WATCH BRIGG PUMP BLESSING 2019 THIS WEEKEND

Brigg Town Business Partnership is staging the popular Pump Blessing on Saturday, May 18, 2019, in the town centre between 10.30am and 1.30pm. There will be dancing to watch from mid-morning.
Then, at 11.40am, the grand parade will start from Boots shop, on Wrawby Street, and parade down to the water pump near the former Nelthorpe Arms, opposite the White Hart and close to the County Bridge. The pump will be blessed and garlanded with flowers.
The parade will travel along Wrawby Street to the second pump alongside Wetherspoon's White Horse pub & restaurant where the blessing of the pump, presentation of flowers and a celebratory dance will be repeated.

The teams will then dance around Brigg town centre with the celebrations ending in the Market Place at 1.30pm.
The Business Partnership says it is grateful to Tesco for providing the flowers; Wetherspoon’s  White Horse and Dent’s Local NISA shop for sponsoring the event.
Communal pumps provided clean and safe water to many Brigg households in the 19th and early 20th century before piped supplies became commonplace. Most towns removed theirs decades ago but our town kept a couple as a reminder of the era when people had to take buckets along to be filled every day for family use.
