I remember the wimmen in me life use to by those dress patterns, then shop for material after which the sewing machine was going 19 to the dozen.
I tended to get called in when the cotton spindle wrapped itself in knots and I was the one expected to resolve the problem.
I could never work out where the blasted thread had to go thro' and got trapped more the once when the neddle went thro' my finger.
Extra bits included sewing machine oil, needles and a special screwdriver.
Someone made me a shafari-jacket..4 big pockets and made from maroon velvet...great for my college days as the pockets were big enough to carry pens, notes, library course books and a couple of cheese sarnies with room to spare.
Anyway..
it was easier fixing a car!
