BRIGG HORSE FAIR 2019 REPORT AND 24 PICTURES TAKEN ON AUGUST 5

An action picture from Brigg Horse Fair 2019 held on August 5 in the historic market town

Brigg Horse Fair 2019 was held today - August 5 - on the now familiar site near the railway station, giving us the chance to take pictures at the historic event.
This year's fair falling on a Monday did not help the attendance, with many local people being at work; nor did the damp conditions that prevailed for some hours during the morning.
However, more than 200 people were present, including members of the gypsy traveller community and their families who had been parked on the site for some days.
Supplementing the buying and selling of horses were stalls offering crockery, horse brasses and other items, while a refreshment van was open for business.
The sun came out late in the morning, and by the time Brigg Blog left at noon Mr Blue Sky had said ELO and put in a welcome appearance as the event continued into the afternoon.
Humberside Police officers were in attendance, including Sgt Rion and PC Proud, chatting to spectators and traders, while security staff were in place at the entrance to Station Road to oversee vehicles arriving and leaving and horse-drawn buggies being taken for a ride.
The usual safety barriers were set up between the footpath and the road.
We noted a rig carrying an East Lindsey Council plate indicating it was licensed to carry passengers. The rig was available for sale and we later saw it being tried out along Station Road.
A solitary horse - shaded by mature trees - enjoyed the lush grass on nearby Holland Park, while the Stennett's Market building became a temporary stable for the day.

Photographers from Brigg Matters magazine and the Scunthorpe Telegraph joined us at the event, with some members of the public also taking pictures of the horses on display.
We were interested to see someone sketching scenes from the horse fair - the only way to record the action before photography was invented and cameras being commonplace.
