7 MARKET PLACE IN BRIGG (UPDATE)

The sign in the window says 7 Market Place in Brigg has been sold subject to contract by North Lincolnshire Council. We've heard the same from other sources. So it should not be long before the prominent Georgian listed building in the town centre gets yet another owner/owners.

CROSSING IMPROVEMENTS PLEDGED IN BRIGG

Zebra crossing improvements for Bigby Road in Brigg - near the Nisa Local shop - have been announced by Coun Nigel Sherwood (Brigg and Wolds), the Cabinet Member for Highways and Neighbourhoods.
He revealed the scheme to Brigg town councillors at their monthly meeting in the Angel Suite, describing it as a total revamp.

BRIGG DEVELOPMENT PLANS WILL INTEREST MANY IN THE TOWN

The initial part of the planning process, Brigg Town Council, has raised no objections to two applications in which there will be plenty of interest.
The first is for change of use from auction rooms to a retail shop, with associated internal and external alterations, at the former Brown & Co premises, off Old Courts Road (pictured above by KEN HARRISON).
The second is to erect a single storey extension at Brigg Primary School, on Atherton Way.
Coun Penny Smith suggested no objections be raised to the auction room application, suggesting it should go ahead as soon as possible.
It is understood the school extension relates to extending nursery provision. And Coun Mel Oades, chairman of the Town Council's Planning and Environment Committee, told this week's meeting in the Angel Suite, that the authorities were trying to make the facility "reasonably sized."
Decisions on both these applications can be expected in the not too distant future from North Lincolnshire Council planners.

BRIGG HONOURS ITS DIAMOND JUBILEE ORGANISERS

Couns Ann Eardley (left), Sheila Boughey and Ben Nobbs at one of the early public meetings  held in the Angel Suite to plan the town's Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
They won't be striking a special medal for the unpaid, volunteer helpers who worked so hard to make possible the Brigg Diamond Jubilee Celebrations staged at the beginning of this month in the town centre and down at the Recreation Ground, off Wrawby Road.
However, we understand that thanks have been extended from the event organisers to those who helped. And, at the monthly meeting of Brigg Town Council this week, the Town Mayor, Coun Carl Sherwood, suggested an official vote of thanks should go to the committee for overseeing the event.
The Town Council fully supported the Town Mayor's proposal: "On behalf of the community, the Town Council should place on record its thanks to the Brigg Diamond Jubilee Committee for all their hard work in organising the celebrations enjoyed in Brigg."
He added during the meeting in the Angel Suite: "I just cannot say enough about what the committee did in such a short space of time."
Coun Ben Nobbs, who chaired the Jubilee Committee, said the event would not have happened without the Town Council pledging a "case of need" grant of up to £2,000 "to allow things to get started." Further support had then come from North Lincolnshire Council. He said of the Jubilee Celebrations: "I think it was a good day."
The final figure for the cost of the event is not yet known, but it seems the amount Brigg Town Council will be requested to contribute will be well below £2,000.
The Diamond Jubilee event in Brigg was first mooted at a meeting in the New Year, with a heartening attendance at the initial public meeting. Many ideas for events were forthcoming over several months. Then came the hard work of putting everything in place for many townsfolk, of all ages, to enjoy on the big day as the Queen celebrated her 60th anniversary.

CONCERNS OVER PEDESTRIAN SAFETY IN BRIGG

Uncaring motorists continue to ignore the "no right turn" restrictions when exiting the slip road leading to the Tesco store. Their aim is to cut out the need to go left for a short distance to use the roundabout and then return along the A18.
However, it is disconcerting for pedestrians crossing the road at this point, who should not be encountering cars turning right.
Coun Ann Eardley raised the issue when Brigg Town Council met this week in the Angel Suite. She described the situation as dangerous and added: "It's getting ridiculous now."
Town Mayor Coun Carl Sherwood, who was chairing the meeting, added: "It is bad." He suggested that if anyone observed the registration numbers of vehicles ignoring the "no right turn" restriction they should pass the information on to the police.
It was also suggested the Town Mayor could flag up the problem at a future meeting of the Brigg Neighbourhood Action Team (NAT) which includes the police, parish and unitary councillors.

BRIGG WELCOMES OLYMPIC TORCH TODAY

By now, just about everyone in Brigg will be aware that the Olympic Torch is to be paraded through the town centre this afternoon. A great day for the town it will prove, with people of all ages turning out to watch it pass by. Pupils from local schools will be among those turning out to watch.
Last night, prior to the meeting of Brigg Town Council, we asked Town Mayor Coun Carl Sherwood (above) for his thoughts. He described it as a once-in-a-lifetime event. "And I strongly believe this creates a feel good factor amongst the community," he added.
You can find out the times and the places to be by viewing the extensive coverage on www.thisisscunthorpe.co.uk and www.briggpeople.co.uk
The same sites will also be offering pictures and reports as the drama unfolds this afternoon. So keep logging on for updates.

TECHNOLOGY IS A WONDERFUL THING IN BRIGG

A number of requests for action by North Lincolnshire Council were made during the monthly meeting of Brigg Town Council last night and were duly noted by Coun Nigel Sherwood (North Lincs Cabinet member for highways and neighbourhoods) and Coun Rob Waltham (Cabinet member for People). They both had their hand-held computer tablets with them. And by the end of the meeting, Brigg Blog noted that Coun Rob had already keyed in the essential info on his for future reference. Impressive technology on tap, we must say!

TASTY TREATS FROM BRIGG TESCO

There's a good reader offer coming up in the Scunthorpe Telegraph next Thursday for whose with a sweet tooth who shop at Tesco in Brigg - so we thought we'd draw your attention to it.

BRIGG LITTER CLEANING OF RIVER GOING SWIMMINGLY

Brigg Town councillors this week took stock of the new litter-clearing contract on the River Ancholme and the annual Brigg Spring Clean, both organised by the council.
A specialist company (see picture above by KEN HARRISON) is being hired to extract litter from the Ancholme about every six weeks, through to September.
As Brigg Town Council's Planning and Environment Committee considered the progress being made, Coun Ann Eardley said of the contracting firm's recent visit to the river: "They did a good job."
Thanks were expressed for the way in which Glanford Boat Club had assisted by making facilities available as a base for the operation, and it was agreed to send a thank-you letter.
The annual Brigg Spring Clean undertaken on dry land by volunteers collected a good deal of litter and prompted Coun Eardley, who was involved on  the day, to observe the high number of discarded cigarette ends to be seen in the town centre, including some of the courtyards.
She thought this related to people being unable to smoke inside businesses and going outside to do so.
Coun Eardley also considered thrown-away chewing gum to be a similar litter issue and wondered whether bins might be provided, as in Scunthorpe.
However, this was not felt to be a practical proposition. Coun Mel Oades - newly-elected chairman of the Planning Committee - said it was a question of attitude among members of society.
Coun Ben Nobbs, formerly the chairman, has stepped down after some years and is now the vice-chairman of the committee.
Other issues considered at this week's meeting of the Brigg Planning and Environment Committee in the Angel Suite Lounge included:

BUS STOP: Reference was made to a resident's request relating to the siting of a bus stop on Bridge Street - a matter for North Lincolnshire Council, the highway authority.

ROAD IMPROVEMENT SCHEME: Lincolnshire County Council is to undertake roadworks on the A1084 Bigby High Road, close to the border with North Lincolnshire, on the outskirts of Brigg, near the Garden Centre. Work will be carried out at night, from 6.30pm, during early August.

BRIGG MATTERS: The Brigg Town Council Policy Committee met that same evening in the Angel, re-electing Coun Jenny Bell as chairman for the next 12 months and electing Coun Ed Arnott to the post of vice-chairman. Councillors confirmed that they wish to continue with the regular "centrefold" about Brigg Town Council which appears in issues of the quarterly Brigg Matters newsletter, delivered to households and business premises. Brigg Matters is produced by a committee of volunteers and not by the council.
Coun Bell commented: "A lot of people read it."

BRIGG DIAMOND JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS: CREDIT WHERE CREDIT'S DUE

The Town Mayor of Brigg, Coun Carl Sherwood, has tabled a motion for consideration at the monthly Brigg Town Council meeting on Monday night, suggesting an official thank-you for those involved in organising the town's Diamond Jubilee celebrations, which included events in the Market Place and at the Recreation Ground, plus a parade, on June 4. The organisation was undertaken by the Diamond Jubilee Committee.
The meeting on Monday, June 25 is in the Angel Suite, from 7.30pm. Members of the public are welcome to attend.
Earlier, from 6.45pm, there will be a meeting of the Planning and Environment Committee, during which town councillors will consider whether they wish to express any views on an application to change the use of the former Brown & Co auction rooms, off Old Courts Road, to a retail shop (prior to North Lincolnshire planners making a final decision). This meeting is also open to interested members of the public.

PROMINENT BRIGG BUILDING SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN SOLD

During a discussion among Brigg town councillors last night in the Angel Suite which we attended, it was suggested that 7 Market Place, Brigg, has been sold by North Lincolnshire Council, having been on the market for some time as surplus to the authority's requirements.
The Georgian town house is in the Conservation Area and the buyer is believed to have local connections.
We are contacting North Lincolnshire Council today to request official confirmation about the sale and to seek further details.
You will probably recall that 7 Market Place was leased by our previous MP as his Brigg office for some years.
Glanford Borough Council owned the building prior to the formation of the North Lincolnshire unitary authority. Before Glanford, we think Brigg UDC had it (pre-1974).
Senior site visitors' memories of Vic Gray's cafe will be very welcome! Post them here or kindly email scoopfisher@aol.com

HOW MANY IN BRIGG WILL SUPPORT RIDE TO WORK DAY?

A fair number of Brigg folk still use motorcycles, mopeds and scooters to commute out of town to work.
Monday (June 18) is International Ride to Work Day, when people around the globe are encouraged to ride to work on a motorbike or scooter "to demonstrate to a wider audience just how enjoyable their commute is."
Brigg Blog has been informed: "Riding to work saves time and money. It also opens up a whole new concept to many commuters – that commuting can be fun. How many people do you know who arrive at work with a smile on their face?"
A press release emailed to us on this topic set me thinking how long it is since 'yours truly' moved from motorbike to car when getting to and from the desk in Scunthorpe. The memory is a bit hazy, but perhaps it was some time in 1978.
We have no immediate plans to take a trip down memory lane next Monday.
Memories of two-wheeled commuting from Brigg are mixed. Yes, very nice in warm weather; not so good when the bike wouldn't start or the weather was wet and miserable. Many people reading this will feel the same.
It's cheaper by motorbike or scooter, compared with using a car, and less fuel is used, making two-wheeled commuting a much greener option. To find out more and to see the Ride to Work Day viral video (over 90,000 views and counting) go to www.ridetoworkday.co.uk
You can even book a free ride on a motorbike or scooter at www.geton.co.uk

WARNING MESSAGE ON THE BRIGG BUSH TELEGRAPH

Take care on the roads and footpaths in Brigg at present, as lush hedges and bushes in people's front gardens make it much more difficult for cars and vans emerging from driveways to be seen.
St Helen's Road is a good example. We came down there earlier today and saw two cases of this in a short space of time.
No need to call on the good folk of Brigg to go mad with the garden shears: We just need drivers to be aware that someone might be pulling out.
Note to Brigg and Wolds Coun Nigel Sherwood (Cabinet Member for Highways, North Lincolnshire Council): No problem with tree foliage obscuring the view of drivers emerging from St Helen's Road onto Bigby Road, flagged up by Brigg Blog in past years. Welcome trimming work has been undertaken.

BRIGG FOLK WILL BE HEADING OFF TO LINCOLNSHIRE SHOW

Many Brigg folk support and enjoy the Lincolnshire Show - the biggest spectator spectacle of them all.
The 2012 two-day show is next Wednesday and Thursday at the Showground which is off the A15, just north of Lincoln. Extensive signposting will be in place to show you the way, if approaching by car from Brigg.
Peacock & Binnington are one of the Brigg-based firms to enjoy a long association with the county show and you may have noticed the sign currently outside their premises in Bridge Street to inform passing motorists and pedestrians about the show dates.

Find out much more about the show through this link to the official website

This being the first meeting of the Planning and Environment Committee since the council's AGM, a chairman and vice-chairman will need to be elected for 2012/13.

CHILDREN AT BRIGG SCHOOL GIVEN CHANCE TO SAY IT WITH FLOWERS FOR APPEAL FUND

Parents and pupils of Class 1 at St Mary’s Catholic Voluntary Academy in Brigg are currently raising over £2,000 to provide a fine new climbing frame for the school playground.
Hearing about the project, company chiefs at Elsham Wold-based seed specialists GFP Agriculture stepped in with a challenge for Class 1: Grow us some impressive sunflowers and we’ll contribute to the climbing frame fund – and award a prize to the boy or girl who grows the tallest plant.
GFP’s Sally Thacker (pictured), who delivered seeds, compost and pots, to the excited class, said: “We were bowled over by the children’s enthusiasm. They really are up for the challenge.”
“The children are getting the plants started at home and caring for them for a few weeks before bringing them back to the school to be planted in the grounds so that everyone can monitor progress in the competition.”
“The standard sunflowers that we have supplied to the school grow to six to eight feet, so they should provide a brave show and an interesting competition.”
Class I’s teacher Bridget Forman and early years practitioner Teresa Evans say they are delighted that the firm has taken an interest in the school. This term the class are looking at growing and nurturing living things as a part of the curriculum, so the sunflower challenge is an ideal project.
Miss Forman added: “It is also great fun for the children. We are already getting early progress reports and things will get really interesting when the plants come back to the school, where size and growth rates can be measured and discussed.”
“It will also provide a wonderful splash of colour in the gardens of the foundation unit where the climbing frame will eventually be sited.”

SIVA STARS AS BRIGG TOWN CRICKETERS WIN AGAIN

In recent weeks a number of people, including councillors in the town, have commented to me about how good it is to see Brigg Town Cricket Club still operating and enjoying some success now the new season is under way.
Brigg Town are down to only one team and a few of us feared they might struggle to keep going in 2012. But they have proved the doubters wrong, me included!
Brigg continue to play in the East Yorkshire Alliance division three, involving quite lots of travel over the Humber Bridge to Hull and more rural destinations near the city. Clearly the reduction in bridge tolls will be a big help!
On Jubilee bank holiday Monday this week, Town visited Hull Ionians Coal Exporters 3rds and won by three wickets. It was a low-scoring game, the Coalmen being bowled out for 71, with Siva Siva taking four for 16 in 10 overs for Brigg.
Town were then made to work hard for victory, all-rounder Siva, a new signing this season, seeing them home with an undefeated 31, as Brigg recovered from being 31 for seven.
Tomorrow (Sat June 9) third-placed Brigg are due to entertain division three leaders Roos 2nds at the Receation Ground (1pm start), though the weather will have to improve considerably for the game to go ahead.

BRIGG JUBILEE PARADE TINGED WITH NOSTALGIA

With scores of other Brigg residents I joined the parade yesterday from the town centre to the Recreation Ground, via Cary Lane, Ash Grove, Redcombe Lane, Grammar School Road and Preston Drive.
The final stretch to the bottom end of the Rec took in what's now a play area, but was once the site of "Brigg Prefabs" (known officially as Woodbine Grove).
We paraded close to the spot where No 16 once stood - home to the Fisher family in the late 1950s and early 1960s, when I were no but a lad.
There's nothing to show the prefabs once stood here, but the memories live on.
Families who lived there included the following:
Bray, Bird, Quirke, Parker, Whitehand, Kennedy, Smith, Shaw and Howson.
Sadly, some of the residents are no longer with us, including a couple from my age group.

BRIGG DIAMOND JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS WERE FIT FOR A QUEEN

Freeman of Brigg, Tom Glossop, and wife Maureen enjoying the Diamond Jubilee celebrations in Brigg Market Place yesterday.

By Councillor the Rev Alec Depledge

The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Celebrations will live long in all our memories ... what joy-filled events throughout the nation and Commonwealth, marking the remarkable 60-year reign of Her Majesty.
Locally, our Diamond Jubilee team worked tirelessly, and successfully, to ensure that Brigg's participation was fitting for a queen - they are all to be heartily congratulated for their efforts on our behalf.
For me, several elements have emerged from these celebrations...
APPRECIATION:  We have come together to show appreciation for a remarkable Lady, who has devoted 60 years of her life to serving our own nation and the Commonwealth of nations. At a time when it would perhaps be easy to immerse ourselves in our personal adversities, we have turned to share in the successes & joys of another, and to demonstrate that she is not taken for granted.
ADMIRATION: The strength and resilience of Queen Elizabeth II was nowhere better exemplified than during the River Pageant on Sunday, when apart from a brief break for a cuppa she remained standing, smiling and waving to the armada, and bystanders on the Thames banks. Yes, through tragedies and triumphs she has stood firmly, shining as brightly as the thousands of beacons that lit up the night skies on Monday, in her honour. This is deserving of our admiration.
AFFECTION: There can be little doubt about the outpouring of genuine love and affection witnessed over these days, as cheering crowds have greeted the Queen wherever she has gone - people prepared to be counted, to stand in adverse weather conditions, to wait long hours just for a glimpse (often nothing more), to cheer & wave for all they're worth ... how heartening this must have been to Her Majesty, not forgetting the thousands of events nationwide in her honour
ALLEGIANCE: Such tireless devotion, such long-term faithfulness to service, and such exemplary integrity surely merits the loyalty of each one of us, including those, who churlishly see it as their business to belittle the Queen, personally, and to demean royalty in general. So, may we take this opportunity to review and renew our commitment to those values of loyalty, service and integrity which are so clearly modelled by our Gracious Monarch.
Long live our noble Queen!

BRIGG TOWN MAYOR ON THE BALL FOR CHARITY

Brigg Town Mayor Coun Carl Sherwood yesterday placed a couple of charity bets, courtesy of Ladbrokes, at the famous firm's Market Place premises.
Coun Carl said he had to be patriotic and so began by placing £25 on England to win the Euro tournament at 16/1. He's also put One Foot in the Algarve with a £25 flutter on Portugal at 20/1.
Also a Cabinet-ranking member of North Lincolnshire Council, he knows a lot about local football, having enjoyed a very long career in the game at amateur level in this area.
But Brigg Blog is unsure about his abilities as a tipster when it comes to the top level of the game.
We shall see!
He was given a warm welcome by the friendly staff at Ladbrokes, including manager Anita Daniels, Sarah Nend and Lauren Bonner, who were there when he placed his bets.
Should Coun Carl's tips come off, the proceeds will boost his appeal fund, for which he will be raising money until next May for LIVES first responders and Brigg Breast Cancer Care Support.
