BRIGG IS POPULAR TWO-WHEEL GATEWAY TO THE WOLDS

You sometimes see Brigg described as being The Gateway to the Wolds, the aim of the slogan being to inform visitors and tourists, most of whom arrive in our town by car - seven days a week - or passenger train only on Saturdays.
However, Brigg is also the gateway to the hills of Lincolnshire for enthusiasts of two-wheel transport.
Yesterday morning We saw a Parka-wearing group aboard vintage scooters negotiating the Monument roundabout, heading off along the A1084 towards Bigby and the Wolds.
During warmer months, motor-cyclists, in their leathers, also take this route, either to ride roads and leafy lanes in the hills or to journey to Cadwell Park, near Louth, to spectate at one of the historic Lincolnshire race circuit's meetings.
A good many scooter owners and bikers stop off in Brigg for refreshments.
The White Horse pub (Wetherspoon's) is a popular spot, with motor-cycles and scooters propped up on the paved area near the front of the hostelry.
Years ago, of course, nearby Ks Corner Cafe - now occupied by the China Garden takeaway - was a renowned meeting place for devotees of two-wheel transport.
In case you missed our recent post about Brigg Bike Night 2017 it will be held on Friday, July 7, in the town centre
Machines - and owners - of all ages will be meeting up to enjoy this impressive, free spectacle.
Some of them will be riding into Brigg from the Wolds, which will make a nice change.

COST OF HIRING POPULAR BRIGG COMMUNITY VENUE WILL BE REVIEWED

Brigg Town Council is reviewing the current scale of charges for hiring its Angel Suite community venue.
This looks like including comparisons with alternative facilities available locally.
Since the mid-1990s the Angel Suite has been available to individuals, groups, families and companies to book for a wide range of uses, including after-wedding functions, meetings, formal dinners and celebrations of various kinds.
There is a fully-fitted kitchen and a bar (pictured below), which can be opened for use when required.
A review of charges was listed on the agenda at the Town Council's April meeting, held at the venue on Monday evening.
Coun Rob Waltham suggested councillors needed more time - perhaps several months - to consider a detailed issue.
Coun Deb Dunderdale thought that, overall, the hire charges seemed expensive.
Coun Mike Storey felt the council would need to consider how often the Suite was used and by whom. The review needed to take a "business-driven" approach, while taking into account community useage.
"We have really got to look at this very carefully," he added.
Coun Chris Dyson said they needed to know what other venues were charging.
Coun Jane Kitching said collecting such information would be "a big task" taking some time.
Deputy Town Clerk, Alison Hannath, said the cost of staging a wedding-related function at the Angel was 'reasonable' compared to some others.
Coun Waltham's proposal to defer the review of charges for debate at a future meeting was agreed.

BRIGG COMMUNITY AWARD WINNER

Peter Jacklin has kindly forwarded this picture of himself holding his coveted Joseph J. Magrath services to the community award, recently presented by Brigg Town Council in the Angel Suite.
Although we included a picture of him receiving his award from Town Mayor Coun Ann Eardley during the presentation ceremony, we did not have a "stock" image to hand of Peter when we gave the list of winners when they were announced in March. However, we did include pictures of all the others.
Peter gained the award for his work as a volunteer driver and Transport Manager with Brigg & District Gateway Club, together with taking on the additional role as Treasurer and helping out with any other job that arises within the club.
The other recipients were:
Chris Darlington – for his continued support for the Brigg Community over many years, including his activities in support of LIVES, Brigg Town Business Partnership, Brigg Live Arts, Rotary Club and various music festivals.
Karen Deeley - for her efforts in raising the profile of the Women’s Institute and in particular for the recent Christmas community event which she took the lead on, arranging the food, transport, entertainment and other volunteers.
Andrew Markham, Zoe Hall & Lesley Whitehand of Brigg Pancreatic Cancer Group – for their regular activities in promoting awareness of and raising funds for this virulent form of cancer.
Belated apologies to Peter: Brigg Blog has a very extensive archive of pictures built up over many years, but somehow he had managed to escaped our lens!

BRIGG AHEAD OF THE GAME IN SELLING TICKETS

Take your hat off to Brigg for being ahead of the game when it comes to advance publicity.
In the town centre, we spied a notice about a forthcoming fashion show, called Glitz and Glamour - Getting Ready for a Party.
Then we noticed this presentation by costume historian Meredith Towne is not until Friday, October 27.
The event will be at Broughton Village Hall (refreshments from 7.15pm, presentation at 8pm).
Admission costs £10 for Women's Institute members and £13 for non-members.
You can book tickets and obtain further details from the Women's Institute Federation Office at 10 Queen Street, Brigg. Call 01652 653641 or email lincshumbfwi@gmail.com
"An evening not to be missed, so book early," say the organisers.
And that explains why posters are already publicising the event.

BRIGG TEAM IN NATIONAL FINAL TOMORROW: WE HOPE TO BRING YOU SCORE UPDATES FROM THE GROUND

Brigg Hockey Club will play its biggest ever match tomorrow (Saturday, April 29) - the final of the national Hockey Vase competition in London.
A team from Southampton stands between Brigg and the prestigious trophy.
The venue for the final from 1pm is the the Valley Sports Centre.
Brigg Blog is hoping to receive score updates from the ground, supplied by one or two followers of the team who are going down to spectate. If so, we will share them with our followers as the final progresses.
Andrew Markham, a veteran goalkeeper with the club, wrote to Brigg Town Council about the club's achievement.
His letter was considered during the April meeting, held on Monday night in the Angel Suite.
If Brigg triumph in the final, we expect the Town Council will be sending its congratulations through the Town Mayor.
Brigg Town FC twice won the FA Vase - football's famous equivalent of the national hockey competition.
So let's hope for what will be a magnificent sporting hat-trick.

BRIGG & THE OVO ENERGY TOUR OF BRITAIN CYCLING RACE

The official race route for a major cycling event coming to North Lincolnshire has yet to be confirmed, North Lincolnshire Council is stressing.
Soon after Brigg Blog posted news about the event very early on Wednesday morning, without the route included, people were sharing links on social media to what were suggested to be the race route, showing it heading through Brigg for interested townsfolk to watch.
We raised this with the council. However, a spokeswoman for the authority made it clear: "We are holding a local launch event in Brigg on 6 May to announce the route that the riders will take around North Lincolnshire.
"The maps that are available online show an outline route but this isn't the official route.
"At the launch event we will announce all the locations that the cyclists will pass through."
Brigg Blog has been told we're on the list for an invitation to the launch in Brigg next week.
Here's a link to our earlier post which gives extensive details about the OVO Energy Tour of Britain...

SUPPORT FOR PLAN TO BUILD 8 NEW HOMES IN BRIGG

Brigg Town Council is supporting a private developer's plan to build eight new homes in the town.
During its latest meeting in the Angel Suite on Monday night, the Town Council's Planning & Environment Committee considered an application seeking outline permission to erect eight dwellings "with associated and ancillary infrastructure" on land near Engine Street, close to what was once Barnard Street.
Committee chairman Coun Mike Storey described the site as open land, near to where an ironworks once stood.
"It's within our brief to try and get some houses built in Brigg," he said. "It's a good site."
The committee agreed to support the application.
A final decision will be made, in due course, by North Lincolnshire Council, the local planning authority.
The Barnard Street/Engine Street area of the town is just a stone's throw from the A18 along Bridge Street.
Our thanks go to Ken Harrison, of Brigg Matters Magazine, for pointing out that the helpful tourist information boards located in the town centre include an old map showing when there was a great deal of housing in this part of town, including Barnard Street. Also featured is the interestingly-named Happy Land (see top left of the illustration). The map  must show how things were more than 100 years ago.

BRIGG BIN COLLECTIONS OVER THE MAY BANK HOLIDAY - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

With another bank holiday  next week, Brigg householders need to be aware when North Lincolnshire Council will be calling to empty their waste bins - and which are going to be picked up.
If yours is among the many Brigg households which receive a Tuesday collection, note that the following will be emptied on May 2:

  • Brown garden waste bin
  • Burgundy plastic and cardboard bin

Tuesday, May 9 will see the next emptying of green or black general waste wheelie bins, blue paper boxes, green bins containing cans & glass,  plus bags of textiles (if you have one of these).

LONG-DISTANCE RAIL TRAVELLER USES ICONIC BRIGG LINE

In his Friends of the Brigg Line Blog report for services which operated on Saturday, April 22, Paul Johnson notes  people from outside our area taking the early train to visit the monthly farmers' market, organised by North Lincolnshire Council.
There was also one traveller aboard who had read about the Brigg line online and ventured north from Stevenage, in Hertfordshire.
Read Paul's detailed report in full through this link...
The pictures used here were taken by David Barrett at the Cadney Road railway bridge over the Old River Ancholme. Our thanks to the photographer and to Paul Johnson for forwarding the images.
Remember that trains will be running along the iconic Brigg line this Saturday, April 29.
There are three in each direction to Cleethorpes and Sheffield. You can also take a train from Brigg station to Barnetby and then change trains for Lincoln to enjoy some hours in the county capital.

120 of the world’s top cyclists will take on a 172-kilometre stage, starting from the beautiful 300-acre estate of Normanby Hall Country Park and finishing in the heart of Scunthorpe, near Central Park.
The North Lincolnshire Tour of Britain Stage launch event will be held on Saturday, May 6 in Brigg to reveal the route the cyclists will take on September 5.
At the national launch event in Cardiff, The Tour of Britain organisers revealed North Lincolnshire has been given the honour of hosting stage three of the prestigious race.
Coun Rob Waltham, from Brigg, Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, pictured above, said: “I am thrilled that we are hosting an entire stage of the Tour of Britain. This is the first time we will hold an entire stage, but it is not the first time the Tour of Britain has visited North Lincolnshire as the start of the 2009 race began in Scunthorpe outside of the Civic Centre.
“North Lincolnshire is a brilliant place and now people across the country will be able to discover all the great things it has to offer when they visit to watch stage three racing through North Lincolnshire.
“The stage will begin at Normanby Hall Country Park, which is a perfect backdrop for a major event of this scale and after cycling through the wonderful towns and villages of North Lincolnshire the stage will end in Scunthorpe on the A18 adjacent to Central Park.
“In the run up to the Tour of Britain coming here there will be lots going on to encourage people to get out on their bikes and get the whole community involved in this fantastic event. We hope the people of North Lincolnshire will come out in their thousands to cheer the riders on as they travel through the towns and villages.
“Cycling is becoming more and more popular, whether it is for fitness or an activity people do as a family, it is great to see. In North Lincolnshire we have a variety of cycling routes including Ancholme Valley Way, The Ridgeway and Isle of Axholme Greenway. There really isn’t a better time for people to get out on their bikes and discover North Lincolnshire.
“Hosting the third stage of the 2017 Tour of Britain builds upon what is already happening in North Lincolnshire. The area is becoming increasingly known for outdoor activity.”
To keep up-to-date with what is happening in North Lincolnshire in the run up to the Tour of Britain and for details on the event, go to www.nltour.co.uk
Mick Bennett, Race Director of the OVO Energy Tour of Britain, said: We are delighted to be working with North Lincolnshire Council to bring a full stage of Britain’s biggest professional cycle race to the area for the first time.

BRIGG CRICKETERS OPEN THEIR CAMPAIGN

Brigg Town Cricket Club did not enjoy the best of starts to the season in the Lincolnshire County Cricket League, sponsored by Readers.
Saturday saw Brigg visiting the Immingham Blossom Way ground to take on Cleethorpes 4ths in a division four fixture.
Town were short of runs and paid the penalty, losing by seven wickets.
The top five Brigg batsmen managed only 12 runs between them, but Mark Cawkwell (25) and Karl Dixon (34) improved things in the middle-order and Nick Beacock added 11 before being bowled by Jeff Todd, the former Lincolnshire Minor Counties player.
However, Brigg had to be content with a moderate total of 95.
There seemed some hope when Phil Dewfall and Nigel Beacock dismissed the Cleethorpes openers.
But the only other wicket Brigg managed came from Paul Neal,  as the home side clinched a seven-wicket win after 31 overs.
Brigg journey deep into the Isle of Axholme this Saturday (April 29) to take on Haxey 2nds who were also beaten at the weekend.

COUNTING DOWN TO BRIGG SPORTS CLUB'S BIGGEST EVER GAME

With Brigg Hockey Club  about to play its biggest ever match, a long-serving player has written to the Town Council to highlight what has proved to be a record-breaking season.
Goalkeeper Andrew "Sass" Markham has told the council: "This Saturday, the 29th, sees the first eleven play Southampton Hockey Club in the final of the English Hockey Men's Vase
"This competition is the Hockey equivalent of the FA Vase which Brigg Town Football Club won twice in the 1990s.
"The game takes place at Lea Valley Sports Centre, in London, at 1pm.
"This game brings the curtain down on the most successful season in the 97-year history of Brigg Hockey Club, having now moved back in to the town after a long absence.
As well as reaching this final, the 1st X1 have this season won the Yorkshire Premier League and with it promotion to the Northern League East.
"Added to this, each of the other three men's teams have won promotion from their respective Yorkshire Divisions, the 3rd and 4th teams as champions.
"It would be great if Brigg Town Council could see fit to mark this season in some way, though I appreciate hockey has not got the same popularity as football.
"Should members wish to mark it, one suggestion could be at an open day the club have arranged to mark the move back to Brigg on Sunday, May 7th and I would urge members to come down from 10am."
