BRIGG SHOP SIGN PUTS US ON COURSE TO REMEMBER SPORTING HIGHLIGHT

Sometimes signs posted in Brigg shops  remind you of things in the past.
This one caught our eye as we approached the County Bridge on foot the other day.
The notice looks straightforward enough, but the phrase "Taking the bookies to the cleaners" immediately sprang to mind as it was on display in Ladbrookes front window.
Bookmaking companies are experienced and skilled at setting the odds but are occasionally "taken to the cleaners" as was the case in Brigg when Sheila's Cottage - a long odds rank outsider - won the Grand National.
That was in 1948 when the proud owner of the horse, John Proctor, also included Brigg's Lord Nelson Hotel in his business portfolio.
Generous John brought a drink for everyone who was out and about in Brigg town centre that night, and not just those who called in at the Nelson!
