SIGN JUST A FEW YARDS FROM BRIGG IS A TALKING POINT

 

This distinctive sign just outside Brigg indicates that the large Waters Edge housing estate alongside the New River Ancholme is part of Broughton.
North Lincolnshire Council, the highway authority, put the sign up at this location near the A18 bridge.
"This is part of the village signs initiative across North Lincolnshire," a spokeswoman told us today.
The estate is on the border with Brigg and Scawby but is part of Broughton parish, although our neighbouring town is, of course, some distance away.
Most residents of Waters Edge use shops and services available in nearby Brigg.
We've also seen some of them crossing the road to use nearby Ancholme Leisure Centre, which is in Scawby parish.
If residents of this estate fancy a pint and don't wish to come to Brigg, they can stay in their own parish, Broughton, by visiting Arties Mill at Castlethorpe.
Or they might try the King William IV, just a short walk away in Scawby Brook.
We like the boat emblem on the Waters Edge sign - very apt as the estate is next to the river. However, rather than depicting a pleasure craft, they might have considered  a barge.  For decades, until the early 1970s, barges used to serve Yarborough Mills at this location.
