TRAVEL BY TRAIN TO WATCH BRIGG TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB AT RETFORD THIS SATURDAY

 

There's a rare opportunity coming up for fans of Brigg Town Football Club this weekend.
Having kicked off their first season back in Toolstation Northern Counties East League Division One with a tonic 6-2 home win at the weekend, the Zebras will be away to Retford FC this Saturday (August 10) in their first away fixture.
One of the campaigners trying to encourage greater use of the railway line that serves Brigg on Saturdays has been in touch to say that Town fans can take the train to Retford to watch this match and return again in the evening.
He tells us: "Retford FC play at the side of the east coast main (railway) line, about a 15-minute walk from Retford high level station."
"I am pleased to announce that visiting fans can actually travel to and from Brigg on Saturday.
"Saturday is also one of Retford's market days.
"The adult return fare is £7.10 and is valid direct to Retford from Brigg and changing at Doncaster and Barnetby coming back."
He has taken the trouble to furnish us with the train times (pictured here).
Zebras' fans can leave Brigg station (platform 2) at 11.48am, getting to the North Notts town at 12.25pm.
That leaves plenty of time to tour the market, have a bite to eat, and/or a pint or two, before kick-off.
Coming back, fans need to travel from Retford at 6.05pm, changing at Doncaster for a train to Barnetby, then switch to the Brigg line train to arrive back in town at 7.48pm.
Unfortunately, the last diect train from Retford to Brigg (via Gainsborough and Kirton Lindsey) leaves too early to be of use to Zebras' fans who want to watch the entire 90 minutes.
It leaves Retford at 4.41pm - about the time the referee will be blowing the final whistle - and arrives in Brigg at 5.20pm.
Our informant also tells us that the first withdrawals of Class 142 units are to take place on August 10/11/12.
They include Nos 142025 and 142066 which are regular visitors to the Brigg Line.
Class 142 units have given great service since the 1980s but withdrawals have been on the cards for some time.
They are nicknamed Pacers and our picture shows No 142096 arriving at Brigg station in February 2019 en route to Gainsborough, Retford and Sheffield.
