The name/meaning of Derby originates from a Lord Derby circa 1750. He was a sporting gentleman, very involved in horse racing and other sporting events that existed in the C18th.
The name Derby became synonymous with any significant sporting event, but was refined in 1914 when the press coined the phrase, 'a local derby' when referring to a football match between Liverpool and Everton...and the term caught on.
What wasn't realised by the General public, however, at the time, was that the Lord Derby's estate was situated near Liverpool...so the sporting
event (derby) was local to LD.

Ps. The original ground for Everton was Anfield.
The original name of Liverpool FC was Everton 2nd Team.
Then were was some sort of disagreement and Everton moved across Stanley Park to nearby Goodison....and E's 2nd Team was renamed Liverpool and remained at Anfield.
