10 NEW JOBS COULD BE CREATED IN THE BRIGG AREA

Ten new full-time jobs could be created in the Brigg area through an addition to existing business premises.
Lincoln & York Ltd is now seeking planning permission from North Lincolnshire Council for improved storage facilities near to its current premises.
A statement submitted in support of the application says: "Lincoln and York was founded in 1994 and has grown over 25 years in business to become the region’s premier coffee supplier, serving over 250 commercial customers within the out-of-home market.
"Their current base at Elsham Wold Industrial Estate is a state-of-the-art facility employing many people from the area (approx. 82 people) and contributing to the local business economy.
"It is estimated a further 10 jobs could be created as a result of these proposals."
Council planners are now considering the application for Plot 12a, The Flarepath, Elsham.

HOPING TO SEE YOU AT THE BRIGG CHRISTMAS LIGHTS 2019 SWITCH-ON TONIGHT

Just a reminder that the 2019 Christmas lights will be switched on in Brigg town centre tonight (Friday, November 29).
There will be the familiar 5-4-3-2-1 countdown prior to the illuminations coming on at 5pm.
A big crowd made up of the young and not-so-young will assemble in the Market Place to watch the switch-on ceremony which will involve Scunthorpe pantomime star Annie Fanny.
The LED lights - on display throughout the town centre - will stay on well into the New Year. They are funded and arranged by Brigg Town Council.
After browsing the many fair/market stalls organised by Brigg District Lions and listening to the varied music provided on the temporary stage in the Market Place, please support local shops, pubs (some offering their own musical entertainment) and fast food outlets.
Many shops will be staying open late so people can buy Christmas gifts, and don't forget to take a look at the niche outlets located in the courtyards off Wrawby Street.
We hope to see you out and about in Brigg tonight - supporting one of the town's major community events.

Special measures are in place to monitor litter bins on Friday evening, and also to collect any discarded items that find their way onto the streets. A litter-picking session will begin in the Market Place on Saturday (November 30) at 8pm. Volunteers very welcome.

Performance of Live Music (Indoors)
Monday to Friday, 19:00-22:30hrs
Saturday, 15:00-23:00hrs
Sunday, 13:00-22:00hrs
Playing of Recorded Music (Indoors)
Monday to Saturday, 18:00-22:30hrs
Sunday, 13:00-22:30hrs
Supply of Alcohol for Consumption On the Premises
Monday to Saturday, 12:00-22:30hrs
Sunday, 13:00-22:00hrs
Opening Hours of the Premises
Monday to Saturday, 09:00-22:30hrs
Sunday, 09:00-22:00hrs
The premises licence application, made on November 21, will be decided in due course by North Lincolnshire Council.
Consulted on the proposal, Brigg Town Council has raised no objections.
During a meeting of the Planning & Environment Committee, held in the Angel Suite on Monday (November 25), chairman Coun Brian Parker, the Deputy Town Mayor, said he could not see a problem.
Town Mayor Coun Sharon Riggall added: "It's a thriving business."
Coun Jane Kitching thought the intention was to play Spanish-style music, while Coun Ann Eardley pointed out that some pubs in the town centre already played music.
La Finca - located on the ground floor of the Angel building adjoining the Cafe Courtyard - occupies an area which was  the Angel Hotel wine shop many years ago.

RARE CHANCE TO WATCH TWO FOOTBALL MATCHES IN BRIGG ON THE SAME AFTERNOON

Brigg Town Football Club will be hoping to attract another decent-sized crowd for the home game with Nostell Miners Welfare at the EC Surfacing Stadium (Hawthorns) on Saturday, November 30 (3pm KO).
Nostell, from the Wakefield area, are fifth in ToolStation Northern Counties East Division One - 11 places and 11 points above Brigg.
Mid-table Brigg Town Reserves will be visiting Cleethorpes Town Reserves in the Balcan Lighting Supplies Lincolnshire League Premier.
At Brigg Recreation Ground on Saturday, Briggensians will be bidding to secure a cup final place. They host Limestone Rangers Reserves in a Tortank Barton Brotherhood Cup 'semi' which kicks off at 1.30pm.
So spectators have an opportunity to watch all - or most - of the cup-tie at the Rec and then make a short walk to take in Brigg Town v Nostell.

PLAN TO BUILD NEW HOMES IN BRIGG REJECTED

A scheme aimed at building three new town houses in the centre of Brigg has been refused by North Lincolnshire Council.
The suggested site - pictured above - is to the rear of 53 Wrawby Street and facing Cross Street.
The long-vacant land - once occupied by buildings - is currently used as car parking for authorised users (not the general public).
This application - submitted in June 2017 - was finally decided by North Lincolnshire Council's Planning Committee at a meeting held recently in Scunthorpe.
The council gave three reasons for refusing this development, saying:

  • It would result in a loss of privacy to an adjacent residential property.
  • A terrace of three two-bedroomed properties would result in a cramped appearance and over-development of the site.
  • The proposed development is not considered to preserve or enhance the character and appearance of the Brigg Conservation Area or the setting of adjacent listed buildings.
Anyone refused planning permission by a local authority has the right to lodge an appeal, to be considered by an appointed inspector, should they wish to do so.

ADDED EXTRAS AT THE BRIGG CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCH-ON 2019 ON FRIDAY NIGHT

The Brigg Christmas lights 2019 switch-on, festive fair & market, and late night shopping event in the town centre will feature some extra attractions this Friday (November 29).
The all-important illuminations - provided by Brigg Town Council - will be switched on at 5pm from a temporary stage in the Market Place, with Scunthorpe pantomime star Annie Fanny involved in the ceremony.
Brigg District Lions have let all the stalls for their festive fair/market (open from 4.30pm) while many shops will be staying open light so visitors can do a spot of Christmas shopping.

Fast food will be available from various outlets in the town centre.
Added attractions this Friday evening include:

  • 'Sampler Night' tapas at the recently-launched La Finca Spanish-themed restaurant on the ground floor of the Angel building. Pop in and take a look!
  • Almost Pink Tribute Night at Brigg & District Servicemen's Club, Coney Court, from 8.30pm. Admission £5 - in aid of charity.
  • Launch of the new Jerry Green Dog Rescue charity shop on Springs Parade (open from Friday lunchtime).
  • Blyton Ice Cream 'all you can eat' crepe and waffle quiz night, including new winter flavours, at its Wrawby Street shop, 6pm to 8pm.

  • White Horse Football Club reunion at Wetherspoon's, from 7pm.
There's free parking available in Brigg's main car parks on Friday night - courtesy of North Lincolnshire Council. However, with well over 1,000 people likely to attend on Friday night, Brigg Blog's advice is to get into town as early as you can.

BRIGG GRANT WILL HELP FUND COMMUNAL CHRISTMAS MEAL 2019

Brigg Town Council has now presented a £342 grant to help meet the cost of staging a communal Christmas meal in the Angel Suite for about 90 people who might otherwise be on their own during the 2019 festive season.
This public-spirited event will take place on Saturday, December 28.
Brigg Angels Women's Institute is working alongside other community groups so these local people can enjoy a Christmas celebration, including a hot meal, entertainment and a gift.
The event is aimed at Brigg residents who do not have the opportunity to spend Christmas with family and friends.
The cheque was received on behalf of the organisers during the Town Council meeting held on Monday night (November 25) in the Angel Suite Lounge. Town Mayor Coun Sharon Riggall made the presentation.
In a welcome and recently introduced move, the Town Council is now seeking to present grants in person, rather than posting cheques to groups that have made successful applications for financial assistance.
The council sets aside funds in its annual budget for local grants. Applications can be made at any time, stating how much is being requested and why the money is needed. All applications must be accompanied by a current statement of accounts/balance sheet.

BRIGG FLOOD ALERT IN PLACE

The Environment Agency put another flood alert in place last night (Tuesday, November 27, 2019) for the Lower River Ancholme which includes the Brigg area.
So mind how you go when walking near the river, as some paths could be affected.
The Agency says it expects the level of the river to remain high over the new few days.
It is planning to give a further update today (Wednesday).

A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE - SIR JOHN NELTHORPE SCHOOL'S BRIGG & WRAWBY FUN RUN

Memories came flooding back for Brigg Blog when we took a walk to Brick Yard Lane, Wrawby, to photograph some of the competitors from Sir John Nelthorpe School who were taking part in a charity fun run.
The event - involving various year groups - reminded us of our time at Brigg Grammar School in the late 1960s and early 1970s when cross-country runs were mandatory for all boys unless you had a very, very good reason.
We are told this was the first time SJN pupils had used the Brickyard Lane course for something like 20 years.
Teacher Jon Taylor was among the many marshals - staff and volunteers - on duty. And having met up at the A18 end of Brick Yard Lane we told him it was a trip down Memory Lane.
Jon has kindly furnished us with further pictures to complement our own, and he's added the following report...
The Sir John Nelthorpe school Fun Run was held on Wednesday 20th November to coincide with the 350 years celebration of the school.    A variety of activities have been running throughout the week to celebrate 100 years of the Girls' High school and 350 years of the Boys Grammar and Sir John Nelthorpe School. The PE department resurrected the old Brick yard Lane course that was used throughout the 70's, 80's and early 90's.  Over 500 runners completed the course throughout the day and a number of staff also donned their running shoes. A number of past students and staff came to help marshal the course with the Sixth Form, including Bill and Lesley Eldridge, Steve Baggott, Rich and Jenny Rivron and Helen Cresswell. The Fun Run was a sponsored event and the money raised will be distributed to a number of good causes including the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research, Martin House, Lindsey Lodge.  All the pupils thoroughly enjoyed the day and many completed the heavily marshalled route in less than 25 minutes.
The quickest times of the day were Harry Barker (Y10) and Cortez Reilly (Y9) who both completed the 3.6KM course in under 14 minutes. The pupils enjoyed it so much that they have asked to do it again next year.

BRIGG VICAR LEAVING TO TAKE UP NEW APPOINTMENT

A farewell presentation has been made to well-known Brigg Vicar, Father Owain Mitchell, who is moving parishes to take up a new appointment at New Mills, Derbyshire.
He also administers to the spiritual needs of parishioners in Worlaby, Cadney & Howsham, Wrawby and Bonby.
Father Owain's final service at St John's Church, Brigg, will be held on Sunday, December 29.
Since coming to Brigg he has also served as Chaplain to a number of Town Mayors - saying prayers at the beginning of scores of council meetings held in the Angel Suite and
officiating at annual Civic Services and those held on Remembrance Sunday..
Current Town Mayor, Coun Sharon Riggall, made a presentation to him on behalf of fellow councillors and staff prior to the authority's latest meeting, held on Monday (November 25), Father Owain expressed his thanks for the gift and card and extended his best wishes to Brigg Town Council for the future.
He will be taking charge at his new Peak District parish, and its St George's Church, during the New Year.
Under the heading 'Important Announcement' his new parish says on its website it is delighted to announce his appointment.
"We also pray for the congregations he will be leaving as they now prepare to seek and appoint a new Vicar," it adds.
New Mills is in north-west Derbyshire and has a population of approximately 10,500 - so it's much larger than Brigg.
Brigg Blog has contacted the Lincoln Diocese, requesting to be kept informed about the appointment of Father Owain's successor.
The St John's Church website says he has been the Vicar of Brigg, Wrawby and Cadney-cum-Howsham since 2005, and the Vicar of Worlaby and Bonby since 2010.
He grew up in the East Yorkshire village of Patrington, and attended Withernsea High School. After training for the Priesthood at The College of the Resurrection in Mirfield, he served in Bridlington before moving to Brigg.
We remember interviewing him for the Scunthorpe Telegraph when his move to our town was announced in 2005.

POTENTIAL BRIGG LIFE-SAVER INSTALLED BY FREEMASONS

The Freemasons of Brigg have installed a defibrillator on the outside of their building on Cary Lane within the town centre.
It will provide emergency support to anyone suffering from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SAC).
"Using one within three minutes can increase the chance of survival to over 70% (according to the LIVES website), and so this central location is ideal for our community," the Freemasons say.
The Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) was purchased by the Freemasons and is under the supervision of LIVES, who respond to medical emergencies prior to the arrival of the ambulance service.
"The movement of the AED units is a province-wide initiative and will result in over 20 units being available for public access across the county," the Freemasons add.

SOME BRIGG TOWN CENTRE PARKING BAYS UNAVAILABLE THIS WEEK

Some parking bays within Brigg town centre will be unavailable this week.
The temporary suspension operates on Queen Street from Monday, November 25-Friday, November 29 inclusive.
This is to allow essential work to be undertaken by a gas network company.
Public notices from North Lincolnshire Council - the local highway authority - are displayed on Queen Street and explain that this restriction applies 24 hours a day.
The China Garden takeaway and Wetherspoon's White Horse pub/restaurant are located nearby.
'Give and take' traffic controls are planned due to "some carriageway incursion" taking place - but drivers passing through this part of town are advised that delays are unlikely to result.

BRIGG SPORTSMAN A CUT ABOVE WHEN IT COMES TO CHARITY FUNDRAISING

Brigg sportsman Chris Rodgers has raised around £1,000 for a worthy cause AND helped a youngster in need.
He had his "long and luscious locks" carefully snipped off, free of charge, by Sarah’s Retreat at 3 Morley Yard in Brigg town centre.
A well-known Brigg footballer, Chris is donating his hair to The Little Princess Trust which make wigs for children who have lost theirs due to cancer treatment and other conditions. It can cost £500 just to create one hairpiece.
Prior to the weekend, Chris gave Brigg Blog an update on the fundraising and sent us these photographs.
"Currently on £977.80 so it will hopefully get to the £1,000 mark, and the positive comments and messages have been brilliant," he said.
There's still time to donate to Chris's Big Cut online, using this link...
