Perhaps we have to be careful about what we bless...the pumps supplied good, clean water from St Helens Well, although at the end of the C19th, the pumps were cause of a significant cholera outbreak in Brigg.
Before the pumps..and even with pumps, folks use to draw from the high water table in Brigg. Other supplies included the roof-top run-off collected in barrels at base of a downpipe..
It was easier for the various bteweries in Brigg to source their supplies from shallow bore holes accessing the water table. However any contaminants in the water would be killed off during the brewing process...
For some time the water from the pumps supplied clean water that didn't need boiling...but by the turn of the 19/20th C, the collecting tanks below the pumps had become contaminated by bacteria from sewage..most of the latter, thrown directly into the street from nearby property....or elsewhere...ie guys leaving the the White Horse after many pints..the pump just happens to be in a convenient place for a convenience!!
The cholera outbreak affected the poorer parts of the town...the snobs tended to have proper drains and wc + treated pipe water...from kitchen taps, even!!!
