CHAMPION (17) TO THE FORE AT ELSHAM GOLF CLUB

Many people from Brigg and district belong to Elsham Golf Club. This sport is enjoyed by people of varying ages on our impressive and long-established local course.
In his latest update for Brigg Blog, club spokesman Peter Thompson reports on the achievements of one of the teenagers, and has kindly supplied the picture above...

A young golfer is making quite a name for himself at Elsham Golf Club and beyond. Callum Bruce has become one of the youngest club champions at 17 years of age in winning the title two years running.
Callum started playing golf at the age of eight, and realising what the sport offered young people these days, was soon setting his sights high.
“I have really been playing serious golf since I was ten years old and playing at Normanby Hall Golf Club. There the professional David McNicholas started coaching me and I moved to Elsham four years ago.”
McNicholas has been the pro at Elsham since then, continues to coach Callum and it is clearly a partnership that is working. Callum has got his handicap down to plus 1 and qualified for the English Boys Under 18 Championship which was played at Broadstone near Bournemouth last month. Disappointingly that competition was ruined by rain but Callum hopes that he will be able to take part in further prestigious competitions to gain more experience.
“I am looking to play amateur golf for the next three years and see where that takes me, how good I can get and see what level I can achieve.”
His next big date is not far away for at the end of this month he will be playing the North of England Championship at Alwoodley Golf Club near Leeds and also the Lincolnshire Amateur Championship at Holme Hall Golf Club.
“Last year I finished third in the Lincs Amateur and shot a 3 under par on my second round,” he says.
