My old granddad had a saying, 'The balloon's gone up!' when there was a hint of future drama. He was a veteran of the Great War, gassed, but survived on the Somme. Indeed the saying stems from WW1; a common precursor for a pending offensive was that the observation balloons were released to survey No-man's Land and the enemy trenches.
In St John's Church Hall on Saturday evening, the balloons also went up - not in a sort of gloomy-way. but with great joviality. There were balloons flying everywhere - red ones. yellow ones, green ones and blue ones. There was a lot of gusto and it was like the nearest thing to a church bun-fight with senior citizens dobbing - throwing balloons at their neighbour.
The whole slap-stick routine was part of Brigg Churches Together's, The Gift -, an evening of song, poetry with a bit of organised madness thrown in!
The most enjoyable evening was followed by refreshments, including festive mince pies and was enhanced when somebody exclaimed that Liverpool had won the Super Cup final against Flamengo after extra time.
One lady visibly swooned and said that Jurgen Norbert Klopp was her hero and pin-up.....and that sums up the evening - entertaining, a bit of audience participation, a morsel of food scrambled with a flavour of eccentricity, and it was free!
