MEMORIES OF 16 BRIGG SHOPS SELLING GROCERIES: HOW MANY DO YOU REMEMBER?

Veteran Brigg shop proprietor Eddie Instone found our recent blog post about Melias in the Market Place of interest, as did son Tony - a pupil of Brigg Grammar School in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Tony has kindly typed up some of Eddie's recollections of shops in the town that sold groceries, which we are sure will interest many people...

1. Buttons – Engine Street (closed in the 1960s)
2. Hunters – opposite the Black Bull in Wrawby Street
3. Melias – in the Market Place
4. Varlows – in the Market Place (Clothes and Grocery)
5. David Todd – in Bigby Street (next to the Elwes Street corner shop which is now an Indian restaurant)
6. Star Supply – in Wrawby Street (opposite the Grammar School Road junction – it became a car parts shop)
7. Jacksons – Wrawby Street (not Jacksons of Hull Supermarket, although it was opposite where they opened in the late 60s? Run by Ken Jackson and his two sisters)
8. Jacksons Supermarket – Wrawby Street (opened late 60s / early 70s)
9. Davies – Wrawby Street (Charlie Davies until the late 50s and Piercy Kitchen)
10. Rowbottom – opposite St John’s church in Bigby Street, next to Layne’s garage
11. Hewson – Colton Street (run by George Hewson, closed in the late 60s?)
12. Glebe Road shop (opposite Glebe Road School)
13. Co-op - Glebe Road
14. Spar – corner of Queen Street and Bigby Road
15. Springbank Estate Shop – featured in one of our recent articles
16. Instones – Wrawby Street (from 1953 – 1988).

"Maybe some of your readers will remember some of these," Tony adds. "An interesting point is that, during the current Covid 19 pandemic, we are all being encouraged to receive home deliveries of groceries to avoid unnecessary interaction and transmission.
"As you noted in your Melias article, in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s many of the shops above had an errand boy (we even had two in the 1970s) who delivered orders in cardboard boxes using specially designed delivery bikes with a large deep metal basket on the front."
Tony has kindly included a picture of Instones in the early 1960s which will bring memories flooding back for Brigg Blog followers of a certain age.
