| The signs will seem clear enough to most of us but you'd be amazed how many motorists just drive into the pedestrian area from Cary Lane in Brigg and never seem to pay the penalty for flouting the regulations. |
The latest Town Council meeting in the Angel Suite received a report from Coun Chris Dyson who attended a session of the Brigg Neighbourhood Action Team (NAT) where tackling motoring abuses was discussed. This group includes representatives of the police and North Lincolnshire Council which is the highway authority and involved with the CCTV system that monitors our town centre.
Everyone seems agreed that there are too many abuses going unchecked, ranging from vehicles being parked up in the pedestrian area to those being driven into the Market Place and along Wrawby Street by people visiting cashpoints.
Brigg Town Council has no powers to take action, so it's down to the police and North Lincolnshire Council.
Brigg Town Clerk Jeanette Woollard suggested during the latest meeting in the Angel on Monday night that members of the public witnessing vehicles in the pedestrian area need to report all offences to the authorities so they can be logged.
Town Mayor Coun Carl Sherwood was in total agreement, saying: "We are going to have to start doing this."
Brigg Blog supports that 100 per cent and would like to make a suggestion: North Lincolnshire Council traffic enforcement and/or the police should issue a telephone number and an email address so members of the public spotting abuses of the pedestrian area can report them. Or this could be done by putting an online form on the North Lincolnshire Council/Humberside Police websites. Another alternative would be to have a phone number and email address provided by Brigg NAT. Now so many mobile phones come complete with cameras, people could be encouraged to email "evidence" to the authorities.

Some critical comments -
1. NLC is giving certain drivers permits to enter the pedestrian zone - allegedly without first checking whether such drivers actually qualify.
For example, blue badge holders, according to one disabled driver, just have to present their badge to get a permit.
According to the powers that be, blue badge holders do not automatically qualify...so there does seem to be some discrepancy between the actual qualification rules and the issue of permits.
Indeed, I have seen one permit holder stopping outside Scalini's to buy a bag of chips - and claiming that he had the right because he had a NLC issued permit.
Brigg seems to operate a rather casual willy-nilly attitude.....other towns have clear guidelines....
2. Where do the vintage car/bike rallies stand ......One can't ban vehicles, but then turn a blind eye to such rallies...Similarly, market day traders - ie ice-cream, fish vans use the Market Place.
Any ban has to include exceptions, otherwise any 'offending' driver will be able to claim discrimination insomuch that NLC could be operating double standards and is complicit in allowing 'non-permit' vehicles using the zone without penalty.
