BRIGG COUNTY BRIDGE MAY YET GET MAJOR REVAMP

Hopes that Brigg may yet get a major refurbishment of the County Bridge have been expressed by the only Freeman of the Town, Tom Glossop, of St Helen's Road.
North Lincolnshire Council has repaired the historic bridge in recent months, removing the tatty metal railings in favour of something more in keeping with the Conservation Area, and a "listed" structure, undertaking resurfacing and reopening a long-closed walkway.
Tom Glossop, who campaigned long and hard through the Friends of the County Bridge pressure group for major refurbishment, stresses the application for funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund for the long-planned major upgrade is "only dormant" and has not been ruled out by North Lincolnshire Council's recent improvements. Tom believes there is still a strong possibility of funding.
"It's of great interest to me to see this progressed," he told the Annual Brigg Town Meeting in the Angel Suite.
Coun Rob Waltham, a member of North Lincolnshire Council's ruling Cabinet and a Brigg town councillor, said the County Bridge project remained part of the heritage group's plans.
Coun Nigel Sherwood, fellow member of the Cabinet, explained North Lincolnshire Council's recent work on the bridge had been undertaken as a highways scheme.
"The County Bridge has been tidied up," he said. "It looks a lot better than it did."

GENEROUS BRIGG FIRM SUPPORTS JERRY GREEN DOG CENTRE

Dogs at the Jerry Green Dog Centre in Broughton are barking happy after a generous donation from the kind-hearted team at Thomas Bell Country Store in Brigg.
The centre currently has more than 60 dogs in its care and relies on donations from individuals and businesses to allow them to keep up the excellent work they carry out.
Well known for stocking a wide range of pet food, treats and accessories, staff at Thomas Bell Country Store donated a pallet of their popular own brand beef and vegetable dog food to help feed the many mouths at the centre.
Fundraising manager Jill Shaw said: “Without the ongoing support and generosity of companies and individual dog-lovers it would be impossible to continue to take in so many dogs, look after them and re-home them.
“Everyone involved really appreciates the care and kindness shown through the many donations we receive and the pallet of food from Thomas Bell Country Store will help to feed a lot of our dogs.”
Graeme King, of Thomas Bell Country Store, said: “We always look to support pet and equine charities in the region and the team at Jerry Green Dog Centre help to rescue and re-home hundreds of dogs each year.
“I am sure the pallet of dog food will be put to very good use and we are looking to work with the charity on an ongoing basis in the future.”

BRIGG COMMUNITY-LED PLAN UPDATE

Much work has been going on in recent months, under the chairmanship of Coun the Rev Alec Depledge,  to draw up the first Brigg Community-Led Plan, at the instigation of Brigg Town Council. This is a blueprint for how townsfolk want to see our community develop in the future and a draft report will be unveiled on Monday. The latest meeting, involving councillors and members of the public working on the Plan was held on Thursday night and proved very interesting. Even Brigg Blog managed a few small contributions to the debate!
Don't miss the Annual Brigg Town Meeting, which starts at 7.30am in the Angel Suite. All members of the public are welcome to attend.  You can raise any topic of interest to you and hear various progress reports relating to the past year in Brigg.

VANS IN BRIGG TOWN CENTRE - POSITION CLARIFIED

At a recent meeting of a Brigg Town Council committee, very useful clarification was given on exactly which business premises in the town centre are permitted to receive delivery/collection vehicles within the pedestrian area.
Information received from one of the highway officers at North Lincolnshire Council suggests only business premises which do NOT benefit from a separate vehicular access outside the pedestrian area can obtain permits allowing them to receive deliveries, load and unload through the traffic-free zone.
This was in line with what Brigg Blog always thought to be the case when the Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) was drawn up some years ago. But memory can play tricks, so it's useful to have this reminder available in the public domain.
Clearly, some Brigg businesses have rear access from Old Courts Road, while the vast majority on the church side of Wrawby Street do not benefit from back entrances.
There is much concern about the number of vehicles encountered and observed by shoppers and members of the public in Wrawby Street and the Market Place - not just delivery vans and lorries by any means. Many of them belong to people using cashpoints or, in some cases, taking a convenient short cut.
Sadly, a second piece of information is less welcome: Town councillors have been informed that civil parking enforcement officers working for North Lincolnshire Council do NOT have the powers to issue penalty tickets to drivers from contravene the TRO. That, it seems, is purely a matter for the police.
Brigg Blog was unaware that's the situation. And we are sure that many townsfolk will also have assumed that traffic enforcement officers have the powers to enforce anything to do with traffic.
During the town council committee meeting when this issue was raised, it was suggested that any Brigg folk who witness a vehicle being driven through the pedestrian area should take the registration number and pass it on to local police "for further investigation."
Brigg Blog would suggest that, even if the police had the resources to follow up such leads, their only real hope rests with the CCTV system catching the offending drivers on camera.
But it would be a very time-consuming business to view the footage, especially if only an approximate time was forwarded to the authorities by a well-meaning member of the public.
So the wheel turns full circle yet again, with, we would suggest, precious little hope of any real change in the situation.

BRIGG RESIDENTS URGED TO SPONSOR SWIMMERS

Energetic staff at Ancholme Leisure Centre - just outside Brigg - have set themselves a gruelling challenge of an overnight 140-mile swim in aid of Sport Relief.
Forty volunteers will take it in turns to swim 20 lengths of the leisure centre’s 25 metre pool between 8pm on Saturday, March 24 and 8am the next morning.
They’ll each have to swim about 4.5 miles (or 9,216 lengths) in 12 hours in teams of four to complete the 140 mile trip - equal to the distance comedian David Walliams swam along the Thames for Sport Relief last year.
Staff members ranging from receptionists to life guards are training hard for the epic swim and want to raise as much money as possible for Sport Relief to help improve the lives of people in the UK and across the world.
To sponsor them visit http://my.sportrelief.com/sponsor/ancholmeleisurecentre140mileovernight12hourswim or pick up a sponsor form at the leisure centre.
Everyone who sponsors online will be entered into a raffle with many top prizes ranging from beauty treatments and a photo shoot to shopping vouchers and VIP tickets to the Sugar Hut nightclub featured in The Only Way is Essex.
You can also make a donation in one of the collection boxes on reception at Ancholme Leisure Centre, Hewson House or Civic Centre.
Leisure centre duty manager Andy Farr said: “We’ve set ourselves the target of matching the distance comedian David Walliams swam in the Thames last year.
“There are 40 of us taking part and we’ll have to swim more than 9,000 lengths - that’s about 4.5 miles.
“I’d like to thank all the swimmers taking part and everyone who is supporting us, especially the Sugar Hut for the vouchers and Lincsquad.
“It’s going to be a very long night but we’re all training hard.
“Please do take the time to sponsor us or make a donation, we want to raise as much as we can."

NO OBJECTION TO BRIGG STORE PLAN

Brigg Town Council has raised no objections to Brian's DIY changing the use of the first floor to retail and adding a new fire escape.
Chairman Coun Ben Nobbs told last night's meeting of the Planning and Environment Committee that the first floor was currently used for storage.
An application for replacement advertising signs at the Wilkinson store, in Cary Lane, was held over to the next meeting, as the application had only just been received.
North Lincolnshire Council planners have the final say on all development applications, but Brigg town councillors must be consulted as part of the process.

TENDERS INVITED FOR BRIGG RIVER LITTER-CLEARING

Brigg Town Council is to invite tenders for cleaning litter from the River Ancholme.
One company has already shown an interest.
It could take up to six weeks before the tender period is complete and quotes are considered, with a view to agreeing a contact.
Litter often gets tangled up with weed during the summer months and remains there for some time, making the river look untidy.
The annual spring clean will still go ahead in May, with volunteers scouring the towpath and nearby foliage,  picking up accumulated litter.
Our picture shows the spring cleaning team near the County Bridge last May - about to set off down the towpath towards the motorway bridge, collecting litter.

BRIGG MONEY-MAKING OPPORTUNITY?

Where are all the lorries that park up in Brigg overnight going to go when the existing Lidl car park disappears to make way for the new Tesco?
OK, it's some way into the future. But there must be scope for some enterprising Brigg businessman or businesswoman with a bit of spare land, or a yard, to make some extra dosh here.
There must have been a dozen parked up near Lidl last night.
You'd think most of these overnight drivers might pop into town after they've parked up.
So our businesses could do without losing their custom, which will be the case if no alternative can be found in Brigg and they find a truck stopover somewhere else.
Presumably, if there was a proper, or semi-official lorry park, for which charges were levied, various regulations, including planning consent, might well apply. But it could still make economic sense for someone during these hard times.

BRIGG GROUP LEARNS ABOUT CROSBY ANGEL

REPORT AND PICTURE FROM GRAHAM AUSTIN

The March Brigg Amateur Social Historians (BASH) talk was given by Pat Smith and Stephen Rimmington at Brigg and District Servicemen's Club.
Pat’s talk was about the Crosby Angel in Scunthorpe and the men whose names are on the memorial.
The Friends of Crosby Angel were formed and research work was done to identify the men named and how they found out information about their short lives, their families and finally where they are buried.
Pat described in detail how the research was carried out and also showed pictures of Crosby as it was when the Angel was erected. The groups hard work led to the publication of a book and the first sales were enough to have the Angel restored and eventually re dedicated.
Proceeds from sales now go to Help the Heroes and The Royal British Legion.
Stephen gave a talk about his relative Jack Rimmington and what had happened to him and about his eventual death.
Jack is one of the names on the Angel and during his life he lived 15 miles from his cousin and in death they are buried 15 miles apart in France. His cousin also having lost his life in that terrible war.
The next presentation will be on Tuesday  April 3 and given by Dr Geoffrey Duffield.
It is called "Shapes do not just happen - They are made" covering Victorian to 1950s Foundation Wear.

Pictured, from the left, Stephen Rimmington (speaker), Pat Smith (speaker), Chris Witty (BASH committee), Jill Molnar & Susie Broadbent (Friends of Crosby Angel).

BRIGG SUPPORT FOR BROADBAND CHALLENGE

Brigg Town Council is responding to the broadband challenge showing the real need for online improvements across northern Lincolnshire.
Parish and town councils have been approached to help spread the word.
The more people and businesses that sign up, the more evidence there will be to persuade  commercial providers that there is a business case for faster broadband investment in North & North East Lincolnshire.
During the latest Parish Liaison meeting at the Civic Centre in Scunthorpe, Sally McDavid made a presentation and challenged each parish to get 100 residents and 10 businesses (no matter how large or small) to register interest in getting faster broadband.
North Lincolnshire Council and North East Lincolnshire Council have joined forces to secure £2.62m in government funding in order to "incentivise" commercial broadband suppliers to invest in our Northern Lincolnshire rural areas.
This project is called the South Humber Broadband programme.
The target is to get 100 per cent of the South Humber area onto broadband and at least 90 per cent of the population receiving superfast broadband (>25 Mb/s) by March 2015.
To find out more about the South Humber Broadband programme, visit www.shumberbroadband.info
If broadband is important to you personally or for business, please spend a few minutes completing one of our surveys to help bring superfast broadband to North Lincolnshire.
For more information, contact John Bullivent, South Humber Broadband Programme Director, email john.bullivent@northlincs.gov.uk or call 01724 296936.

BRIGG JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS COMING TOGETHER WELL

The organisers of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in Brigg on Monday, June 4 continue to press ahead with their hard work to ensure it proves a day to remember.
Brigg Town Council has now  approved a donation of £2,000 and has also  put aside a further £1,000 for any shortfall if the committee is unable to raise further funds from businesses or  through other grants being sought.
Coun Mel Oades told the Town Council’s monthly meeting in the Angel Suite that this  event deserved support, as it was something everyone in Brigg could attend. The whole town would benefit from Brigg Town Council’s assistance, he suggested.
There will be events in the Market Place in the morning, followed by a parade to the Recreation Ground for afternoon events and attractions.
The parade will form outside Peacock and Binnington’s premises.
The Town Mayor and Mayoress will travel in a classic car; the newly-crowned Queen of the Carnival and her attendants  will be in a horse and carriage.
Fancy dress competition entrants, to be judged by the Town Mayor and Mayoress, will also feature in the parade, as will Koko Ryu students, St John Ambulance Badgers, John Turner’s Black Belt Academy students, Batons of Steel cheerleaders, a Chinese dragon, Scouts and Guides,  Cadets and the Cadet Band and the Royal British Legion (to be invited).
