LANDMARK IMPROVEMENTS

Brigg's Monument War Memorial - paying tribute to the town's war dead - is to be restored. The Town Council has delegated a working group to progress the cleaning and re-lettering of the well-known structure on the A18. These councillors, including Deputy Town Mayor Coun Ben Nobbs, will meet with four or five members of the public who have already demonstrated a willingness to support the project.
The Monument is owned by the town but North Lincolnshire Council oversees the highway which encircles the 1920s structure. Once the work required is agreed and confirmed, Brigg Town Council will contact North Lincolnshire staff. It is then expected the scheme will be put out to tender. Generous grants are available for the restoration of war memorials in the UK.
When the town council's property and services committee discussed things this week at a meeting in the Angel Suite, Coun Mel Oades pointed out they would want to get all the work completed before November (Remembrance Day).
Town Clerk Jeanette Woollard said a central lane road closure would need to be in force while some of the work was undertaken, and Coun Nobbs suggested 10am-4pm on a Sunday would mean least disruption to traffic.
Coun Michael Galvin inquired about a crack noticed in the Monument, but the Town Clerk said North Lincolnshire officials had stressed that was due to vibration and not subsidence.
Meanwhile, Llewellyn Gudgeon alerts us to the fact the Royal British Legion Branch for Brigg and District is to have its first meeting - in the Black Bull, Wrawby Street - on Wednesday, 31st March at 7.30pm. Anyone wishing to join is more than welcome to attend, or to get in contact. Email RBL.Brigg@talktalk.net or call 01652 653339 (answerphone) and leave your details.
