BRIGG SPRING CLEAN ON THE WAY

It could be that the annual Brigg Spring Clean in late May will be on a Thursday evening, from 6pm to perhaps 9pm.
The Town Council, which oversees the clean-up of the riverside and town centre, has received a disappointing response so far to its call for volunteers to turn out and help, despite a sizeable piece within the Brigg Town Quarterly Newsletter, delivered to households as part of the Spring 2013 issue of Brigg Matters magazine.
When a council committee considered how best to proceed during a meeting in the Angel Suite this week, Coun Ben Nobbs thought it would be useful to write directly to voluntary groups, although individuals will be very welcome.
Coun Ann Eardley wondered whether the poor response so far could be put down to people not planning that far ahead.
Some members of the committee thought Thursday evening might suit many volunteers. So the idea was put forward for consultation.
Once a final date has been agreed, Brigg Blog will help to publicise it. It's likely to be during week ending Saturday, May 25.
Our picture above shows a previous Brigg Spring Clean held in glorious sunny weather - on a Saturday.

Apart from Thursday being on a work-day....and may I suggest that those potential in-employment volunteers don't really want to finish work and then go straight into a Brigg Spring Clean..... A weekend event appears to be a little more accommodating to all.
And secondly, what visual impact does a spring clean between 6pm - 9pm have have on the public! I would have thought that a couple of aims of the spring clean was prompt a change in the public perception of litter and a bit of self-publicity flag-waving doesn't harm anybody - seeing folks in hi-viz jackets picking-up litter demonstrates to Joe Public that Brigg does care about unsightly and dumped rubbish.
An evening spring clean is a bit like the Wombles secretly cleaning up the town - few will see it and the whole thing will go unnoticed by many....

....and finally, since Brigg TC remains a bit vague about the actual time/date, how can they expect volunteers to commit themselves to a jelly date!

Time and date will be confirmed after due consultation/consideration, Ken. Brigg Blog will inform all, once known. Slap on the wrist quite in order if we fail to do so!
