Our Brigg & Wolds councillors have revealed that they are working on a project to enable North Lincolnshire Council to manage the weed in the River Ancholme during warmer months of the year, rather than contractors being hired to cut it.
Brief details are included in the latest issue of the In Touch newsletter, currently being distributed to local households. There's a comment from Coun Rob Waltham, setting out how it might come about.
We see this as a welcome and interesting development. Perhaps, as the river starts its life in neighbouring West Lindsey, they can persuade the Gainsborough-based district council to chip in towards the cost. The Environment Agency is generally responsible for riparian issues so we'd expect some cash from its coffers for the scheme.
The fast-growing weed which accumulates during warm weather is not only unsightly and a hindrance to boats and canoes, it also traps rubbish on the surface, which is not what people want to see from the County Bridge and vantage points along the towpath.
Our picture here - taken by Ken Harrison - shows a contractor's cutter at work on the river, close to Glanford Boat Club.
