BRIGG VETERANS' GATEWAY IS HERE TO HELP

BY CHARLES BRINDLEY

I am one of the members of the Brigg Royal British Legion and would like to inform you about the new Royal British Legion Veterans Gateway.
We are the local North Lincolnshire ‘Touch Point’ where local people can access information, help and support for veterans and their families and there as a follow up if they need  support.
The point of the Veterans Gateway is a ONE POINT of contact for all requests for help and/or support for all those who have served no matter when or for how long.
One of the problems that younger veterans have is they do not class themselves as veterans so find it difficult to engage; the older veterans, like many older persons, let pride get in their way, but, hey! we all served and are a part of a team.
Over many years when we had Royal British Legion clubs across the country and we had a community, the support was normally locally sourced and locally provided; alas, over time for many reasons, these clubs and pubs have closed where veterans could find comradeship and support.
We are very well aware that warfare has changed and the damage it can do to men who served at the front and notwithstanding that still the service person is not properly prepared for life after combat, and while many do adjust more and more are struggling.
The MoD have tasked the RBL to provide this single point of contact for all requests of help and support, this to speed up and streamline the provision of services.
So far North Lincolnshire Council have been very supportive, giving us space in the library in Brigg on Thursday (Market Day) to increase the potential footfall.
We have discussed about going out into other towns and villages across the whole of North Lincolnshire, as we are aware that some may not be able to travel in to Brigg.
We have also running along side of this  two NAAFI breaks - one at Ashby Bowl and one in the Britannia Inn in Brigg (nothing to do with Breakfast Clubs).
Both are popular and we have helped veterans, widows and ex-service families. The Ashby Bowl NAAFI break is every second Saturday and the Britannia one is at present the last Sunday of the month.
So we have a serious side of support and help and a social one that those who have attended enjoy, all are welcome (Wives/Girlfriends), all you have to do is pay for your own breakfast.

WELCOME BOOST FOR BRIGG TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB FROM WORLD FAMOUS RESTAURANT CHAIN & WE'RE LOVING IT!

Congratulations are due to Brigg Town Football Club - one of the oldest in THE WORLD, having been running since the 1860s, and having twice won the national FA Vase knockout competition.
A friend connected with the Zebras today has been in touch to say: "Evening, Nigel, a bit of good news from  Brigg Town Football Club for the  blog.
"For the fourth year running we at the club have retained our charter standard status, in line and in keeping with the Football Association's protocol, ensuring that all our junior teams, up to under 18, have qualified coaches, welfare officer and up to date safeguarding qualifications in place.
"Big thanks are in order to David Raines and our new chairman Andrew Kikby.
"This entitles one of our junior teams to a full set of Nike kit, provided and paid for by McDonald's."
Quite a cash-saving there!
That update comes from Martin North,  charter standard co-ordinator - pictured above.
A long-standing town  resident who attended Brigg Grammar School, Martin was a notable player with Brigg Amateurs, and others, and later became a respected referee.
He is a former landlord of the Ancholme and Yarborough Hunt, ex-steward of Brigg Servicemen's Club, and once ran Jollies at Wrawby - all with the support of wife Linda, we hasten to add.
A former steelworker, he later switched careers and went into education.
He has been working hard behind the scenes at The Hawthorns for many years.
Martin would be the first to point out that others do likewise but Brigg Blog thinks he merits a  mention in despatches.

NEW DATE FOR BRIGG SCHOOL REUNION

A new date has been set for a school reunion in Brigg involving former pupils.
Due to this week's prolonged and often heavy rain, the cricket match on the field at Sir John Nelthorpe School will not take place tonight, Friday, as planned.
It will now be played on Friday, July 7 - players being asked to meet at 5.30pm for a 6pm start.
A Briggensians' X1 will be playing a Sir John Nelthorpe School XI.
Following the game there will be a social reunion for former pupils at Wetherspoon's White Horse pub in Brigg town centre.
All former pupils of SJN, Brigg Grammar and the High School are very welcome to attend.

TIME OF THE BRIGG REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY WREATH-LAYING CEREMONY DISCUSSED & DECIDED FOR 2017

For many, many years the Remembrance Sunday wreath-laying ceremony in Brigg has taken place an hour later than those in the vast majority of cities, towns and villages across the UK.
The reason for the noon ceremony  in Brigg is thought to relate to the police being able to have sufficient officers on the ground to close the A18 to traffic near the Monument.
However, as November 2016 saw no police deployed to do this and community volunteers carrying out the task, Brigg Town Council, which co-ordinates the ceremony, discussed what should happen this November.
Coun Mike Campion told the June meeting that although the later start time in Brigg might seem strange, it was very popular and had worked well.
He thought the British Legion and others should be asked for their views.
Coun James Truepenny agreed that consultation was required.
Coun Rob Waltham said he could remember being taken to watch the ceremony as a boy and today he took pride in the high attendance of people at the Monument.
Brigg's current arrangements were really successful and he suggested that no change was needed at this time.
He felt there was insufficient time to consult widely for 2016.
He successfully suggested the Town Council should revisit the issue in the New Year.
So there will be no change to the usual arrangements this November.
Having Brigg's wreath-laying an hour later means that townsfolk can watch TV coverage of some or all of the ceremony in London attended by the Queen and still get down to our Monument.
Whether Humberside Police will deploy officers to carry out the road closure this November has yet to be notified to Brigg Town Council.

BRIGG TAKE ON SHAKEPEARE'S BALCONY SCENE

There will be no stage in Brigg Market Place for the 2017 Christmas lights switch on ceremony this December.
Instead, the civic party and guests will be up on the balcony of the historic Angel building, with the crowd beneath.
This change to  long-standing practice will save money on erecting and taking down the temporary stage.
The Town  Council agreed to try the festive change during its June meeting held on Monday evening.
Former Town Mayor Coun Ann Eardley was the only councillor to voice a little concern but it was pointed out that removing the large stage would free up a good deal of extra space in the Market Place for spectators.
Professional panto performers attend the switch on to entertain the crowd.
Could it be that one of them this year might be called Juliet and that among the 1,000-plus spectators below there could be a Romeo?
Brigg once had a well-known resident and charity fundraiser called William Shakespeare.
And our market and fair had been operating for some centuries before the playwright from Stratford penned his now world famous plays.
The switch from stage to balcony is an interesting one.
We must await public opinion in December.
It will be a case of As You Like It.

PRIORITY BRIGG STREETS TO GET NEW LIGHTS

Coun Rob Waltham has revealed the streets in Brigg that will be the next to get new LED lights under a programme of highway works by North Lincolnshire Council, of which he is the leader.
During his monthly report on unitary authority matters affecting Brigg, he told Brigg Town Council's June meeting that roads like Barnard Avenue and Bridge Street would be among the first to benefit.
They are both on the busy A18.
LED lights use much less electricity than the traditional type.
So the public purse will benefit.
A few years ago, some Brigg streets were used to test out the LED lighting.
They were well received.

OBJECTION VOICED TO ADVERT SIGNS ON BRIGG MONUMENT ROUNDABOUT

Brigg Town Council is objecting to a Yorkshire company's  advertisement consent application for permission to display signs on the perimeters of the A18 Monument roundabout in Brigg.
North Lincolnshire Council planners will now decide whether to give approval or refuse the application.
Concerns were expressed during a Brigg Town Council  Planning & Environment Committee meeting held on Monday night in the Angel Suite.
Chairman Coun Mike Storey said the Monument was a war memorial with listed building status. What was suggested would be inappropriate.
A blanket application has been made seeking advert consent for signs on various roundabouts in North Lincolnshire, including ones in Elsham and Barnetby.
■ At the start of Monday's meeting, Coun Storey was re-elected as chairman of the Town Council's planning committe for a further 12 months, with Coun Donald Campbell re-elected as vice-chairman.

RELIEF FOR BRIGG VISITORS OVER THE NEXT 12 MONTHS

People who are caught short in Brigg may well be grateful for a decision taken by the Town Council at its June meeting held this week.
The town authority will continue to pay to have the Cary Lane toilets opened for use on Sundays and bank holidays.
North Lincolnshire Council owns the Cary Lane conveniences but does not choose to open them on Sundays and public holidays.
For some years now, the Town Council has funded the extra unlocking as a covenience to people visiting the town centre.
This agreement will continue for the next 12 months and is likely to cost £1,400.
Coun James Truepenny said the town was getting busier on Sundays so he fully supported renewal of the service level agreement for Cary Lane.
■ The WCs on East Park - near the war memorial - are not covered by the agreement.

HISTORIC BATTLE OF BRITAIN MEMORIAL FLIGHT PLANE TO GRACE SKIES IN BRIGG AREA - KEEP A LOOK OUT

Many folk living and working in the Brigg area love to watch Second World War era planes from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight whenever they come to our neck of the woods
The BBMF at RAF Coningsby has now confirmed  there will be a flypast by a Hurricane fighter between 4pm and 4.20pm on Sunday, July 16 - weather conditions permitting.
This will be part of a  new Aviation Heritage Festival  for North Lincolnshire.
The festival, which will embrace our local aviation heritage from the early 20th century to now, will take place  at Skydive Hibaldstow.
Events of the past will be brought to life, to educate visitors and celebrate aviation in our area.
A spokesperson for North Lincolnshire Council said: “This festival is a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase the story of northern Lincolnshire’s aviation heritage."
There were WW2 fighters based at the airfields in Hibaldstow and Kirton Lindsey, while bomber stations included Elsham and Kirmington. Many airmen used pubs in Brigg.

BRIGG L.E.D. THE WAY ON LOW ENERGY STREET LIGHTING

A few years ago there was a pilot scheme in our part of Brigg to try out low energy LED street lights.
This project was well received and the leading lights at North Lincolnshire Council said  that other LED street lights would follow, which has proved to be the case.
The council has now given the green light for thousands to be installed.

FROM SARAH HOWE, NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE COUNCIL

North Lincolnshire Council is currently looking for a supplier to replace 21,000 street lights with more efficient LED lights across North Lincolnshire.
The £6m scheme to improve street lights will result in using 50 to 75 per cent less energy than ordinary street lights.
Work on replacing the street lights is expected to start from September 2017.
The council is currently developing the programme of when work will take place and intends to keep residents updated through its website and social media.
Cllr Rob Waltham, Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “It costs the council £1m a year on energy bills for street lights. This is an astronomical amount that increases as energy prices rise."
“By installing new LED lights, we are not only reducing our energy consumption but saving money too.  Ultimately the £1m a year in electricity efficiencies can then be reinvested to support key council services such as Adult Social Care, Highways and Schools things local residents regularly tell us are important to them. "
These new lights are more energy efficient than the current lights and cost significantly less to maintain than the existing lights.
“While some other councils have sought to save money by switching off street lights and reducing street lighting provision we will not.  In my view, communities are safer and residents really benefit from well-lit streets, and I am simply not prepared to compromise on this in the interests of saving money in this area.
“North Lincolnshire council will take a different approach by ensuring that our street lights stay on, using modern LED lighting technology at a much reduced cost to the local tax-payer and of significant benefit to the local environment."

BRIGG REG GROUND IMPROVEMENT PROGRESS REPORT

An update is to be given on progress  to further improve facilities at Brigg Recreation Ground, off Wrawby Road.
North Lincolnshire Council having built a new changing room block with showers, work is now underway to bring the playing square and outfield up to the standard required by the Lincolnshire County Cricket League.
At the league's mid-season meeting to be held in Market Rasen  on Wednesday, July 19th, Brigg Town Cricket Club will have the opportunity to outline progress and future work.
The league's ground inspectors are expected to visit Brigg Rec during September and prepare a report for member clubs to consider at the annual meeting in October.
Brigg are playing this season's division four home games at Hibaldstow and Keelby.

BRIGG SHOP HAS BUSY LAST DAY BEFORE CLOSING

It proved to be a busy last day for a Brigg town centre shop which closed its doors for the final time on  Saturday.
We walked past along Wrawby Street half-a-dozen times and on each occasion the Cookshop was filled with people viewing items on offer in the closing down sale.
These premises - in a different guise - once housed Instone's, the renowned grocery emporium.
Yesterday was farmers' market Saturday and that drew a big attendance - helped by the fine weather.
A good number of visitors have still failed to grasp the fact that car parking is free on Saturdays.
Would a temporary banner or two advising drivers about this welcome concession by North Lincolnshire Council be in order?
These could be located near the entrances.

BRIGG HOUSING AND WAREHOUSE PLANS GO BEFORE COUNCILLORS TONIGHT

Brigg Town Councillors will be considering household and commercial developments tonight.
The Town Council's Planning and Environment Committee will meet in the Angel Suite on Monday, June 26, from 6.45pm.
Planning applications to be considered include:
■ Erect extension to existing warehouse at 37 Station Road.
■ Erect detached triple garage at The Waterfront, Cadney Road.
■ Erect two-storey side extension at 6 Old School Close.
Brigg Town Council is consulted about local applications and can make observations but North Lincolnshire planners have the final say.
Tonight's meeting is open to the public.

SERVING NINE COMMUNITIES NEAR BRIGG

A new vicar is being installed to cater for the spiritual needs of about 3,000 people living  in nine villages and hamlets near Brigg.
The Rev Lee Gabel will be licensed as priest in charge of the North Wolds group of parishes during a ceremony at St Barnabas' Church in Barnetby tomorrow -
Tuesday, June 27, starting at 7.30pm.
The Mayor of North Lincolnshire, Coun Peter Clark - a former Brigg resident - will be among the VIPs attending.
As well as the railway village,  this group of parishes includes Elsham, Kirmington, Melton Ross, Croxton, Great Limber, Bigby, Brocklesby and Somerby.
The benefice is part of the Lincoln Diocese's Yarborough Deanery.
It is interesting to note that the North Wolds group is equally divided between North Lincolnshire and the West Lindsey district of Lincolnshire.
The Church of England is not constrained by local government boundaries.

BRIGG TOWN LEAD THE WAY

Brigg Town Cricket Club heads division four of the Lincolnshire County Cricket League, sponsored by Readers.
The Brigg players were without a league game yesterday but have a six-point lead at the top of the table, having won five of their opening six fixtures.
This coming Saturday, July 1, they will play second-from-bottom Scunthorpe Town 3rds at Hibaldstow, starting at 1.30pm.

BRIGG COUNCIL TO DISCUSS WAR MEMORIAL RENOVATION, ANGEL SUITE REFURB & OTHER TOPICS OF INTEREST

There's much of interest to be debated by Brigg Town Council at its monthly meeting tomorrow tonight, including refurbishment of the Monument war memorial and the Angel Suite - one of the town's main function and event venues.
Other issues to be considered include the public toilets on Cary Lane and Christmas lights in the town centre.
The Town Council meeting in the Angel Suite on Monday, June 26 starts at 7.15pm.
Local people are welcome to attend and can raise issues they feel to be important during Public Question Time, which is listed on the agenda.
Brigg Blog will be attending the meeting and posting reports of the discussions and decisions reached.
One topic to note will be determining whether additional names should be added to the Monument's list remembering local people who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country.
Brigg resident Ken Harrison  asked the council to consider a review and suggested a local nurse killed during World War One should be honoured on one of the inscribed plaques.

A RIDER TO BRIGG HORSE FAIR 2017: OTHER ATTRACTIONS TO ENJOY ON THE DAY

After people have spent a couple of hours watching the steeds being paraded and sold at Brigg Horse Fair 2017 from 9.30am on Saturday, August 5, there will be another event to take in just a few hundred yards from Station Road.
Abbey Village Care Home will be staging a summer fair in its expansive grounds off Wrawby Road, near the Monument war memorial.
This will run from 11am to 3pm and include live entertainment from Gill Hemmings, a barbecue, cake stall, hook a duck, name the teddy, raffle, tombola, clothes stall, hand-made gifts and kids' craft activities.
Proceeds from the fair will go to the residents' comfort fund.
Horse fair visitors on August 5 can also tour the Saturday general market stalls in the town centre and pop in to our niche shops and sample the  range of pubs and eateries..
The Horse Fair will start about 9.30am and continue well into the afternoon.

NEW £6,500 RIVER ANCHOLME FACILITY LAUNCHED IN BRIGG

FROM KIRSTY WESTFIELD, NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE COUNCIL

North Lincolnshire Council and Ancholme River Trust have invested £6,500 to install a new rowing club platform in Brigg on the River Ancholme.
The platform will be used by rowers and canoeists from nearby clubs and support their range of activities on the river.
Both clubs work with the local community and have thriving youth training programmes, so the platform will open up more opportunities for them.
Last year many of the fishing platforms along the River Ancholme were upgraded in a joint initiative with the River Trust and Scunthorpe Amalgamated Anglers Club.
The work forms part of a series of works along the River Ancholme to improve the recreational facilities in the Ancholme Valley and adjacent villages.
Further developments are planned to increase the cycling provision and improve the landscape of Ancholme Valley Way through tree and hedge planting.
Cllr Rob Waltham, Leader of North Lincolnshire Council and Chair of Ancholme River Trust, said: “We are working with all users of the River Ancholme to help them improve their facilities in a bid to make the river a major recreational destination. The River Ancholme has huge potential and we plan on taking full advantage of this.
“In addition we are working closely with landowners to support landscape improvements in the wider valley and will be launching a new landscape improvement grant jointly with the Woodland Trust very soon.
“These improvements complement the work being carried out on the Ancholme Valley Way, which means that not only rowers, swimmers and canoeist can enjoy the River Ancholme but walkers and cyclists can take in the stunning views."

PICTURED AT THE OFFICIAL LAUNCH: Brigg & Goole MP Andrew Percy MP with Brigg & Wolds Ward members Cllr Rob Waltham, Cllr Carl Sherwood and Cllr Nigel Sherwood, Jim Copson of Ancholme Rowing club and others. The platform is located on the river bank adjacent to the rear car park of the B&M store.

N.F. ADDS: Another welcome development for the river in Brigg and at an ideal time of the year. Regular followers of our blog may recall we photographed it a few weeks ago soon after construction.

BRIGG IN BLOOM AWARDED £5K BY NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE COUNCIL

FROM KIRSTY WESTFIELD, NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE COUNCIL

North Lincolnshire Council has awarded £5,000 from its Community Grant Funding pot to Brigg Town Council for their Brigg in Bloom project.
The money was used to buy and install planters throughout Brigg for the summer.
Cllr Carl Sherwood, cabinet member for Community Wellbeing, said:
“The Community Grant Fund helps communities in many ways. Brigg in Bloom is a wonderful project that brings Brigg to life with an array of colours. It is great that we have been able to support Brigg Town Council with Brigg in Bloom this year.
“If you are a local community group that could benefit from a Community Grant Fund, get in touch. Details on the funding can be found at www.northlincs.gov.uk/communitygrants.”
Cllr Sharon Riggall, Mayor of Brigg, said:
"This is our first year supporting Brigg in Bloom, we have received the support of a number of volunteers in the town to help plant and maintain our new planters and borders.  The grant from North Lincolnshire Council gave us a great boost to the Town Council's funding of the project.  It was fantastic to show our MP Andrew Percy the progress we have made so far and to discuss potential plans for the future."
There are three strands to the council’s £648,000 Community Grant Fund: Grants to Individuals, Community Revenue Grants and Community Capital Grants.
Community Grants support community sport, arts and heritage projects with grants of up to £15,000 normally available.
Groups can apply for one grant of up to £30,000 in any five-year period if the total cost of the project is more than £60,000.
You can find out more about the council’s Community Grant Fund scheme by calling 01724 297257 or visiting www.northlincs.gov.uk/communitygrants.

BRIGG SCHOOL REUNION & SOCIAL OPEN TO EX-PUPILS & STAFF

Hot on the heels of a school reunion in Brigg which hundreds of people read about on Brigg Blog comes another - this time aimed mainly at men, although ladies will be welcome to attend.
It will be held on Friday, June 30 at Sir John Nelthorpe School and later at JD Wetherspoon's White Horse pub/restaurant on Wrawby Street - the nearest watering hole.
The Briggensians' Association summer sports reunion will involve a friendly cricket match between a sixth form and talented pupils team under the guidance of Jon Taylor and an ex-pupils Old Boys' X1 led by Messrs Beacock and Richards - noted Brigg Town Cricket Club all-rounders.
Interested players are asked to meet on the school field at 5.30pm for a 6pm start.
Hopefully the weather will be kind.
If not we still expect that Part Two will go ahead at the pub!
The Briggensians' Association represents former pupils and staff of Sir John Nelthorpe School, Brigg Grammar, Brigg Girls' High and Brigg Sixth Form.
SJN was founded in 1976 when comprehensive education was introduced locally by Humberside County Council.
The annual cricket match between the School and the Old Boys was established well before we gained admission to the grammar school in 1967.
Few who support the fixture today went to the grammar and no-one wants the distinction of being the oldest player, though everthing comes to he who waits, as the saying goes!

BRIGG FARMERS' MARKET: RENOWNED FAMILY FOOD FIRMS OF THE PAST COULD HAVE HELPED FEED THE 5,000

The June 2017 farmers' market is being held in Brigg town centre today, in tandem with the stalls of the Saturday general market -  also operated by North Lincolnshire Council.
Hundreds of visitors will enjoy browsing the market stalls and visiting Brigg's many niche shops and wide range of pubs and eateries, plus dropping in at the new craft fair being staged from 11am behind the Nelthorpe Arms near the County Bridge.
Goacher's Fruit will have strawberries, raspberries and gooseberries on sale at Brigg market, it has informed shoppers through Twitter.
Brigg Blog thinks it sad that the locally renowned Turner's butchery business, on Queen Street, which closed in 2000, did not last a few more months.
Its super sausages, pork pies, Lincolnshire haslet and other delicacies could have gone down a storm on the farmers' market, which has now been going for 16 years.
Turner's had closely-guarded family recipes dating back to the founding of the firm when Queen Victoria was the reigning monarch.
For some decades in the last century the family firm sold produce  on Brigg market.
The wares of top quality Instone's grocery, on Wrawby Street, would also have fitted the bill on today's farmers' market.
You may be able to think of others now gone but well remembered for providing quality fare to feed the 5,000 in Brigg.
OK perhaps the official census population figure thrown up by an internet search is out of date and should really be 6,000.
But the biblical number fits in well as you can get loaves and fishes on Brigg market today!
Here endeth the lesson.

DOUBLE DRAW FOR BRIGG VISITORS THIS SATURDAY

There's another double draw Saturday coming up in Brigg on June 24 for shoppers and visitors to enjoy.
Late last month the May farmers' market (pictured) ran in tandem with the riverside festival.
Tomorrow the June farmers' market will be accompanied by a new venture - a craft fair in the Barn venue at the Nelthorpe Arms, off Bridge Street.
Entry to that is free and if you have crafts to sell it costs just a fiver for a stall. Contact the pub without delay.
The farmers' market with its wide range of produce starts at 9am and the fair will begin at 11am.
The general Saturday market will also be held into mid-afternoon in the Market Place and along Wrawby Street.
There's free parking all day, too.
Passenger trains will be serving Brigg railway station tomorrow, Saturday, bringing in visitors from as far away as North Notts.

BUSMAN'S HOLIDAY OBSERVATIONS PAY OFF FOR BRIGG BLOG

Brigg Blog's frequent journeys to and from Scunthorpe on the Hornsby No 4 bus service sometimes result in observations that prove of interest and are worth posting online.
We have been watching the development of a new clinic on Broughton High Street - opposite the Village Hall.
Late last year North Lincolnshire Council granted permission for the former Post Office to be changed to a podiatry and chiropody practice.
The Accolade Clinic can be contacted on 01652 249560.
Being aboard a bus might not be seen as part of everyone's working day but there are clearly exceptions.

BRIGG SCHOOL'S SUMMER FAIR OFFERING FAMILY FU

Fun for all the family will be on offer at a summer fair in Brigg at which everyone is welcome.
Craft stalls, barbeque, drinks, nerf maze, bouncy castle, beat the goalie and face painting will be among the attractions on Saturday, July 22, from noon to 4pm.
The location is St Mary's Catholic Primary Voluntary Academy, Grammar School Road.

BRIGG BANK SERVING FINAL CUSTOMERS TODAY - CASHPOINT CLOSES

Seeing two customers using the cashpoint at a Brigg town centre bank on Tuesday morning reminded us of the phrase "the end of an era."
For the Brigg Market Place branch of HSBC  will serve its last customers at 2.30pm today - Friday, June 23, 2017.
The doors will shut at 2.30pm and the branch will then close.
HSBC has apologised to customers for the inconvenience.
Business is being switched to the big branch on  Scunthorpe High Street.
But what does the future hold for this attractive and sizeable Brigg branch building within the conservation area?
Hopefully it will be put to good use.
9AM UPDATE: The HSBC cash machine outside the branch has already been closed.

BRIGG BIKE NIGHT 2017: RANGE OF ATTRACTIONS TO ENJOY

There will be much more to enjoy at Brigg Bike Night 2017 than inspecting the gleaming BSAs, Nortons and Trumphs of yesteryear and admiring more modern machines.
On Friday, July 7 there will be live music from THREE bands at different venues, plus a range of food, an ice cream van, a children's entertainer and bars to visit for a cooling pint.
Bike Night organiser, landlady Lucy Fensome, has booked 2AM to perform at her Bridge Street hostelry the Yarborough Hunt.
The Dirty Somethings will be playing at the White Hart and The Dirty Pitchers at the Nelthorpe Arms Barn on the other side of Bridge Street.
A handsome trophy will be awarded this time to the owner of the best bike in attendance.
Bike Night - starting at 5.30pm - has been extended into the Market Place this year.
The change will result in more bikers and spectators heading into town to enjoy this free event.
For the benefit of those living outside Brigg who may need sat nav assistance to find the venue, use DN20 8NS.

Plans to build a new petrol station - with shop - in the Brigg area have been submitted to North Lincolnshire Council.
The local authority must now decide whether to give the go ahead for the scheme which will create four new jobs.
The new service station is earmarked for Barnetby Top to serve drivers on the M180 and A15 as well as locals.
It will replace an existing facility and involve the demolition of an existing restaurant building.

IS THIS A BRIGG FAST FOOD RECORD?

Brigg Blog is wondering whether a local fast food record has been set.
We had been down in London for a few days on a family visit - hence the absence of weekend posts - and arrived back in Brigg on Sunday evening by taxi from Scunthorpe, having returned from the capital to the steel town on an air-conditioned National Express coach bound for Hull.
Fancying an Indian meal in the hot weather, we visited the Diya Spice on Bigby Street but, reckoning on a wait of half-an-hour, asked the proprietor to deliver the takeaway.
We set off walking and as we turned into our cul-de-sac the delivery vehicle from the Diya Spice overtook us and their man was waiting at the door when we arrived home.
Talk about fast food!
A fine feast it was, too. And with the additional pickle tray we added to our order it made another meal of renowned medium-to-hot Murgh Chadni the following day.
Just as well we resisted the temptation to call in for a cool pint at the Britannia while walking home on Sunday in heat that reminded us of a holiday spent in Marmaris, Turkey - a resort also renowned for a fine range of spicy dishes.

BRIGG SCHOOL REUNION FOR EX-PUPILS TOMORROW

A school reunion will take place in Brigg tomorrow - Wednesday, June 21.
Organiser Helen Cresswell, of the  Briggensians' Association, has kindly confirmed that the annual ladies' rounders match at Sir John Nelthorpe School will go ahead with players meeting from 6pm to 6.15pm.
That's weather permitting, of course.
The annual men's cricket game  will be on a Friday night in July -  date to be announced on Brigg Blog when confirmed by organiser Jon Taylor.
The Briggensians' Association represents former pupils and staff of SJN, Brigg Grammar, Brigg Girls' High and Brigg Sixth Form.
Sir John Nelthorpe School was founded in 1976 when comprehensive education was introduced in Brigg by Humberside County Council.
It meant closure of the grammar and high schools.

LINCOLNSHIRE SHOW 2017: IMPORTANT INFORMATION IF YOU ARE TRAVELLING FROM THE BRIGG AREA

There's welcome news for people from the Brigg area who are driving down to just north of Lincoln to enjoy the Lincolnshire Show 2017 tomorrow and/or Thursday, June 21 and 22.
North Lincolnshire Council has suspended work it is carrying out on the A15 which would otherwise have added to show visitors' journey time.
We always go to Lincoln on the B-road route through Scawby Brook, Hibaldstow and Redbourne but many Brigg drivers prefer to go to Forest Pines near Broughton and then head south along the A15.
The cost of a daily adult ticket if you pay at the gate is £24. Or visit Brigg Tourist Information Centre at the Buttercross to buy tickets in advance for the county's biggest annual spectator event.

FROM NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE COUNCIL

North Lincolnshire Council is currently carrying out road surface dressing work on the A15 running between the M180 roundabout and down to the B1206 Redbourne Mere junction. This work will be temporarily suspended on Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22 June when Lincolnshire Show is taking place.
The work to improve the condition of the road surface will resume on Friday 23 June.
There will be an increased amount of traffic on the A15 travelling to Lincolnshire Show and the council has acted to temporarily suspend the works to make sure that motorists do not experience any additional delays.
A temporary 10mph speed limit will still apply due to loose chippings on the road.
A North Lincolnshire Council spokesperson, said: “The A15 is one of the main routes for people travelling to Lincolnshire Show and we anticipate a big increase in the amount of traffic using the road over the two days that the event is taking place.
“We have asked the contractors working on the A15 to temporarily suspend what they are doing for the two days of the show. It is hoped this will help the traffic to be free flowing and avoid any added hold ups for motorists.
“Unfortunately there are still loose chippings on the road so for safety reasons, a 10mph speed limit will remain in place.”

NF ADDS: Take your pick of routes but the B-road option through Hibaldstow seems the best option for Brigg drivers.
