Having highlighted the merits of the new stores planning for Brigg by Lidl and now Tesco, Brigg Blog today suggests now is the time for North Lincolnshire Council to reconsider dropping the car parking charges in Brigg.
This would not only help our small traders, but would also assist with the traffic flow on the A18 (Barnard Avenue), as it would encourage some drivers to park up away from Tesco.
Shoppers parked in Old Courts Road would, of course, still be able to walk the small distance to use Tesco's new store while they are in Brigg, just as people parking free at Tesco can, if they wish, walk into the Market Place, Wrawby Street and Bigby Street to visit town centre businesses.
This seems like an obvious and worthwhile step to me. What do you think?

I'm not a huge fan of encouraging car use in general, but for a place like Brigg which depends on people form the surrounding area yet has poor public transport, it is possibly a decent idea. I suppose it depends on what the cost implications would be, but I can imagine the figures - including increased trade - would be positive.
A worry might that it would become subsidized parking for those who work in town, leaving little space for retail or service customers. Perhaps an "on peak" charge only for those parking up before 10am would lessen that.
Another sound comment, Sova.
