COUNTING DOWN DAYS TO BRIGG SUMMER FEST

By Janice Radford

Brigg District Lions' Annual Summer Fest – Sunday June 10, 11am to 4pm

Following the success of their first Summer Fest in June 2011, Brigg District Lions will be holding a second event in Brigg Market Place and Wrawby Street on Sunday, June 10, from 11am to 4pm.
Brigg District Lions are well known in Brigg and the surrounding villages for the charitable and service work they carry out and the organisation of Brigg Christmas market.  The Brigg Lions beer festival which was held recently, was a great success. The purpose of the Summer Fest is to continue to celebrate the town of Brigg and to show off what it has to offer.
Craft and charity stalls have been booked and these will be sited in the Market Place and Wrawby Street as well as in the Angel courtyard and the Angel suite.  In addition there will be a varied selection of food outlets.
The event is being generously supported by Brigg Town Council which is providing a stage and sound system.  Entertainment will be provided throughout the day by many local musicians including school children.
More than thirty charity and craft stalls have already signed up for this event but enquiries would be welcomed from any other stall holders. An invitation is also extended to local groups who wish to promote themselves to come along and join in, either to raise money or generate interest in their organisation.
Anyone wishing to book a stall can do so by contacting Dave Gillman on 01652 651071.

KUMON OPEN EVENT AT BRIGG LIBRARY

There will be great fun to be had at the Kumon Brigg Open Event which is being held at the new Brigg Library in the Angel Suite on Saturday, June 9th.
Any parents and children interested to find out more about the Kumon maths and English programmes are welcome to attend. For the children there will be prizes to be won in the ‘Kumon numberboard’ and ‘Guess the number of objects in the jar’ competitions.
The Kumon Instructor, Craig Cook, of the Brigg Study Centre said: “We are looking to make Kumon available to as many students as possible but realise many people don’t know what Kumon is. That’s why we’re holding the event to allow interested parties to drop in and meet the instructor, ask questions and find out more.”
The event, which takes place between 10.00am and 12.00noon, will be attended by the Town Mayor, Councillor Carl Sherwood, and Lady Mayoress, Miss Louise Mikkonen, who will be dropping in to share the fun. They will also present certificates and medals to some of the high-achieving Kumon students attending the Open Event.
For more information about how Kumon’s maths and English programmes can help your children’s learning, call Craig on 01652 653345 or email brigg@kumoncentre.co.uk  Alternatively, visit www.kumon.co.uk/Brigg/index.htm

BRIGG DITCH CONCERNS REMAIN

Brigg Town Council is continuing to monitor the efforts being made by Anglian Water to trace the cause of alleged contamination of a ditch near the Newlands estate with sewage. The company is dealing with the issue.
Coun Ann Eardley told this week's Town Council meeting that she had recently observed a camera being used by workmen to look at drains.
Coun Eardley and Coun Ben Nobbs have flagged up the issue of the Redcombe Lane ditch at several meetings in past weeks.

NEW BRIGG MAYOR CARL SHERWOOD INSTALLED

A picture of Her Majesty The Queen provides the backdrop  for Town Clerk, Jeanette Woollard, new Town Mayor Councillor Carl Sherwood and former Mayor Councillor John Kitwood at Brigg Town Council's annual meeting last night in the Angel Suite.

Councillor Carl Sherwood was installed last night as the Town Mayor of Brigg for 2012/13, in succession to Councillor John Kitwood, who had completed his year of office.
However, Coun Kitwood was pretty soon elected Deputy Town Mayor, which means that - a year from now - he will be in line to serve another spell as our first citizen.
Councillor Sherwood, who is very well known in Brigg, has chosen Brigg Breast Cancer Support and Brigg LIVES as his chosen charities.
He told fellow town councillors who elected him to the post of Mayor (after a year as Deputy) that it was a great honour for him and his partner, Louise. Praising the work done by the predecessor, Councillor Sherwood said he would endeavour to do whatever he could to promote Brigg.
He said it was going to be a particularly special year, coinciding with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations on June 4 in Brigg and the arrival of the Olympic Torch. These were things that only happened once in a lifetime and the new Mayor thought they would create what he described as a feel-good factor.

The annual meeting of Brigg Town Council attracted a good turnout from interested members of the public.

WHEELIE ANNOYING BRIGG PRACTICE

No-one driving through Brigg minds pulling up at a Pelican crossing to let pedestrians cross the A18. However, how do you feel about being held up by cyclists astride their machines who push the button and halt the queue of traffic? Is there a legal requirement to stop for cyclists who belong on the road, rather than the pavement?  This blurring of previously clear distinctions has been encouraged by the arrival of cycle lanes which have  introduced the concept of two-wheel transport sharing what was, for years, the domain of pedestrians (men, women and children). To their credit, decades ago, the police in Brigg had a strict policy of enforcing the law prohibiting the riding of cycles on footpaths, particularly by children. Those of us who were youngsters back then grew up with a clear view that cycling belonged on roads and not footpaths.
Sadly, the town centre pedestrian area in Brigg nowadays sees a good many cyclists riding about - many of them youngsters. As little interest is shown in tackling this unsafe practice by the powers-that-be as in stopping vehicles driving through the allegedly traffic-free zone without lawful cause. We have publicly-funded CCTV cameras keeping an eye in the sky on the town centre. So how about taking action when footage shows wrongdoing?
PS - Don't hold your breath on that one!

BRIGG TOWN CIVIC DINNER LAST NIGHT

The Angel Suite was the venue for the Brigg Town Civic Dinner last night, with Town Mayor Coun John Kitwood presiding. Deputy Town Mayor Coun Carl Sherwood was joined by family members from Down-Under, while Jim Allcroft received the Joseph J Magrath Award for services to the community.  Brigg Blog's thanks go to Ken Harrison for the pictures.

TO THE VICTOR THE SPOILS IN BRIGG TRAFFIC JAMS

It took me more than  a quarter-of-an-hour to get across Brigg from Springfield Road to Lidl's car park early this afternoon.
The reason, of course, traffic yet again backed up right down Barnard Avenue and well down Bigby Road on a busy market day.
Many motorists look accusingly at the traffic lights and the way they operate. It seems that there's no adjustment to take account of an increased flow of cars. Today, the hot weather made things worse. No-one wants to be queued in traffic in such conditions.
I felt a bit like Victor Meldrew in one of the very best episodes of One Foot in the Grave.
Thankfully...Mrs Warboys wasn't chattering away on the back seat.
Sadly...no Dolly Birds drew up alongside in an open-topped sports car!

BRIGG TO CHOOSE TOWN MAYOR FOR 2012/13

The main item of business at the annual meeting of Brigg Town Council on Monday will be the election of the Town Mayor for 2012/13.
The "Mayor-making" meeting will be in the Angel Suite, from 7.30pm, and is open to interested members of the public. After the meeting it is usual to have a social get-together, which always proves enjoyable.

ELIZABETH COURT, BRIGG, AND THE DIAMOND JUBILEE

Further to your correspondent re. Elizabeth Court on the Brigg Blog,
Negotiating the actual route took a great deal of time and had to be agreed with the Police, The Humberside Fire & Rescue and the North lincs Events Committee.
The route is fixed - starting at 1 p.m. on Monday June 4th - from Forrester Street, thru' Bridge Street, The Market Place, Cary Lane, Ash Grove, Redcombe Lane, Grammar School Road, Preston drive, Woodbine Park and into the Recreation Ground.
We have to be mindful that there will be small children in the parade and the route has to be as short as reasonably possible; to go out to Elizabeth Court would add a considerable distance to the route and there is no easy way into the Rec Ground from the Springbank area.
I would hope the residents of the whole area do organise something in Elizabeth Court. Western Avenue is an ideal place to hold a Street Party.
It is very late now to get an official street closure but it is so out-of-the-way that one could get everyone to agree to go another way round for a time.
This could be either on the evening of June 4th or any time on the official Jubilee Bank Holiday, Tuesday June 5th.

C-C-COLD FOR K-KIT CAR DRIVING IN BRIGG

Just seen five open-topped kit cars driving down Barnard Avenue in Brigg with nothing to protect the drivers from the chilly weather. Hardy souls, indeed, to brave the conditions like that.

BEST-SELLING AUTHOR COMING TO BRIGG

Best-selling women’s fiction author Christina Jones is coming to Brigg to help celebrate the relocation of the town's Library from Old Courts Road to the Angel.

Tickets for the celebratory event cost £5. They are available  from Scunthorpe Central Library, Brigg Library and online at www.northlincs.gov.uk/forms/libraries

BRIGG HOUSE CLEARANCE

The self-made wooden sign was still there this morning near Brigg Monument, as it has been for a number of days, advertising a house clearance sale at an address in the town centre. Such signs and sales were not uncommon years ago, but I've not seen one in Brigg for a long time. It's to be hoped things go well for the occupier who's selling up. A sign of the economic times we live in, or just a case of moving on?

SUGGESTED DETOUR FOR BRIGG JUBILEE PARADE

Will the organisers of the forthcoming Diamond Jubilee celebrations in Brigg consider a late suggestion?
When the parade across town takes place on Monday, June 4 - from Bridge Street to the Recreation Ground, via Grammar School Road - how about a small detour?
We think it might be very fitting to include Elizabeth Court - the housing development on the Springbank estate named in honour of Her Majesty by Brigg Urban District Council during the early part of her reign.
There's room outside Elizabeth Court to assemble the parade for a small ceremony, perhaps with local clergy in attendance. Or it could be non-religious. Perhaps a loyal toast  (non-alcoholic) could be drunk, with plastic glasses raised.
This detour would not add much distance to the existing route, which will see the parade turn off Grammar School Road, along Preston Drive and then through the children's park between Hawthorn Avenue and South View Avenue to the Rec.
For those who are unclear on their Brigg street geography, Elizabeth Court is to be found at the Wrawby end of Sunningdale Avenue and Northern Avenue.
It's probably the case that we're too late coming forward with our idea to re-route the parade - even if the organisers of the celebrations considered it acceptable. However, come June 4, it's to be hoped that something Jubilee-related takes place in the area of Elizabeth Court.

CAR LOTS MEAN LOTS OF CARS IN BRIGG

Inside a year we've gained three vehicle-selling businesses in Brigg.
The latest is on the one-time car/van lot on Bigby Road, close to the level crossing and near the railway line.
The others are on the former Trent Food site, off Ancholme Way, and off Bridge Street, opposite the entrance to Island Carr industrial estate.
Perhaps it's a sign of the economic times we live in.

THINGS LOOKING UP FOR BRIGG TOWN CRICKET CLUB

Cheery news on the cricketing front in Brigg.
With some of us who played for Brigg Town Cricket Club in the past wondering whether it would keep going with just one team in 2012, the lads have made a great start to the East Yorkshire Alliance division three season.
So much so that chairman Gary Smith has sent out a "well done" message, thanking those whose hard work has made it possible.
"Three games in and Brigg Town are putting out full sides and winning games," says Gary.
Three new players from Barnetby have made a big difference, soon slotting into the side and putting in some good performances.
One of them, Majid Khan, scored what the chairman describes as "a stunning century last weekend."
Majid made 116, batting at number seven, in the crushing win over Cottingham at Brigg Recreation Ground.
Fellow newcomers Siva and Sirav made 69 and 39 not out respectively in a huge total of 259 for seven in 40 overs. Cottingham replied with an all-out 52 (30 overs) with all-rounder Siva taking four for 12 and Phil Dewfall two for seven.

BRIGG SNAPS IN COUNTDOWN TO JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS

Brigg Blog is indebted to Ken Harrison for what he describes as further snaps taking round the town.  We see signs advertising the closure of part of Grammar School Road; two views of Byron Teague, chairman of the town traders' association, BTBP, and proprietor of Brigg Fruit, Veg and Flowers in Wrawby Street; Ian Peterie, tattooist,  in his Elwes Street shop with a customer; and Lol Hartmann, of Neighbourhood Services, working to keeping the streets clean and tidy but taking a minute out to wave his Jubilee flag.

BRIGG ACTION TO TACKLE LITTER IN THE ANCHOLME

Brigg Town Council looks set to pay up to £6,000 to get litter cleared from the River Ancholme - by a specialist firm - from the railway bridge on Cadney Road to the M180 bridge.
Councillor Ben Nobbs told a meeting in the Angel Suite that he often got his ear bent by Brigg residents about litter in the river, the Ancholme being a major asset. He feared that unless the town council stepped in, the river would be in a similar state this year.
Councillor Ann Eardley agreed, saying: "The river used to be immaculate, but it's gone from bad to worse."
Town Mayor Coun John Kitwood said: "I think we should take responsibility and do it."
But Coun Jenny Bell felt it was a lot of public money to spend.
Full details of the clear-up have yet to be finalised, but it is thought there will be monthly visits by the firm to clear litter, up to September.
Weed cutting, undertaken by the Environment Agency, will be unaffected.
The worst time for litter is late summer when it gets caught up in the fast growing weed that covers the surface of the Old River Ancholme.

WILL BRIGG GAIN QUEEN ELIZABETH FIELDS STATUS?

Brigg Town Council wants to see the Recreation Ground, off Wrawby Road, and the Donkey Field, near Almond Grove, included in the Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge.
This is a UK-wide programme to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee and London Olympic and Paralympic Games, as well as the 2014 Commonwealth Games, by permanently protecting 2012 outdoor recreational spaces. All kinds of sites are eligible to become Queen Elizabeth II Fields.
Brigg Town Council is making Brigg Rec its "primary candidate" and if more than one can be accepted from the town, it wants to see the Donkey Field put forward, too.
Proposing the inclusion of the Donkey Field, Coun Ann Eardley looked back to its history as a playing field, going back to the 1930s when a football team played there.
Councillor Ben Nobbs said he wanted to press strongly for Brigg Rec's inclusion.
Councillor Jenny Bell agreed, saying: "There's a lot goes on there."
Councillor Penny Smith pointed out that as Brigg Town Council owned neither playing field, it could only make recommendations to the North Lincolnshire authority.

BRIGG TOILETS WILL STAY OPEN

The Cary Lane toilets in Brigg will continue to be opened for the relief of townsfolk and visitors on bank holidays and Sundays.
That follows Brigg Town Council's decision to continue its Service Level Agreement with the North Lincolnshire authority, which owns the facility.
The opening, closing and cleaning of the Cary Lane toilets will cost Brigg Town Council £633.36p for the new financial year.
Similar agreements will see summer and winter planting of floral displays in the town, £1,699.32p; watering of hanging baskets, £1,270.40p; grass cutting and routine maintenance at Brigg Millennium Green, Elwes Street, £679.05p; checking and refilling of salts bins on Almond Grove, Springbank and Churchill Avenue, £355.80p.

TAKE GOOD CARE OF ALLOTMENTS

The tenants of two Brigg allotments are to be reminded by the Town Council about the need to keep their plots in good order. Otherwise, all plots are in good order - at Redcombe Lane/Atherton Way and Grammar School Road. Town councillors get periodic reports on the allotments whose management they oversee.
