it is hoped the town centre will be relatively litter free.
Coun Ben Nobbs has booked the bandstand and is in the process of booking the Market Place through the Highways Agency.
Because of health and safety concerns over erecting a solid structure to act as a banner over the County Bridge, Sheila Boughey has suggested having an arch of red, white and blue balloons attached to either side of the bridge with a banner going across with The Diamond Jubilee printed. Sheila  will be researching costs and reporting back to committee.
Barry Gray has been contracted to erect bunting in the town centre and is in consultation with the shops/businesses regarding flags in the posts normally used for Christmas Trees.
Suggestions were made that the Tourist Information Centre could fly a flag as well as decorating the Angel Balcony. Jane, from Jaylaurs, has kindly volunteered to organise the balcony decoration.
Gordon, of Gordon's Cards, had made note that he was already finding it difficult obtaining flags. It was suggested that we may need to look online, probably EBay for suppliers.
A best dressed window competition is suggested for all the shops.
The Methodist church is planning on decorating the church with bunting and messages to tie in with the celebrations.
Ben Nobbs suggested the use of a farm trailer as a stage as hiring the stage normally used is very expensive. Anne Spolton had some ideas of who we could contact as they have used them in the past and will be emailing the details to Sheila Boughey.
The trailer will be centrally sited in the Market Place so picnickers can form an arch around the stage.
Ben Nobbs will consult with businesses regarding "no through traffic" during the picnic and parade and if deemed necessary request a road closure for the times needed.
Questions were asked regarding the provision of chairs and tables for picnickers. Also, if tables were to be provided the possible purchase of Jubilee themed tablecloths.
The location for the Women's Institute and Mothers Union cream teas is still in question.
The Angel Courtyard may be an option but with the planned Library/Heritage centre work being carried out around that time it may not be available. It was suggested that maybe the WI/Mothers' Union may be able to serve cream teas in the afternoon at the Recreational Ground and the Church serve in the morning in the Church Hall.
A water boiler will be needed for use by the WI/Mothers' Union and the representatives from The Scouts and Guides felt they may be able to help.
First aid will be needed. Anne Eardley passed the St John Ambulance details to Sheila Boughey who will contact them regarding covering the celebrations and costs and report back to the committee.
It was also suggested contacting Chris Darlington of L.I.V.E.S. and asking if they would like to be involved.
Ben Nobbs is looking into the need for a PPL Performing Rights Licence.
The Women's Institute and Mothers' Union have all relevant Health and Hygiene certificates in place for their plans to serve cream teas.
Volunteers will be needed for the clearing of any litter after the picnic. Paul Edworthy, of the Foundry Church, kindly offered help from his parishioners to help with litter collection, and Ben Nobbs will arrange any collection of litter bags needed with North Lincs Council.
Ben Nobbs will be consulting with Market Place traders regarding the picnic and any issues that may arise.
The issue of communication between stewards and organisers on the day was raised, with either walkie-talkies or mobile phones suggested.
High visibility jackets would be needed and Ben Nobbs suggested we use the Brigg Town Councils jackets that are used during the Spring clean.

PARADE
Suggested that the Mayor and Lady Mayoress travel in an open top car.
Also taking part in the parade a Jubilee Queen and two young attendants in a horse-drawn carriage. The Jubilee Queen will be aged 18 upwards with younger attendants. The selection of the Queen and attendants must be an open selection and it is hoped that a group may take on this role.
Music for the parade to be supplied by the cadet band along with cadets marching and carrying the Union Jack flag.
Batons of steel cheerleaders.
Scouts and Guides
Koko Ryu Karate club as well as any other organisations/groups who may like to be involved.
Also decorated prams/bikes as well as children in fancy dress, accompanied by parents.
It was suggested by Jane Kitching that during previous Jubilee celebrations the National Anthem was played. It was felt this could be made a part of the town Mayors welcoming address to the celebrations.
Anne Eardley also suggested Bell Ringing.
Ben Nobbs has been in talks with the police and although many staff will be on leave for the bank holiday they are very happy to offer support in the form of special constables who will work with any police officers who are working that day.
A parade Marshall will be needed and Graham Slater has offered to consult with his warrant officer on this matter.

RECREATION GROUND
Ben Nobbs has booked the recreational ground and is just awaiting final confirmation.
Coun Rob Waltham has promised there will be no charge for the use of the recreational ground.
The top field has been suggested for parking with the possibility of using the car park at Nelthorpe school for overspill parking.
The Explorer scouts have very kindly offered their services as parking stewards.
Coun Rob Waltham has agreed to look into waiving parking costs in the Old Courts car park for the day of the celebrations, at the request of the committee. He will report back at the next meeting.
Signage will be needed two weeks prior to the event to warn car users of the parade and how it may effect them if they wish to travel through Brigg at the time of the parade. Also clear signs needed directing traffic to the car parking areas at the Recreational ground.
PA System and Continuity needed. Rachel Day was suggested and this will be looked into.
A large marquee has been booked for the serving of refreshments as well as any static displays. Timings needed on how long will take to erect so hopefully can be erected on the day with no need for overnight security.
Enquiries will need to be made regarding the opening of the toilet facilities on Cary Lane and at the Monument for the bank holiday.

Paul Edworthy, of  The Foundry Church, kindly offered the purchase and free distribution of bottled water to attendees to the celebrations and participants of the parade as and when the need arose.

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES
It was agreed that all interested groups would email Sheila Boughey with their plans for activities.
It was suggested that the fancy dress competition should be judged in the morning while the children's costumes were fresh.
Anne Eardley suggested sending leaflets to the schools to distribute to their students to notify them and their parents of the Fancy Dress competition.

CHURCH SERVICE OF THANKSGIVING
The suggestion was made to approach Father Dominic regarding the use of The Catholic Church as a venue for a service of Thanksgiving. Subject to discussion it is hoped a service will take place at a time to be decided on the Sunday the 3rd January, the day before the proposed Jubilee celebrations.

THE BEACON
Couns Carl Sherwood and  Rob Waltham have taken responsibility for organising the beacon and will report back at the next meeting.

OAK TREE
Anne Spolton reported that Sandringham Estate has grown oak trees specifically for the Jubilee Celebrations and are offering them free of charge to applicants who may wish to plant them within their town centre to commemorate the Jubilee.

FUNDING
Ben Nobbs reported that following the Full Town Council meeting held this past Monday, money has been set aside for funding of the Jubilee celebrations to the sum of £2000.
Coun Waltham also said there may be grants for further funding that can be applied for via North Lincolnshire Council and perhaps North Lincs Homes.
It was suggested that we might consider the purchase of a memento for each child in Brigg to celebrate the Jubilee. Ben Nobbs reported that this was mentioned at a recent ERNLCA meeting he had attended and a parish council of a local small village had purchased mugs for each child which had cost in the region of £3000. Ben will ask the town clerk Jeanette Woollard about costs for previous mugs bought for the millennium.

The vacant restaurant premises in Queen Street, Brigg – formerly Coleman’s –  are on offer to another entrepreneur looking to establish an eatery in the town centre, or perhaps convert the premises to other use, with the necessary planning permission. The award-winning Coleman's closed late last year.

PUBLIC QUESTION ABOUT BRIGG TESCO STORE PLANS

The value of Public Question Time at each month's Brigg Town Council meeting was demonstrated very well on Monday night in the Angel Suite.
Ken Harrison, an interested member of the public, went along to inquire whether Brigg Town Council might contact Tesco in an effort to get a response to rumours about its  recently approved new Brigg store being put on hold, or delayed, for some reason.
Tesco has now issued a statement to the Press (see link below).
Quite often no-one attends Public Question Time, which is a shame, as it's an open invitation for people to go along and raise issues of concern.
Once a year, in similar fashion, there's an Annual Town Meeting in Brigg, where an entire session is set aside in the Angel Suite for people to go along and have their say.
Democracy in action, but, sadly, also poorly attended, considering the number of town residents.
In due course, Brigg Blog will post details of the forthcoming Annual Town Meeting, just in case you have something you wish to get off your chest.

NARROW SQUEAK FOR BRIGG SQUIRREL

If a cat has nine lives, how many does your average Brigg grey squirrel enjoy?
For one of the pesky critters came very close to being squashed by my car as I drove down St Helen's Road yesterday morning. The squirrel shot across the road and into a hedge, making good its escape.
While visiting Sir John Nelthorpe Upper School, the other Saturday afternoon to take some football pictures, I spotted several grey squirrels darting about the trees close to Grammar School Road,  near the main entrance.

ONE SMALL STEP FOR NEW BRIGG STORE


Another potential hurdle in the preliminary work for Lidl's planned new Brigg store has been cleared. North Lincolnshire Council has granted advertisement consent to display illuminated and non-illuminated signs, three fascia, one sheet hoarding, one pole-mounted and one feature sign at the site off Atherton Way.

BARCLAYS APPLICATION LOOKS A BANKER TO SUCCEED


Brigg Town Council has raised no objections to Barclays Bank, sited on the corner of Cary Lane and the Market Place, installing air conditioning condensers, a CCTV camera and non-illuminated fascia hanging sign. North Lincolnshire Council planners now have the final say on whether to grant permission.

BRIGG HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL FOR RUSH OF VOLUNTEERS




Brigg Town Council is looking to undertake its annual Spring clean of town centre streets and the riverside, and to tackle litter in the Old River Ancholme, on Saturday, May 26. Volunteers will be needed, as in past years, and further details will be made available nearer the time. If you are interested, make a note of the date now. Group efforts, from within clubs and societies, will be particularly welcome.

BRIGG AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED


JIM ALLCROFT AND BRIGG CHILDREN'S CENTRE HONOURED

Brigg Town Council Clerk Jeanette Woollard today announced the following civic awards on behalf of the authority.

JOSEPH J. MAGRATH O.B.E. AWARD FOR PUBLIC VOLUNTARY SERVICE 2011
At the Brigg Town Council Meeting on Monday, the Policy Committee recommendation that the Joseph J. Magrath O.B.E. Award for Public Voluntary Service to the Community of Brigg, should be given to Mr. Jim Allcroft of 5, Churchill Avenue, Brigg, was ratified.
The award is given to Mr. Allcroft in recognition of his dedication and commitment in serving the needs of Senior Citizens of Brigg, as well as those who are less able than others.
The Town Mayor and Members of Brigg Town Council is fully aware of Mr. Allcroft’s tireless energy in his role as Chairman of the North LinKs Seniors Forum – Ancholme Area Branch, and his dogged pursuit of a satisfactory conclusion to issues that may cause distress or hardship for older (or in fact any) residents of the Town.
However, in receiving his nomination, the Town Council is also reliably informed that Mr. Allcroft’s work goes far beyond “sorting out other people’s problems”. The Council, in receiving this nomination, is advised that Mr. Allcroft also finds time to ensure that older and less able residents are able to access and participate in social activities; which can prove to be a lifeline to the more vulnerable members of the community.
The Town Council is, therefore, delighted to be given this opportunity to recognise the work that Mr. Allcroft does for the benefit of others and the Town, and it was unanimously agreed that he is a most worthy recipient of the Joseph J. Magrath O.B.E. Award for Public Voluntary Service 2011.

CIVIC AWARD 2011
The Brigg Town Council Civic Award is presented in recognition of a feature in Brigg which is best considered to have improved the appearance of the Town during the previous year.
At the Brigg Town Council Meeting on Monday 23rd January 2012, the Policy Committee recommendation that the Brigg Town Council Civic Award for 2011 should recognise significant improvement to a previously dilapidated, untidy and neglected location, adjacent to a residential area of the Town, was approved.
It was, therefore, resolved that the Award will be presented to North Lincolnshire Council in recognition of  Brigg Children’s Centre, at the junction of Grammar School Road and Colton Street, Brigg.

HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL CEREMONY IN BRIGG



Holocaust Memorial Day is on Friday and the Theme for 2012 is Speak Up, Speak Out.
The Annual Holocaust Memorial Ceremony in Brigg will be held on Sunday (29th January) at 4.15pm in the Angel, off the Market Place.
This is a simple ceremony that provides the opportunity both for reflection on the atrocities of the past, and to consider and unite against the prejudice and discrimination that still goes on today.  Everyone is welcome, no invitation necessary. Please assemble in the glazed courtyard from 4pm.
The Holocaust Memorial Exhibition is now on display in the Angel Courtyard. A Book of Remembrance will be open on Holocaust Memorial Day for members of the public to record their own thoughts.

BRIGG AWARDS CELEBRATION FOR OUTSTANDING KUMON STUDENTS

Established for over 50 years, Kumon’s unique maths and English study programmes help children to excel academically, develop their capacity for learning independently and boost their all-round confidence.
On Friday 13 January, at an Advanced Student Roll (ASR) awards ceremony, 36 children from the Brigg Kumon Study Centre were honoured for their success and continued development studying on the Kumon maths and English programmes. The committed students were presented with awards at a ceremony which took place at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Hall on Barnard Avenue. The motivating ceremony was held to celebrate children mastering maths and English beyond their current school level and to inspire them to realise their unlimited potential. The awards were presented by Councillor Penny Smith and Councillor Alec Depledge of Brigg Town Council.
The audience were also treated to a performance by the John Turners Black Belt Academy. The performance included an impressive display of self-defence, weapons skills, board breaking and much more. The performers were aged between four and sixteen and included a number of Kumon students who enjoy both after-school activities.
The John Turners Black Belt Academy is located in Brigg, and has an Instruction Team with over 100 years' combined experience, and a Chief Instructor, Master J.A.Turner 6th Dan Black Belt, who is into his 4th decade of teaching experience.
The academy was keen to be involved in the event as they recognised a number of parallels between the martial arts discipline and the skills developed as a Kumon student. Both the martial arts students and the Kumon students work hard to master key skills and progress to a higher level. They also know they need to develop self-motivation, focus, confidence and value regular practice to experience improvement, all of which will prepare them for a lifetime of success.
Adam and Olivia El-Rakshy have been attending the Brigg Study Centre for six months. Following the event, their mum Tricia said: “We have enjoyed the ceremony evening. It was inspiring to Adam and Olivia to listen and watch the high achievers and how they work. It was also inspiring for the parents to see how with hard work and perseverance our children can achieve a lot.”
“Having JTBBA as part of the ceremony was a reminder of the ultimate control of body and mind. The JTBBA is the control of the body and the ultimate physical discipline and Kumon the ultimate mind discipline. This was a good mix of two powerful cultures based on hard work to achieve the maximum harmony between the body and mind. The award night gave the children a quest and a role model to follow.”

BRIGG COUNCIL MEETING REMINDER


Members of the public can attend two Brigg Town Council meetings tonight in the Angel Suite, off Exchange Place. At 6.45pm there's a meeting of the Planning and Environment Committee. From 7.30pm Brigg Town Council will hold its monthly meeting, beginning with Public Question Time, if anyone has issues to raise.

'BIG 200' APPROACHES FOR BRIGG BUTTERCROSS




Brigg ought, perhaps, to be thinking of a suitable way to celebrate the 200th anniversary of town landmark The Buttercross.
The building dates from 1817 – giving community leaders, and the public, five years to plan something suitable before the milestone is reached.
The Buttercross was a creation of the Elwes family – major property and landowners in the Brigg area.
Its initial function was a meeting room upstairs, while the lower floor was open and intended to be a place to trade butter, eggs and poultry. The first floor also housed a Catholic school.
The Buttercross eventually became the Town Hall (in the days of Brigg Urban District Council) and then passed into the ownership of Glanford Borough Council (1974-1996).
To its credit, Glanford formulated an extensive regeneration project for buildings in the Brigg Conservation Area, with The Buttercross its flagship.
Famously, it was declared well and truly open by Diana, Princess of Wales, on her historic visit to Brigg in 1988.
The award-winning Brigg Tourist Information Centre is now overseen by North Lincolnshire Council, which came into being 16 years ago.

BRIGG HOMES FIT FOR A QUEEN ?



Wasn't Elizabeth Court in Brigg - on the Springbank Estate - named after Her Majesty The Queen when built by Brigg Urban District Council in the 1950s or early 1960s?
If so, shouldn't this be some sort of focal point for Diamond Jubilee celebrations in early June?
Ownership of the Court passed from the UDC to Glanford Borough Council in 1974, then on to North Lincolnshire Council. Latterly, "council housing" has been managed by North Lincolnshire Homes.
Elizabeth Court properties have been refurbished quite recently.
Leaving that aside, how Brigg will celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in June will become must clearer after a public meeting on Wednesday (January 25) at the Angel Suite (7.30pm).
There’s an open invitation for anyone, or any group/organisation, to attend if interested.
Councillor Ben Nobbs chaired the initial meeting earlier this month, which was very well-supported. Indeed, surprisingly well-supported, given that apathy often reigns in respect of public forums.
Those present drew up a long list of possible events to be held in the town centre and at the Recreation Ground, off Wrawby Road.
Various inquiries will have been made over the past couple of weeks - by individuals and groups - and we expect much “reporting back” during Wednesday night’s get-together.
If you are planning to go along, it will be necessary to use the rear “Rotunda” entrance to the Angel Suite, close to the council car park.

ANY CONCRETE PROPOSALS FOR BRIGG PUB?





A future of a well-known Brigg pub is now the subject of speculation after these concrete blocks were put in place.
The Ancholme Inn – on Grammar School Road – has changed tenants down the years almost as often as some Brigg folk enjoy hot dinners. But this time things are different. Rather than just standing empty until the brewery finds another “taker” the extended concrete barrier has gone up.
It would seem the aim is to stop unwanted vehicles from taking residence on the site.
But this course of action was not followed during previous gaps in tenancy.
Having seen the concrete barrier put in place, some local people are making suggestions about what this might mean for the future of the site, with its extensive car park.
It is, after all, a pretty sizeable site. Ripe for re-development, perhaps?
The Ancholme was built in the early 1960s, primarily to serve the nearby council estates (Springbank and Hawthorn Avenue).
Most of us who have lived in Brigg a long time will have happy memories of attending fine functions down the years at The Ancholme, while some Blog followers will have been regulars at the hostelry - even up to last month.

BRIGG BUSINESS MEETING AT LOFT



The next Brigg Town Business Partnership meeting will be on Tuesday, January 24 at 5.30pm at The Loft (rear entrance off Old Courts Road).

The 2012 showpiece event will take place on Wednesday, June 20 and Thursday, June 21.
Brigg coach firm TJs, on Bridge Street/Island Carr Road, will be running a trip again this year. Pop in and see the helpful staff to book your seat.
The head of one of the UK’s leading horticultural companies has been named as the new President of the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society, which runs the major county event - just north of Lincoln, off the A15.
Lord Taylor of Holbeach, CBE, who is now serving as a  Minister in the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, follows in the footsteps of other distinguished Presidents, who have included HRH Princess Anne, the Earl of Yarborough and most recently Professor David Chiddick, former Vice Chancellor of the University of Lincoln.
In the presidential role, Lord Taylor will represent the Society at the annual Lincolnshire Show in June, when over 60,000 people come to learn about the importance of agriculture in the life of the county.
Lord Taylor’s involvement in horticulture and farming dates back to his teens, when he joined the family business and started work on the family farm in Holbeach. The peer, who stood down as chairman of the company, Taylors Bulbs, following his appointment said:  “It’s a great honour to be invited to act as President.  I applaud the Society for the way in which they have kept the agricultural focus of the Lincolnshire Show; in so doing they have ensured that it remains the high point of the farming year in the county.
“The Society plays an important part in the economic life of Lincolnshire as well as performing a great task as advocate for the agricultural and horticultural industry, in what is the country’s premier agricultural county.”
Lincolnshire Agricultural Society operates the Lincolnshire Events Centre, which brings together agricultural, educational and conferencing activities.  Research has shown that a massive £44m is being injected into the national economy thanks to the Lincolnshire Events Centre, which attracts over 215,000 visitors a year.
Lord Taylor added: “The biggest challenge facing farming is to make best use of modern technology and remain competitive in the global marketplace.  Keeping up to date is vital."
Lord Taylor entered the House of Lords in 2006, having been made a life peer as Baron Taylor of Holbeach, of South Holland in the County of Lincolnshire. He was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in September 2011.
He was previously Government spokesperson for the Cabinet Office, Energy and Climate Change, and Work and Pensions. He also served as opposition spokesman from 2006-2010 and as a Whip in the House of Lords. He was created a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1992 for political service, and served as Chairman of the National Conservative Convention and Deputy Chairman of the Party from 2000 to 2003.
Taylors Bulbs is one of the largest bulb producers in the UK, farming 317 acres of daffodils and 1860 acres of other crops including vegetables, cereals, potatoes and sugar beet.
Also leading the Society during 2012 is John Lockwood, who continues in his role as Chairman for a third year. Master of the Burton Hunt and a former High Sheriff of Lincolnshire, he runs the family property company, Castle Square Developments, alongside the family farm.
The £7m EPIC Centre at the Lincolnshire Showground was opened three years ago, providing a conference and events facility, capable of hosting conferences, balls and seminars, and is designed also as an educational resource and state-of-the-art events centre for up to 1,900 people.

The Brigg Town Council 3B’s Youth project is seeking to employ a committed member of staff to join its existing team in order to engage with young people, and to provide a programme of activities within the environs of Brigg.
Activities are delivered in the early evening, at weekends, and during the school holidays, and you will use your knowledge and experience to develop activities that will reach out to young people, and increase their participation and involvement in the 3B’s project.
You will have experience of working with young people and must hold a current driving licence.  A relevant youth, coaching, and/or outreach qualification would be desirable.
This post is a fixed term contract until 31st March 2014, although there may be the opportunity to extend the position beyond this period.

BRIGG REDEVELOPMENT PLANS ON AGENDA


Brigg Town councillors will soon get the opportunity to make comment on an interesting scheme to redevelop a town centre site.
Brigg Town Council's Planning and Environment Committee - meeting on Monday, 23rd, in the Angel Suite from 6.45pm - will consider planning applications relating to demolition of buildings in the Conservation Area, to the rear of 5-6 Market Place, and the erection of eight town houses, two maisonettes, four flats and three shops.
This meeting is open to interested members of the public, as is the monthly meeting of Brigg Town Council which follows at 7.30pm, also in the Angel Suite.
The Council meeting will receive a report from Coun Ben Nobbs about suggested celebrations in Brigg to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, in early June.
Brigg Town Council does not have the power to grant planning permission, but it has a right to comment on applications and pass on any comments to North Lincolnshire planners, who have the final say.

WILL BRIGG SEE MORE DIAL-A-RIDE BUSES?



During Brigg Town Council discussions several months ago about public transport provision in North Lincolnshire, there was reference made to the award-winning CallCollect bus service operated from within the boundaries of nearby Lincolnshire.
Sometimes you see CallCollect vehicles dropping off passengers in Cary Lane, Brigg.
It’s a sort of dial-a-ride facility, with passengers booking transport up to a week in advance to pick them up at pre-arranged times.
In North Lincolnshire Council's area, Brigg Blog wouldn’t be at all surprised if we eventually see something similar taken onboard, so to speak, with subsequent reduction in some of the subsidies for traditional, strictly timetabled bus services.
Lincolnshire County Council tells us CallConnect has just  seen one of its most successful years.
Services grew by 23.5%  - from around 201,200 journeys to more than 250,000.
In the Market Rasen and Caistor Area, from which we reckon the CallConnect vehicles visiting Brigg originate,  usage rose from 19,000 to over 21,000 (an 11.1% increase)
Lincolnshire County Council's Executive Member for Highways and Transportation, Councillor William Webb, said: “The CallConnect service plays a crucial role in keeping people connected to public transport throughout the county’s towns and villages, especially in the light of a reduction in our annual transportation budget which helps to subsidise bus services. It’s so easy to use - people can just pick up the phone to book a ride whenever they need one.
“We’ve extended the opening times and made smarter use of technology. There have been improvements to the CallConnect online booking service and people can book by text message, too. During busy periods, we also operate a callback service so that people don’t have to wait to get through on the phone.”
CallConnect Manager Paul Sanders said: “As we enter our second decade of service we are looking forward to working even harder to ensure that patronage is high, that people are getting the service they want and that customers can access the service as easily as possible. That’s our New Year’s Resolution.”
Much-appreciated, subsidised buses in Brigg at the moment include those that visit some of our housing estates on Thursdays and Saturdays (see picture) - a great help to the elderly and those with mobility problems. The Wolds Villager also offers a very useful link with Wrawby and Barnetby.

HOT TIP TO PREVENT BRIGG THEFTS ON COLD DAYS


Brigg motorists - and those throughout northern Lincolnshire - are being warned not to leave vehicles unattended while de-icing them.
This follows an incident in Epworth early this morning when thieves made off with a red Seat Leon, whose owner had left the engine running while de-icing it outside his home.
Police says that with the cold weather likely to last for a few more days at least, it is important  motorists do not present thieves with easy targets.
A spokesman for the Humberside force said: "Thankfully incidents such as this are rare but that doesn't mean drivers should take for granted that it won't happen to them.
"You never know who is watching when your are de-frosting your vehicle so, where possible, please try and allow extra time to clear the ice from your car or van so that you can stay with it and not be rushing in and out of your home doing other things.
"It may take a few minutes to do but this could save you a lot of time and money by preventing your vehicle from being stolen by an opportunistic thief."

WILL BRIGG BUDGET INCLUDE CCTV?



Could Brigg Town Council consider using some of its ‘crime and disorder’ budget to improve CCTV surveillance of the town centre?
That question was posed some time ago at a meeting of the policy committee by one of the councillors.
As the Town Council is now looking to formulate its budget for the 2012/3 financial year, starting in April, it will be interesting to see whether CCTV is included.
The camera system – not operated, we stress, by the Town Council – has been criticised for what is seen by some as its failure to record crimes being carried out in Brigg.

BREAKTHROUGH SWAN IN BRIGG

Frozen rivers obviously pose major problems for swans. Today I witnessed this couple trying to make their way upstream on the icy River Ancholme, near Brigg, my home town. Initially I thought they were side-by-side, but as I moved closer it became apparent that one was ahead, and was working extremely hard to break the ice, while the other was gliding, almost effortlessly in its 'slipstream'. It was a moving scene, and provided food for reflection:
In many walks of life - politics, religion, medicine, technology, the arts or sport - there are those we could term 'breakthrough' people, who like this swan, pioneer the way for others to follow in their wake.They're rugged individuals, who brave the prevailing conditions, to push through into bigger and better things. Let us remember, with gratitude, those who made a way for us, and who paid a price so that we could be the persons we are today, and enjoy the life we have today
It also brought to mind specifically, how the Son of God, Jesus - the Pioneer of the Christian faith - laid down his life, tasted death for mankind, in order to bring many people to salvation, made a way, where there was no way, back into the Father's Presence.

ARE BRIGG WHEELERS ON TRACK FOR GRANT?



Brigg Town Council has deferred a request for a grant from Brigg Wheelers - based at the Skatepark, Scawby Brook.
A request is to be made for further information from the organisation before the town council’s policy committee decides whether or not to release any cash.
Coun Mike Campion suggested seeking clarification about what the Wheelers need to spend money on.
At the same meeting, councillors had to decline, with regret, after being asked to help the Brigg and District Senior Citizen's Pop-In Centre, on Cary Lane.
The council cannot make grants for projects that have already been carried out, and it was suggested that new carpets had already been laid at the centre.
A request for financial assistance from Northern Lincolnshire CPRE was declined.
The policy committee approves small grants to organisations and groups of up to £250.
Applications to the town council for assistance must include details of why the money is needed and be accompanied by a statement of accounts.
The town council has helped many clubs and societies in this way, over many years.

BRIGG WEDDING FAYRE AT THE ANGEL

The Angel Suite in Brigg will be holding its Annual Wedding Fayre on Sunday 4th March,  10am to 5.30pm.
The fayre will feature many local vendors who can assist you in the planning of your perfect wedding day.
Many vendors will be offering samples and or discounts for this day only.
The event will also give visitors the opportunity to see The Angel Suite’s facilities for hire as a venue for your Wedding Celebrations.
Admission is FREE. Complimentary Drinks and Snacks will be available throughout the day.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION IN BRIGG



The Brigg Parish Nursing Scheme is one year old. To mark this 'anniversary' there will be a joint service in Brigg Methodist Church on Sunday 15th January at 6pm.
Brigg's Parish Nurse, Mrs Sue Depledge (RN), pictured above, will be presented with her pin and certificate by Parish Nursing, UK in recognition of completing her portfolio, and achieving full status with the organisation.
All are welcome to join in this time of celebration - especially those who may have benefitted from Sue's ministry in the last 12 months.

CELEBRATIONS FOR QUEEN'S DIAMOND JUBILEE IN JUNE

SPECIAL REPORT SUBMITTED BY COUN BEN NOBBS

At the last Brigg Town Council Meeting, I was tasked with finding out if there was enough help and support – within the community – to organise an event or events to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
I wrote to every organisation the Town Council was aware of, inviting a person or persons from each to attend a meeting in the Angel on Monday evening, January 9th and the attendance at that meeting was excellent.
The meeting decided that we would hold an event and we went on to decide that it would take place on Monday June 4th.
Lots of ideas were then forthcoming and the meeting decided to hold a series of events throughout the day – some of them in the Market Place and some on the Recreation Ground “with Satellite events branching off” – with possibly a dance in the evening to round off the day.
It was agreed that each representative would discuss these ideas with their own organisation over the next two weeks and we would meet again on Wednesday, January 25th – again at the Angel at 7-30 p.m. – to firm up the timetable and to get down to detailed planning.
There was also the suggestion that an ecumenical service be held on Sunday Evening, June 3rd and this needs to be put to the various churches for consideration.
Time is all important because a full detailed timetable, Health & Safety Risk Assessment etc must be in to the North Lincolnshire Council Events Committee by the beginning of March.
The group are aware that considerable funding will be required for basic amenities – staging, PA systems, marquees, toilets etc. and for prizes for competitions, races, etc. and we will be asking for grant aid from Brigg Town Council and North Lincs Council.
Any groups that wish to hold street parties would be encouraged to do so on Tuesday June 5th – the actual “Jubilee Bank Holiday”. The issue of “Road closures” will have to be faced.
We also need to look at the question of a “Beacon” for Brigg – the one on station road, if lighted, would set fire to the tree next to it now.
A number of Brigg Organisations sent in reply slips to my first letter, saying they were unable to attend that first meeting. They are more than welcome to send representative(s) to this next meeting and to bring fresh ideas along to it.

MONDAY 9TH JANUARY 2012 DIAMOND JUBILEE MEETING, ANGEL BALLROOM, BRIGG

Timing is very important, all details need to be in to the North Lincs Events Committee by March.  Final details need to be drafted out in the next 7-8 weeks.

Suggested Possible Options
Possibly changing the date on a one off basis of the farmers market so it could run alongside any planned celebrations.
The concern with using Market place being that it could clash and draw attention away from the planned Summer Fair event organised by Brigg Lions for the following weekend.
Have part of the celebrations located on the Recreational Ground
Flower festival/cream teas, no funding needed as the flower group will organise this.
Individual street parties with entertainers who could visit each party, jugglers etc
Street parties can cause Traffic problems, road closures.
If we use the recreational ground, everyone is in one place.
Large Garden Party/Entertainment/stalls/competitions
Bell Ringing
Chris Dyson read out programme from the Silver jubilee with such events throughout  the day as Decorated bicycle parade/ egg and spoon races/ Competitions/prizes/Jubilee Dance
It was mentioned that if the Recreational ground is used the changing rooms can be opened to allow for public conveniences.
Vote for day of Celebrations :  by majority vote, date was set at the Bank Holiday Monday 4th June 2012

Decision was made that a timetable of events and locations would have to be compiled
Cost Implications
This would depend on other events organised within the town.  Bids would be put in to both Brigg Town Council and North Lincs Council
Also question was asked re funding for erecting stage in the town, this would be put to Full Town council for consideration.
Service of Thanksgiving
Suggestion put forward asking if the churches would be willing to organise an evening service of Thanksgiving prior to the celebrations
This could also be an occasion for Bell Ringing
The church would already be decorated in preperation for the flower festival
Groups
 It was agreed that all the representatives from each group would meet with their members regarding involvement/activities/volunteers for the event and report back at the next meeting

TUNE IN TO BRIGG GRAMMAR SCHOOL SONG'S 'LOST VERSES'



Former pupils of Brigg Grammar School will be interested in “lost” verses of the school song – Fortitudine - that have re-appeared after many years.
My memories of learning, and singing, the school song go back to 1967-74, when it had to be performed during Speech Day at Brigg Corn Exchange (sadly, long since demolished).
It has also been sung for many years at March’s annual dinner of the Briggensians’ Association, latterly held at Elsham Golf Club.
I can only recall learning two verses – the first beginning “Twas in the days of Charles...” and the second starting “Unselfish in his riches...”
And we’ve only sung these verses at all the dinners I’ve attended down the years.
However, at the recent thanksgiving service for the life of former chairman of Sir John Nelthorpe School governors, Roy O’Neill, four “extra” verses were printed on the Order of Service and sung by the congregation, which included many “old boys”.
We were led by the Sir John Nelthorpe School Choir – SJN, the comprehensive, being established in 1976 upon the demise of BGS after well over 300 years.

For the benefit of those who are not Briggensians (ex-pupils or staff), Brigg Grammar School was founded by a generous bequest in the will of Sir John Nelthorpe in 1669. He wanted to ensure that boys received worthwhile schooling and so left land in Lincolnshire from which the rent could be used to support the seat of learning. The Nelthorpe family has centuries-old links with Scawby and its Hall.
