DETAILS OF FAMOUS BRIGG VJ DAY INCIDENT CONFIRMED - AFTER 75 YEARS!

The relatively quiet scenes in Brigg town centre on Saturday night (August 15) were very different to those experienced 75 years ago.
VJ Day - August 15, 1945 - saw hundreds of local folk celebrating the end of hostilities in the Far East and the conclusion of the Second World War.
A social media post on Saturday confirmed that the Brigg policeman famously carried shoulder high through the Market Place by revellers 75 years ago was Sgt George Atton. We had long believed it was George - and that has now been acknowledged by a family member living locally.
The incident was remembered, many years later, in memories penned by another Brigg resident who witnessed those happy scenes. This snippet of information lay dormant in the archives until the 75th anniversary of Victory Over Japan drew near and we decided to put the story back in the public domain.
It's a real shame that no pictures appear to have survived showing the VJ Day's late-night celebrations in 1945.
Relatively few North Lincolnshire communities marked the 75th anniversary on Saturday with wreath-laying in memory of The Fallen. So we should salute the organisers of the dignified 11am ceremony held at Brigg's Monument war memorial.
