This coming Saturday, March 8, Briggensians - based at Sir John Nelthorpe School - have another home game, this time against Santon.
Scunthorpe side Santon have a very long history in this league. So long, in fact, that we can remember making an appearance against them as sub for Brigg Amateurs A team in the mid-1980s! We think that was at Ashby Ville sportsground in Scunthorpe - now the site of the Lakeside retail park. Long-serving full-back and club official Mally Ayre was playing for Santon in that match.
Who can remember the A team? Amateurs were then one of only a handful of clubs that could field three Saturday sides. Local teacher Mike Stevenson was our popular player/manager. He was nicknamed Hannibal, due to being in charge of the A Team - a reference to that very popular all-action TV series of the period starring George Peppard, whose catchphrase was: "I love it when a plan comes together!"
The Brigg Amateurs A team plan didn't come together very often - we were't a very successful team. But the lads enjoyed their football in the lower reaches of the Scunny League, just as Briggensians FC do today.
