BEHIND THE TIMES
It always seems to take a few days for someone to be detailed to alter Brigg's main clock on the Buttercross after British Summer Time starts or ends. But who am I to criticise? Having noted the town centre clock being wrong while in Wrawby Street this morning I glanced down at my watch to see it, too, still needed adjustment. And when I got back in my car the dashboard clock was also an hour behind the rest of Britain.

Time an abstract concept.....although it is still commonly accepted to use Greenwich Mean Time as the basis for World time zones, it is, however, more scientifically proper to use Universal Time (UT) for basing very accurate timing.
To the layman, there is very little difference between GMT and UT; UT ulises atomic clocks which are particular accurate and which automatically adjusts time according to the various variables that can affect time calculations - ie the variable rate of the Earth's rotation and etc.
For scientific purposes, UT offers more precise results - UT, for example, is used in both GPS ship and aircraft navigation systems, so precise positions can now be calculated.
GPS was initially devised by the US forces as guidance system for cruise-type missiles. In the First Gulf War, it was alleged that such missiles could be guided through an open window.....now, it seems that they could be guided thro' an eye of a needle!!
