COMPROMISE SOUGHT OVER BRIGG PARKING ON VERGES

Brigg residents have been assured they will not be facing a £500 charge for parking on grass verges near their homes. This was made clear at the monthly meeting of Brigg Town Council by Councillor Carl Sherwood, the Town Mayor, in his role as a member of the ruling Cabinet at North Lincolnshire Council - the highway authority.
He said that, following complaints about parking on verges, a letter had been sent to people in some areas of the town. But Coun Sherwood described the mention of "up to £500" as being "a bit over the top."
He made it clear to Brigg folk that North Lincolnshire Council would not be imposing such a charge and stressed the authority was looking "to come to some amicable agreement."
At the Town Council's monthly meeting, Coun James Truepenny said the parking on verges issue was clearly going to affect a lot of people.
Coun Sherwood added: "We must let common sense prevail." He then pledged consultation to "consider all residents' views."
An important point made during the debate concerned fire engines and ambulances. Would they be hampered by more parking on the streets if a clampdown took place on the use of verges?
One of the main areas of town affected was said to be Hawthorn Avenue, Central Square and Woodbine Avenue. These streets of terraced homes were built in the 1920s and 1930s when few people owned cars and when there was no need for councils like Brigg UDC to consider providing garages or drives for parking.
