BRIGG BLOG CONGRATULATES 'HOUDINI' TEAM ON 'THE GREAT ESCAPE'

Brigg Blog sends best wishes to Barnetby United Football Club for achieving what  villagers are now calling The Great Escape.
With an effort likened to the feats of Harry Houdini, The Railwaymen, who play their Saturday home games at the Silver Street ground, have managed to free themselves from the drop zone in EC Surfacing Scunthorpe & District Football League division one.
This was confirmed last night when rival team Sherpa lost 6-1  to Shape Changers in one of the final games of the 2017/2018 campaign.
Barnetby's Lee Fielden said: "Considering on April 7th the side had 1 point, it has been a great effort this season.
"The resignation of Epworth Town aided the cause as Sherpa lost a valuable 3 points and Epworth took up a relegation spot.
"We also have a Reserve side  (in division two) that will continue next season and technically couldn’t go down,  but to stay up on merit and not bring technicalities into it makes the sense of achievement all the greater.
"If you had said in August after the summer we’d endured we’d keep two sides going and reach a cup final I don’t think many would have believed you.
"It’s a just reward for the players and management teams of both sides who saw the season through."
Having enjoyed a brief summer break, the Railwaymen will return to action for the 2018/19 season.
