MILESTONE AHEAD FOR BRIGG BUILDING

Have they decided to give the former Brigg Congregational Chapel a spruce up in readiness for the prominent Wrawby Street building's 200th anniversary in a couple of years' time?

PLANNING BRIGG'S FUTURE

A meeting of the Brigg Community-Led Plan Committee will be held in the Angel Suite, off Market Place, on Wednesday, September 7, at 6.30pm.

BRIGG'S BLACK BULL RAISES £222

Richard Smith, mine host at the Black Black Bull, in Wrawby Street, Brigg, says the hostelry's Race Night raised £222 for the Wish House Children's Charity. He extends his thanks to all who attended and supported the event.

SWEET SUCCESS

Many in Brigg – and not just children! – are looking forward to the opening of Sankey’s Sweet Shop in Wrawby Street (in what was once Jack Waters' butcher's shop).
We now learn there will be more than 150 types of “goodies” on sale from old-fashioned glass jars, plus traditionally brewed cordials like dandelion and burdock and cream soda.
Personalised sweet gift jars will be available, along with gift baskets and children’s party sweets.
Monday, September 19 will see the Evening Opening Launch, 5.30pm to 7.30pm – all welcome.
The shop will then open for business the following morning (20th).

KUMON DOWN FOR FREE TRIAL IN BRIGG

Kumon, one of the leading after-school education providers in the UK, is today encouraging students and parents across the region to start the new term with a focus on education.
Craig Cook, the Brigg Kumon Instructor, is gearing up for a busy two months as the Kumon Free Trial period is generating an unprecedented response from parents in Brigg and the surrounding area.
He says: “We’ve already had a number of parents contact us to arrange an enrolment. People have been attracted by the idea of trying Kumon for two weeks before deciding whether to continue. It gives them an opportunity to have a taste and evaluate the Kumon English and maths programmes for themselves. After the two weeks if they choose to continue is up to them.”
The Free Trial runs from 1 September until 31 October 2011 and is totally free of charge and open to all children in the local area. Kumon offers individualised maths and English study programmes that are tailored to the needs of each child. Through daily practice and repetition, students build their confidence, improve their concentration and gain effective study skills that will enhance their future learning. Through Kumon, your child can develop an attitude to learning that enables them to overcome obstacles and succeed in life.
Alyson Smith mother of Kumon students, Leanne and Olivia says: “Kumon has become an integral part of our lives and one which I know has had a huge effect on the girls. We have seen them grow and develop in so many ways with Kumon. Their confidence has grown and they aren’t afraid to work hard. Kumon has taught them to try and try again and never give up. This is a key skill for life as far as I’m concerned and one that will mean they can go on to lead successful and happy lives.”
The Free Trial provides children with the opportunity to experience Kumon first-hand and also gives parents an insight into how the Kumon method can benefit their child, without any financial commitment. The offer applies to either or both subjects of English and maths, and is open to families who are new to Kumon, siblings of current students and those already on the programme considering a second subject.
The Kumon method of learning was developed in 1954 by Toru Kumon, both a parent and gifted teacher from Japan. Like any parent, Toru wanted the best education for his son and began devising a teaching method using worksheets in the core subject of maths. Soon word spread of the success of his method and now in 2011, there are approximately 58,000 students studying Kumon at more than 600 study centres across the UK and Ireland.
To enrol on the Free Trial or to speak to your local Kumon Instructor, please contact: Craig Cook at Brigg Study Centre on 01652 653345 or email: brigg@kumoncentre.co.uk

POLICE PRESENCE COUNTS

It made me smile the other Sunday morning when observing a car driver coming through the Market Place pedestrian area from the direction of the County Bridge. He got as far as Scalini's chippie and then saw a policeman standing further down Wrawby Street, "protecting a crime scene" to use the jargon.
Needless to say, on went the brakes!
It's amazing what difference a visible police presence can make in helping to deter vehicles which have no just cause to be in the pedestrian area.
The Brigg and Wolds section of the official police website says: "Vehicles driving into the pedestrian area via Bridge Street and contravening the ‘No Entry’ sign continue to be a priority for the Brigg and Wolds Team.
"Patrols are still using the civic CCTV facilities and viewing recorded footage to assist with identifying offending vehicles for follow up enquires to be conducted where possible.
"It is also becoming increasingly evident that during the school summer holidays youths riding pedal cycles within the pedestrian zone is on the increase. The Neighbourhood Team are patrolling as and when duties allow and are dealing with people responsible accordingly.
"The North Lincolnshire civil parking wardens continue to monitor the parking of vehicles within the pedestrian area and the surrounding streets.
"Enquiries by Brigg Neighbourhood Team with members of North Lincolnshire Council are still ongoing with a view to looking at a long term solution to this priority."

VIOLINIST TAKES A BOW

Yesterday's busker in Wrawby Street, Brigg, was four hours early.
It was 1412 and not 1812 when we observed him giving a solo violin rendition of Tchaikovsky's famous Overture.
We were going to take a picture and make a small monetary contribution, but by the time we came back along the main thoroughfare he had gone.
Nearby St John's Church bells would have added much to the music and been in keeping with the original score of the Russian classical masterpiece.
Next time perhaps the busker might consider Delius' Brigg Fair.

CONCERNS ABOUT NEW HOMES PROPOSAL

Brigg Town Council is objecting to plans to build up to 40 new homes on scrub land off Grammar School Road (close to the bridge over the M180).
Members of the Town Council’s Planning and Environment Committee made a site visit before debating the outline application.
Once back at the Angel Suite, concerns were expressed about flood risk in the area, increased traffic being generated along Grammar School Road and the ability of the sewerage system to cope with additional properties.
During the debate, reference was made to extensive flooding of the council’s allotments a few summers ago – the plots being next to the site being proposed for housing development.
Brigg Town Council is to express its views to the planners at North Lincolnshire Council, who will make the final decision on whether to grant permission.
Our picture shows the official planning application notice pinned to a lamp-post near the site.

RECAPTURING FLAVOUR OF THE GOODIE BINNS ERA

A specialist sweet shop earmarked for Brigg town centre deserves to do very well.
We were pleased to chat to Natalie Sankey while she was busy painting the outside of the former Waters’ butcher’s shop in Wrawby Street on Saturday morning.
The old shop is being transformed into what she describes as an old-fashioned sweet shop and is due to open on September 19/20.
Have you been around long enough to recall when jars and jars of humbugs, sherbert lemons and wine gums lined the shelves?
Older Brigg folk will be aware that almost immediately across the street from Natalie’s new shop stood “Goodie” Binns’ locally famous sweetie emporium – a favoured stopping off point for children over many, many years.
Goodie’s old shop now forms part of Brigg Fruit and Veg.
Miss White had a similar sweetie shop down Bridge Street.
Are you old enough to remember them?

Natalie doing a spot of painting, answering questions from passers-by and talking to us. The last pictures show what was once Goodie Binns' shop (across the street from Natalie's) and an old butcher's advertising panel unearthed on her shop front while it was being revamped.

Golf clubs seem to be prime items on sale in Brigg charity shops today, with sets of clubs on display outside the Lindsey Lodge Hospice and Sue Ryder shops (Market Place and Spring's Parade respectively).

BRIGG CEMETERY REPLACEMENT SEATING

From David Evans
Cardiff (ex Kings Avenue, Brigg, 1961-68)

Thanks for featuring the above subject. As someone who visits the cemetery, I would strongly support the provision of replacement seating. This would be particularly helpful for people who travel to Brigg from afar to visit the graves of loved ones (such as myself).

NF adds: Brigg Town Council has raised this issue and it is hoped the North Lincolnshire authority, which manages the cemetery, will take the decision to install new seats to replace the current dilapidated selection.

BOTTOM FALLEN OUT OF THE MARKET?

On Bigby High Road yesterday someone had propped up a brown sign announcing horse manure for sale at 50p. With all the free stuff deposited on Brigg roads and streets before, during and after the Horse Fair, you have to wonder whether the Bigby High Road outlet has seen a slump in sales. If only a temporary one.

ALLOT TO PHOTOGRAPH ON OUR BRIGG PATCH

Brigg's allotments - off Redcombe Lane/Atherton Way and Grammar School Road - are run by Brigg Town Council. The trend towards 'grow your own' means they are very popular and much in demand, the rents being very reasonable, we understand.
Brigg Blog happened to be down the far end of Grammar School Road yesterday afternoon and took a few pictures of things looking nice and green - before a heavy shower came down.
Just what the gardeners wanted, though most Brigg folk would have prepared bright August sunshine beating down on them!
If you want to know more about getting an allotment in Brigg (though we think there's a waiting list you'll have to join) contact Brigg Town Council. Email enquiries@briggmarkettown.co.uk or call in at the office in the Angel Suite, Monday and Thursday mornings, 9am-noon.

MEMORABLE BRIGG HORSE FAIR 2011

A spot of last-minute grooming being undertaken at Brigg Horse Fair 2011.

You will find dozens of pictures from Brigg Horse Fair 2011 - held on the traditional date, August 5 - posted on the Brigg People website (see link below).
There's also an article in which "yours truly" argues North Lincolnshire Council should be taking steps to improve the marketing of the historic event in 2012.
Many keen gardeners in Brigg will be smiling today after free loads of manure came their way. Some of the stuff still remains uncollected on Brigg streets this morning, though. So nip out with your bucket and spade. But don't hang about - it's in demand.
