BRIGG ELECTS NEW TOWN MAYOR

Brigg has a new Town Mayor who will be the community's first citizen for the next 12 months.
Particularly well-known for her work with the acclaimed Brigg in Bloom programme, Coun Sharon Riggall was elected Town Mayor 2019/20 during Brigg Town Council's annual meeting, held in the Angel Suite on Monday evening (May 13).
Coun Brian Parker, who has just served a full term as Deputy Town Mayor, was in line to become Town Mayor.
However, with two operations coming up during the next three months, Coun Parker felt he could not undertake the role in full, with the Mayor's attendance being required at many events.
In her acceptance speech, Coun Riggall said she was honoured to take on the role and thanked Coun Parker for putting her forward in his place. She wished him a speedy recovery.
Coun Riggall revealed that the Brigg Breast Cancer Cancer Group would be her chosen charity to support over the coming months.
"They work within our community and I have witnessed the warmth and kindness they bring to support residents at a time they need it most," she added.
The Mayor said she also looked forward to supporting residents of the town and local businesses.
Brigg received many visitors and was lucky to have so many extremely supportive groups encouraging the town to be prosperous.
She stressed: "I intend to be a powerful supporter of independent businesses in the town."
The Town Mayor not only represents the community at events and functions but also chairs the monthly meetings of Brigg Town Mayor.
Coun Parker is now undertaking a second year as Deputy Town Mayor.
