PURPLE4POLIO: 5,000 CROCUS CORMS TO BE PLANTED IN BRIGG AREA

The Rotary Club of Brigg urges  local communities to go Purple4Polio for a polio-free world.
The Rotary Club of Brigg is helping to rid the world of polio by supporting the nationwide initiative, Purple4Polio.
The Rotary Club of Brigg is working with local schools, businesses, Brigg Town Council, Brigg Town Business Partnership, Parish Councils, church groups, residents and Brigg ATC to plant 5,000 purple crocus corms during October and November not only to raise much needed funds but also raise public awareness that we are so close to eradicating polio.
The colour purple has been chosen as it represents the colour of the dye which is placed on the little finger of a child on mass immunisation days when literally millions of children in entire countries are protected against the disease.
Brigg Rotary Foundation Team Leader, Chris Darlington said: “We really do need Brigg and district support in ensuring that the 5000 crocus corms are all planted. We are hoping that we can create purple lines down mowed verges and areas outside people’s homes and businesses. We are selling 10 corms for a pound. ALL monies raised will go towards this initiative”. 
Last year we managed to plant over 25,000!

President of Brigg Rotary, Julie Whitelock, says: “The world stands on the brink of an historic milestone and we must focus our efforts on the final push to eradicate this disease to ensure a polio-free world. We are now so close to finishing the job with only two remaining countries where polio is still endemic, Pakistan and Afghanistan. So far in 2017 there were only 74 cases worldwide. 
In 1985 when Rotary made the pledge to eradicate polio there were over 10,000 cases being reported weekly. That is why the Purple4Polio campaign is so important to raise awareness and funds. Let’s join together in Brigg and surrounding villages to make history and End Polio Now and Forever. The countdown to history in the making has begun in earnest. Be part of it!”
