Brigg sportsman Andrew 'Sass' Markham set several records and famously travelled around the world, using various means of transport.
Still living in the town today, the well-known Brigg hockey goalkeeper set a new Land's End to John O'Groats hitch-hiking record time on September 3 and 4, 1979 - duly recorded in the famous Guinness Book of Records. It stood for six years.
In the 1982 he watched matches at every Scottish Football League ground in the same season.
This was followed two years later by a remarkable marathon when be came one of the few Brigg circumnavigators.
On November 30, 1984 he set off to make his way around the world, returning to town 1,254 days later on May 4, 1988.
He provided regular posted bulletins from various countries on his route, including India and China, which were serialised in the Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph to inform local people about his progress.
Community-minded Andrew was an official of the charity-supporting Brigg Young Poachers group decades ago and later served on the town council for many years. He is also a former winner of Brigg's Joseph J. Magrath Award for public voluntary service.
With Brigg Group colleagues, he has raised considerable cash in recent years for the Pancreatic Cancer Action charity, and worked hard to raise awareness of this life-threatening condition.

I remember reading about his time in China..somewhere remote, he was arrested as a suspicious person...his escorts then took him out for a meal....and the next dsy, he became a celebrity with the town's officials waving him off st the railway station..thinking that Sass would go elsewhere...Sass got off at the next station and continued on hid trek thro' China...he could write a book!

He once told me he was so glad to see a toilet in Kuala Lumpar that he embraced it. Always one to do selfless deeds in his role as councillor.
