25th ANNIVERSARY OF PRINCESS DIANA IN BRIGG


This week's Scunthorpe Telegraph contains an extensive look back to the famous visit to Brigg by the Princess of Wales - Lady Diana - which happened 25 years ago this week. The Princess came to Brigg on March 29, 1988.  There's five pages of coverage and if you want the lot, better nip out now and snap up a copy of the paper. Our picture above was taken inside the Buttercross by Ken Harrison and shows a photo of the Princess that's on display, as she visited the historic building, unveiling a plaque above the main entrance.

FORMER BRIGG GRAMMAR HEADMASTER NOW 95

H.B. (Brian) Williams is now 95 and will be remembered by so many ex-pupils and staff as the headmaster of Brigg Grammar School and later Sir John Nelthorpe School. He attended the recent annual dinner of the Briggensians' Association. Sadly, Brigg Blog could not make this year's annual reunion. However, David Brittain has kindly provided picture and report, which has appeared on www.thisisscunthorpe.co.uk.

BRIGG LIONS' CHARTER DINNER


Brigg & Glanford Lions' Annual Charter Dinner will be held on Saturday, April 20, from 7.30pm, at the  White Heather Restaurant, Caenby Corner.

DUCKEGG CLASSES IN BRIGG


Duckegg is launching MusicalFitter for 11 to 19s in Brigg - piloting a brand new Musical Theatre dance fitness class in the Angel Suite  from Saturday, April 27.  It will be taught by experienced Musical Theatre choreographer and fitness instructor Trishda Williams.
Classes will be from 9:45am-11:15am every Saturday, the cost being £6 or £4 for members.

COUNTING DOWN THE DAYS UNTIL NEXT BRIGG STORE OPENS

The new Lidl Foodstore, off Atherton Way in Brigg will open on Thursday, April 4 at 8am.
In addition, the international retailer will be enhancing the riverside walkway and providing a cycle route.
The existing Lidl store on Spring's Way will close next week, the premises having opened more than 30 years ago for William Jackson/Grandways.

BRIGG AND THE CORONATION


A question was put at the Town Annual Meeting on behalf of Byron Teague (above) - chairman of the Brigg Town Business Partnership: Has the town any plans to celebrate The Queen's Coronation?
Last June, Brigg hosted major celebrations - in the town centre and at the Recreation Ground - for the  Diamond Jubilee, marking her 60 years as monarch. But the Coronation was not held until  June 2, 1953.
Coun Jane Kitching - also an official of the Business Partnership - said a congratulatory letter was being sent by the group to the Queen.

EXPECT TO HEAR MORE ON BRIGG BOUNDARIES IN THE YEARS AHEAD


The possible expansion of the boundaries of Brigg was among the topics raised during the Public Forum part of the Annual Town Meeting on Monday in the Angel Suite.
There are people living in houses just beyond the Brigg boundary who, some feel, might prefer to be within the town. Examples include properties on the Springbank estate that are in Wrawby, the Water's Edge estate (pictured) that is in Broughton parish, and some down Westrum Lane and Bigby High Road that are actually in a different parish, district and county - Bigby, West Lindsey and Lincolnshire, rather than North Lincolnshire.
Coun the Rev Alec Depledge suggested the way forward was to seek a review "and hopefully get some change."
Town Mayor Coun Carl Sherwood said North Lincolnshire Council was aware of the issue "but it could take a long time." However, he stressed: "We are looking into this."
Town Clerk Jeanette Woollard said residents' views would have to be considered in all cases.
Brigg Blog thinks this could turn into one of the major topics discussed over the next year or two - and possibly well beyond 2014. Obviously, neighbouring parishes will clearly have their own thoughts on the possible "loss" of territory and population. But, as was stressed at Monday's meeting, surely a key factor will be what the residents of these areas think. The amount of money paid to parishes by households through the council tax is very small in the overall scheme of things, so perhaps that will not be a factor of major significance.

BRIGG PUBLIC FOOTPATHS IN GOOD ORDER


The long-serving Brigg Footpath Warden, Tony Parker, was unable to make it to the Annual Town Meeting to deliver his yearly report, so he submitted a written one.
The status of Market Lane remains unresolved within North Lincolnshire Council, but Tony was able to report that public footpaths in Brigg remain in good order.

BRIGG VILLAGE GREEN ON THE WAY



Whether or not you agree that the term Village Green should apply within a market town, the good news is that Brigg is to get one. It will be on what many of us call The Paddock, off Station Road. "It's going through the process now," says Coun Nigel Sherwood.
One of his Cabinet colleagues at North Lincolnshire Council recently took a decision that paves the way for the Green to be established, having been discussed and debate for many years. We also expect a public footpath to be established.
There's much legal and administrative work required to set this up. As is often the case in local government, it's the small things that seem to involve most effort and procedure.
During Queen Victoria's reign, Brigg Town Cricket Club was based on this site - long famed for its trees and variety of bird life.

BRIGG SETS THE BENCH MARK - OTHERS FOLLOW




Brigg Blog made much of the new style Zebra crossing on Bigby Street, close to the Nisa convenience shop.
You may recall we made reference to the tall new lights illuminating the crossing so it can be seen from afar by approaching motorists.
Now Coun Nigel Sherwood, the Cabinet councillor overseeing highways at North Lincolnshire Council, suggests this style of crossing will be used as a template for others across the whole district.
"We will roll that our across North Lincolnshire when we revamp them," he explains.

PROBLEM OF VEHICLES IN BRIGG PEDESTRIAN AREA

North Lincolnshire Council is considering varying the hours worked by enforcement officers in response to concerns about the number of drivers who continue to flout the regulations restricting vehicles in the Brigg Pedestrian Zone covering much of the town centre. This update was given to the Annual Town Meeting held in the Angel Suite.

BRIGG WAR MEMORIAL UPDATE


Brigg Town Councillors continue to give deep thought and due consideration to establishing a policy over names to go on the Monument War Memorial. We expect debate and perhaps a decision during April.
Coun John Kitwood - himself a veteran of the Forces - told colleagues that he'd been down to have a look at the plaques on the front and back, containing the names of servicemen.
It's not many years since the Town Council paid to have the Monument refurbished, the contractor making a very good job of the task.

BRIGG FOOTBALL MATCH IN MEMORY OF 'H'


Howard Stothard - Brigg postal worker, football fan and general sports enthusiast - is to be remembered through a charity football match which will raise funds for research into Pancreatic Cancer.  Known to one and all simply as 'H' he is greatly missed by many, including Brigg Town Councillor Andrew Markham, who has asked Brigg Blog to publicise the game on Sunday, April 21. It is being held at Brigg Town FC - by kind permission of the Zebras. The game will kick off at 6pm, and afterwards there will be a social night, with further fundraising, within the Hawthorns clubhouse. ON THE BUSES IN BRIGG - PUBLIC MONEY VERY WELL SPENT TO HELP PENSIONERS


The so-called Brigg Shoppers Bus is a lifeline to many pensioners and disabled people in the town. It's subsidised by North Lincolnshire Council, and in Brigg Blog's humble view this is a case of public money being very well spent.
Latest "stats" from North Lincolnshire Council show that the Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday service averages 72 users per day - 87 per cent of whom are classed as OAPs. (Figures for the period Sept 1 to Dec 31, 2012)
The council subsidises the service to the tune of £12,000+ per year and each journey made costs the authority more than £1.
The bus runs in three "loops" all starting at Cary Lane - visiting Redcombe Lane, Springbank, Poplar Drive; St Helen's Road, Churchill Avenue, Woodbine Avenue; and Bigby High Road, as far as Brigg Garden Centre. It should be stressed that the bus also picks up passengers on other streets in the vicinity of the ones mentioned.
North Lincolnshire Council yesterday (March 28) ended a "consultation" about this No 91 service, operated by Hornsby. It was asking for "comments on the future of this service."
The reference to "future of this service" should not start alarm bells ringing. We have heard no suggestion that the axe is to fall. Indeed, a council officer who specialises in public transport has compiled a report and added a Proposed Timetable October 2013.
If the powers-that-be accept this report, it could be that the so-called Bigby High Road Loop will see changes. This route is described as "very little used." Indeed, when council staff had a look on Thursday, January 10 they found nobody on four journeys. "Though we are asked about a bus to the Garden Centre from time to time, there are very few passengers," says the report.
Under the proposals for councillors to consider, Brigg Garden Centre, on Bigby High Road, will still be served but by an extended run taking in the villages of Cadney and Howsham, whose residents, particularly pensioners, will be very pleased. So, too, will Brigg businesses, which will benefit from some extra custom.
Copies of the full report from North Lincolnshire Council, complete with the recommended timetable to apply from October, were circulated to Brigg councillors when they met in the Angel Suite for their March meeting on Monday.
Coun Ann Eardley was a shade concerned about the proposed changes for Bigby High Road and drew attention to the numbers quoted for a day in January. She suggested no-one could be expected to go along and buy plants at that time of year!
Councillor James Truepenny described such subsidised bus services as "vital for social inclusion in this area."

PARKING ON GRASS VERGES IN BRIGG

At Brigg Town Council's monthly meeting it was again stressed by members of the North Lincolnshire authority that there's no question of Brigg drivers being fined £500 for parking vehicles on grass verges.
Reference had been made at an earlier meeting to letters sent to residents by the council, apparently  suggesting heavy cash penalties as being one option available. However, members of the ruling group soon responded by saying this would not be the case.
This was confirmed for a second time on Monday. Coun Nigel Sherwood, the Cabinet Member for Highways and Neighbourhoods, explained the authority wished to "engage with all the community" and also study the situation in other parts of the UK.
He said there were many different circumstances across North Lincolnshire, ranging from housing estates to  the parking of cars at Barnetby Top, near the A15/M180/A18 interchange. He added: "Barnetby and Hawthorn Avenue are totally different."
Coun Sherwood said they were looking to have a policy "that helps people, not hinders them."
He was responding to Coun Mike Campion, who again sought clarification on whether what was being said about parking on Brigg estates was to apply to other areas of North Lincolnshire Council's domain. 
At Monday's meeting, councillors did not go over the old ground, raised earlier. But it should be pointed out that parking on verges can cause obvious damage, by churning up the surface. However, in streets like Hawthorn Avenue, where garages and drives are few and far between, parking on verges helps the free flow of traffic.
Indeed - and this is a key point - if streets are congested with parked cars, fire engines and ambulances may be obstructed, or delayed, while on emergency calls to people in need.

BRIGG TRAIN OF THOUGHT


There was in interesting discussion about freight trains trundling along the Brigg line during the Town Council's monthly meeting.
Regular Brigg Blog followers will recall that concern had been expressed about the speed of freight trains on the line which is close to a number of homes, resulting in noise and vibration. Brigg Town Council was informed, together with Andrew Percy MP, who raised the issue with railway bosses.
The suggestion is that if the speed of the trains could be reduced, there would be less of a problem for those living nearby.
Coun Rob Waltham updated Brigg Town Council at Monday's meeting, saying the MP had not yet received official response "in writing." But Coun Waltham was able to explain about the sounding of horns by engines close to The Fallows and Bigby High Road.
Loco drivers had to do this when approaching the little-used crossing on the line near the Toll Bar Farm housing estate (NOT the main A1084 crossing beside the signal box). Coun Waltham wondered whether residents felt this crossing was of benefit. What would the response be if a request was made to  close it?
Referring to the MP's involvement and the train bosses official reply, Town Mayor Coun Carl Sherwood said: "We will wait till we get something back in writing."

CHARITY BOOST FROM BRIGG CIVIC DINNER

Provisional proceeds of £1,600 have been announced from the Brigg Town Civic Dinner held in the Angel Suite last Saturday night. The official figure will be given in the near future, as further cash was expected to  raised after the event.
Town Mayor Coun Carl Sherwood, who presided with his Mayoress Louise Mikkonen, extended grateful thanks to everyone who attended, to Town Council staff and fellow councillors.
He made special mention of the ticket-selling contributions made by Couns Ann Eardley and Jackie Brock on the night.
The Mayoral Appeal Fund will be making generous donations, in the not too distant future, to chosen charities Brigg Breast Cancer Support and LIVES First Responders.

ANNUAL BRIGG SPRING CLEAN: CAN YOU GIVE UP A FEW HOURS?


Brigg Town Council has now issued an open invitation to people and groups in the town to volunteer a little of their time for the annual Brigg Spring Clean.
It was to have been held on Saturday, May 25, but due to insufficient volunteers coming forward the council is now proposing to move the session to the evening of Thursday, May 23. It is hoped this switch will encourage youth organisations in the town to get involved.
Proposed times are: Health and safety briefing at the Angel, 5.45pm; clean-up, 6pm to 8.30pm; refreshments served 8.30pm to 9pm.
Volunteers are asked to wear suitable footwear and old clothes. If you can help, please contact the Brigg Town Council office in the Angel building by April 18. The email address is enquiries@briggmarkettown.co.uk

UPSTAIRS, DOWNSTAIRS - BRIGG BUTTERCROSS IMPRESSES A LEADING LIGHT ON THE COUNCIL


A comment made by Coun Nigel Sherwood at Monday nights' Annual Town Meeting about our Market Place Buttercross is deserving of a much wider audience - and Brigg Blog is happy to oblige.
Many readers will be aware that the early 19th century Buttercross has been refurbished, with a lift added to the upstairs room to make it accessible to those with mobility problems.
Coun Nigel, who was delivering the North Lincolnshire Council report to the town meeting, described the upstairs portion of the grade two listed building as fantastic - then suggested a lot of local people "won't even know it's there."
He was spot on with that comment. I well recall, many years ago, covering the story about Glanford Borough Council's plans to upgrade the Buttercross, and how much money was being lavished on the chandeliers and decor. But it was many years before I got the chance to visit the upstairs room - to attend an invitation-only art exhibition hosted by Brigg Sixth Form College.
The room certainly has a touch of the wow factor about it if a local company wants to impress clients at a business meeting, perhaps. It's available for hire from North Lincolnshire Council.

BRIGG PUB TRIP TO YORK RACES



The coach trip to York Races organised by the Black Bull in Brigg is now well established, and mine host Richard Smith is advising those interested that the 2013 outing will be on  Saturday, July 13,  leaving the Wrawby Street hostelry at 10.15am. The cost is £13 per person - all welcome. "Pop in to book your place for a fun day," he advises.

BIG TURNOUT FOR BRIGG ANNUAL TOWN PUBLIC MEETING

Whether the extensive pre-publicity afforded to the Brigg Annual Town Meeting played a part we can't say with any certainty, but there was a big attendance on Monday night when it was held in the Angel Suite.
"It's nice to see so many here," commented Town Mayor Coun Carl Sherwood as he opened the meeting. "It makes it all worthwhile."
He looked back on the celebrations last summer through which Brigg marked the Queen's Diamond Jubilee -  in the Market Place and then down at the Recreation Ground.
"Singing in the rain" was the phrase the Mayor used to describe the initial part of the celebrations in the town centre. But that, and the event at the Rec, had been enjoyed by one and all, as he put it. He extended particular thanks to Coun Ben Nobbs and Sheila Boughey for their work on the organisation.
The Town Mayor then held up a copy of the Brigg Community-Led Plan - published during 2012, which had been followed by the 20/20 Vision Group through which inroads were being made into a number of issues arising from the Plan and what the public wants to see provided in the town.
Coun Carl made particular reference to the Old River Ancholme, clean-ups having been carried out under contract to the Town Council. Items cleared from the waterway included bikes, shopping trolleys, tyres and wheels. Similarly, the spring clean-up by volunteers and the council had been well supported. The Town Mayor also made reference to the new wall provided along the western bank of the Old River. He described this as the Trent Foods wall, that firm once using nearby premises, but then added a second description for older Brigg residents - Sargent's Brewery Wall. This was "a job well done" and the finished wall had made a huge difference to the appearance.
During the year under review, the Town Mayor reminded members of the public  that the Heritage Centre had opened in the Angel, together with the Cafe Courtyard - both well received.
We'll post more on the Annual Town Meeting later, but will end this update by saying how good it was to see so many members of the Brigg Town Business Partnership in attendance. They took a particular interest in a presentation about waste collection and recycling delivered by an officer of North Lincolnshire Council.
It was an interesting talk. I bet I wasn't the only one there who was unaware that you must not put strip lights and low energy bulbs in your household waste bin. It was suggested that some shops selling these will take your old ones for you and dispose of them in the proper manner - the problem being what they contain.
We immediately thought of Brian's DIY, but can't confirm whether that's the case. If Brian's let us know, we'll advertise that for them as a service to the public of Brigg. Free of charge, of course!

BRIGG RIVER DEBRIS AND LITTER - A TENDER TOPIC


Those interested in removing floating debris and litter from the River Ancholme between May and September 2013 should note that Brigg Town Council is inviting tenders for this clean-up work.

BRIGG FEELS THE CHILL


We took these pictures before 8am yesterday - Saturday, March 23 - in Brigg town centre as stallholders were setting up shop for the monthly farmers' market. Light snow was falling and there was a biting east wind. Not really the sort of weather we'd expect now that spring has sprung.

DON'T WASTE THE CHANCE TO RAISE ISSUES AT THE BRIGG ANNUAL TOWN PUBLIC MEETING


Brigg people can have their say about their town tomorrow - Monday, March 25.
For Brigg Town Council is hosting the Annual Town Public Meeting in the Angel Suite at 7.30pm.
This meeting gives residents the chance to question their councillors or just raise an issue with their elected representatives.
The Town Mayor's Report will be delivered by our first citizen, Coun Carl Sherwood.
It will be followed by a report from North Lincolnshire Council - the unitary authority that provides most of our major services, like refuse collection, education, highways and planning.
The Local Policing Team is also expected to be attend, and there will be the annual report of Public Footpath Warden Tony Parker.
The presentation by the ThreeBs Young People and Families Project will include a DVD of the recent holiday programme.
Next will be a Recyling Your Business Waste presentation from North Lincolnshire Council, which is aimed at traders.
And last but my no means least will come Open Forum - the opportunity to raise issues that you are concerned or even happy about.
"Don't waste it" is the Town Council's advice to townsfolk about this annual public meeting.

BRIGG TOWN BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP CALENDAR

Brigg Town Business Partnership has just furnished us with a copy of a publicity leaflet listing Events In Brigg during the year.
Main billing is afforded to the Briggstock Acoustic Festival on Saturday, August 31, from 11am to 7pm in the Market Place..
Not all the events listed are BTBP organised; the aim of the leaflet is to draw more people into the town centre on these days by publicising what's on offer.
Brigg Blog has publicised some of the dates already, and will be doing so again nearer the time.
However, we'll draw your attention to Art from the Heart on July 13, Brigg Summer Food Festival on August 24 and Brigg Harvest Fest on October 26.
The final date on the leaflet is Brigg District Lions' Christmas Fayre on November 29, when the town's festive lights will be switched on, courtesy of Brigg Town Council.

BRIGG BLOG MEMO TO MYSELF

High time that old Brigg Blog profile picture of "yours truly" was updated to take into account another 7/8 years of  wear and tear. The trouble is, though, I've grown rather attached to the old one. Yet we should set an example, so I'm going to ask Ken Harrison to select one he's taken of your Blogger in the past year or so. There have been quite a few in one Brigg location or another. Or we'll prevail on him to kindly take a new one next time we meet up at an event in town.

WHERE ARE BRIGG 'PARKING POLICE' WHEN YOU WANT THEM?

Like many Brigg Blog readers I'm still unsure  what parking/driving offences are still covered by the police and which have been transferred over to North Lincolnshire Council.
There was a van parked earlier today on Barnard Avenue - the A18 - with two wheels on the pavement, two on the road. The driver had a parcel in hand and appeared to be on a delivery. Further on, in Old Courts Road, there was another van parked up astride the yellow lines.
It's a good bet that many Brigg Blog followers will be able to quote similar examples without giving the matter too much thought.
The response from on high might well be that public-spirited folk spotting such abuses should report the culprits. The trouble is that very few will have confidence in the authorities to take the necessary action to ensure a penalty comes the way of those who park on double-yellows and block the free flow of traffic.
Most of us continue to see cars and vans within the pedestrian area - often within view of CCTV cameras.
We've said it many times before: The only solution is a blitz on offenders with the resulting penalties given top publicity. Once people read that the authorities mean business, the problem will be over in no time at all.


EARLIER START TO MONTHLY BRIGG TOWN COUNCIL MEETING

Brigg Town Council's monthly meeting will be held on Monday, March 25 in the main room of the Angel Suite and will start earlier than usual (6.30pm) to be followed by the Annual Town Meeting. Interested members of the public are welcome to attend both. Among items of interest in the council meeting is the very last item on the agenda - Brigg Town Bus Service No 91. The contract for this is up for renewal in September - an issue involving North Lincolnshire Council.

THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGING ON BRIGG RIVERSIDE


   
The new wall beside the Old River Ancholme in Brigg has now been completed. And directly opposite, across the waterway, the existing Lidl store is to close and a brand new one open on April 4, off Atherton Way. During discussions which took place many months ago, it was suggested the historic Brigg sign (above) needed to be preserved and would be preserved.  It was in the front of the main building at Spring's jam factory - on this site. After Spring's closed and the site was redeveloped, it was incorporated into the side of the store. That was in the early 1980s when what's now Lidl was erected for Hull-based William Jackson/Grandways. In case you didn't know, Tesco plan to redevelop the current Lidl site to provide a much bigger retail outlet in Brigg.

BRIGG CIVIC AWARD WINNERS 25 YEARS APART




Bryrom & Steel is the latest winner of the Brigg Town Council Civic Award for the best building renovation  – and it’s only a few yards away from the 1988 winner in the Market Place. Top is the plaque on a wall next to the RSPCA charity shop, while immediately above is a long shot showing part of both the award-winning buildings.

BRIGG FUNDRAISER FOR JERRY GREEN DOG RESCUE


There will be a chance to Brew Up, Help A Pup in Brigg on Saturday, May 4, from 10.30am.
The fundraising event for Jerry Green Dog Rescue will be held on the first floor of Byrom and Steel - on the corner of the Market Place and Spring's Parade.
On offer will be tea, coffee, cake, a raffle and a one-hour talk from Rosina Myers, an expert behavour adviser. She will be giving an informative address about the work of the charity and general dog training.

JUST ANOTHER SUNDAY MORNING IN BRIGG

It's good to see the array of white plastic recycling bins on the edge of the Old Courts Road car park in Brigg - just behind Wilkinson's store. This recycling centre takes paper, meaning there's no need to nip over to Ancholme Leisure Centre, which is where we've been many times before when reading matter had far exceeding the capacity of the small blue household collection bin.
Just a thought, though. Do you have to get a free parking ticket from the machine and display it in your car  window while making a quick stop to recycle a few cans, bottles or newspapers? I risked it today (Sunday), there being no sign of the "parking police" in the vicinity, and also because there were so few cars about it was possible to get within a few yards of the long line of recycling bins. But this won't always be the case. So our advice - other than on quiet Sunday mornings - is to get a ticket to avoid getting a ticket.

COPING WITH STRESS IN BRIGG

A very, very long working day on Wednesday concluded with attending two evening committee meetings of Brigg Town Council. Having taken our traditional position in the press seats at the Angel Suite Lounge, we noticed some printed flyers on the table for a forthcoming Managing Your Stress course.
Was someone in authority dropping a hint? Or was it pure
 coincidence?
Scunthorpe and District MIND is starting a five-week Managing Your Stress course in The Angel, off the Market Place, starting on Monday, March 25 (1pm to 3pm).

BRIGG SPRING CLEAN ON THE WAY


It could be that the annual Brigg Spring Clean in late May will be on a Thursday evening, from 6pm to perhaps 9pm.
The Town Council, which oversees the clean-up of the riverside and town centre, has received a disappointing response so far to its call for volunteers to turn out and help, despite a sizeable piece within the Brigg Town Quarterly Newsletter, delivered to households as part of the Spring 2013 issue of Brigg Matters magazine.
When a council committee considered how best to proceed during a meeting in the Angel Suite this week, Coun Ben Nobbs thought it would be useful to write directly to voluntary groups, although individuals will be very welcome.
Coun Ann Eardley wondered whether the poor response so far could be put down to people not planning that far ahead.
Some members of the committee thought Thursday evening might suit many volunteers. So the idea was put forward for consultation.
Once a final date has been agreed, Brigg Blog will help to publicise it. It's likely to be during week ending Saturday, May 25.
