BRIGG TOWN CENTRE PUBLIC FACILITY REMOVED

Brigg town centre has now had one of its public telephone boxes removed.
Precious few people were using the box on the corner where Springs Parade meets the Market Place, next to the Steel Rooms.
The telephone company gave extensive warning, through a notice, that the facility was to be discontinued on the grounds of economy.
Indeed, it stayed in place longer than suggested by the sign displayed inside the box.
Placing a public call box at this location was something of a surprise in the first place, as another (painted red) was already available at the other end of the Market Place and still is.
The fact that the box at the top of Spring's Parade has finally been removed became evident yesterday afternoon (Friday, August 9) when a heavy shower of rain began as we were walking past the currently empty off-licence premises in that part of the town centre.
We immediately thought of taking shelter in the phone box, only to discover it had gone.
Resisting the temptation to visit Sarah Hardy's Woolpack Inn for a quick pint, we took refuge under one of the leafy trees outside the pub. That offered some shelter until the rain clouds  departed.
With mobile phones now in widespread use, there's little demand in 2019 for public telephone boxes.
It's not many years since another of modern design was removed from paving near the White Horse pub. But we still have two survivors within the town centre.
