MORE YELLOW LINES COMING TO BRIGG TO IMPROVE ROAD SAFETY

Brigg Town councillors have been told of a new scheme to improve road safety on the access to two schools.
Coun Rob Waltham, who is the deputy leader of North Lincolnshire Council as well as being a town councillor, revealed the following about Atherton Way, offering access to Brigg Primary School and the "new build" Vale Academy, due to open in January: "Proposals to improve the traffic regulations and make the area outside both schools safer will be carried out over the Christmas Break."

Brigg Blog asked the authority for further details, and the following information was duly supplied through a spokesman:

North Lincolnshire Council is to introduce new road markings along Atherton Way and Europa Way in Brigg to improve road safety and allow access to the new entrance of Vale Academy.
After extensive consultation with residents and businesses, the council is planning to implement a new Traffic Regulation Order which would see:
• The extension of the double yellow lines on Atherton Way from the Lidl supermarket, round the corner to the allotments.
• Double yellow lines put in place around the junction of Atherton Way and Europa Way, and along Atherton Way in front of Brigg Primary School. There will also be no loading allowed in these areas Monday to Friday between 8.30am and 9.30am and 3pm and 4pm.
• A further ‘school keep clear’ marking put up outside the entrance to Brigg Primary School to prevent stopping between 8am and 5pm on weekdays.
Parents had raised concerns about cars parked on the bends on Atherton Way and so the new parking restrictions would stop vehicles parking in these areas, making the area safer for all road users. The order will also address local businesses’ concerns over accessing their yards at busy school pick-up and drop-off times.
Coun Neil Poole, Cabinet Member for Environment at North Lincolnshire Council, said:
“Cars parked on bends or over entrances can block the line of sight for children and families trying to cross the road. By keeping these areas clear during busy times, we can make the walk to school that bit safer. This will be especially important when the new Vale Academy entrance opens next year.
“By making Atherton Way safer for pedestrians, we also hope that more parents will choose to get their days off to a healthier start by ditching the car and walking their children to school.”
