Brigg Blog recently lamented this year's lack of Lancaster bomber flypasts in our area.
A few days later we decided to visit the Lincolnshire Wolds Railway at Ludborough for the finale of its 1940s Weekend and were delighted to find that the Lancaster was paying a visit.
Other people from the Brigg area were also there to see The Lanc from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight make a mid-afternoon flypast before a sizeable crowd.
It replaced the Dakota transport plane which was originally earmarked for this sortie.
At Ludborough there was a re-enactment of a skirmish between British and German soldiers for control of an important railway station in France during 1944, in which our boys came out on top.
Earlier, we had visited a pub near the heritage line, and what we saw immediately reminded us of a famous episode from war-time TV series Dad's Army.
Captain Mainwaring's platoon donned German uniforms to take refreshment at a village pub, the aim being to ensure local residents did not become complacent after the immediate threat of invasion had passed in 1940.
When we entered the bar near North Thoresby railway station on Sunday, people wearing German uniforms were waiting to be served.
In the TV episode Private Pike, dressed as a German officer with monocle, ordered a round of shandies. One of Sunday's 'Germans' also requested the same drink. Prost!
