Brigg Blog is endeavouring to confirm dates for various school sports reunions in the town now that some Covid emergency restrictions have been lifted.
For decades the Briggensians' Association - representing former pupils and staff from Sir John Nelthorpe School, Brigg Grammar and Brigg Girls' High - has arranged cricket, rounders and hockey matches, followed by evening reunions on local licensed premises, plus various golf meetings at the Elsham club and elsewhere.
There is usually a summer sports event in late June/early July, with winter sports held in September and post-Christmas. Golf meetings take place at various times during the year.
Provisional inquiries today suggest that efforts are being to arrange the Youth v Experience cricket match - Sir John Nelthorpe School pupils v Briggensians, although the ladies' matches MAY NOT go ahead (subject to confirmation). However, Briggensians' Golf Section meetings are continuing and said to be going strong.
We'll keep Brigg Blog followers posted as further details become available.
The annual cricket match was held in June for many years on Father's Day (Sunday) later being brought forward to the nearest Friday evening.
The Briggensians hold a formal annual dinner in March at Elsham Golf Club's restaurant, but this gathering of ex-pupils and staff was ruled out in 2021 due to lockdown. It was replaced with a 'virtual' event - speeches being delivered online by SJN headteacher Rob Biglands, the association's chairman Clive Thompson and ex-Sir John Nelthorpe pupil Holly Mumby-Croft, the Scunthorpe MP.
