BRIGG SPORTING LEGEND RETIRES

With the end of the current cricket season fast approaching, it's an opportune time to turn the clock back to when Brigg Town's legendary all-rounder Garry 'Gig' Smith finally called time on his lengthy career.
Gig retired, aged 60, in September 2000 - his last Lincolnshire League match being away to Hartsholme 2nds at the Ashby Avenue ground in Lincoln.

Camera in hand, we travelled down to watch his final game.
He is seen  on the centre of the front row in the first team line-up in the final game of the season.
Back row: left to right, Gary M Smith, Lee Fielden, Mick Wescott, Jack Richards, Alan Ford, Patrick Kenny.
Front row:  Phil Dewfall, Col Mumby, Gig, Ross Richards, Pete Mumby.

Gig was still taking plenty of wickets right up to his retirement.
He was also a notable goalscorer with Brigg Amateurs Football Club, and played table tennis and darts to a high standard.
Gig's other cricket clubs included Elsham, Brigg Sugar Factory and East Halton.
Phil Dewfall and Jack Richards are still regulars in the current Brigg Town team, while Col Mumby makes occasional appearances for Broughton 2nds.
