PICTURES & REPORT: BRIGG COMMEMORATES VJ DAY & 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF WORLD WAR TWO ENDING

VJ Day commemorations were held in Brigg on August 15, 2020 together with marking the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War

Service veterans and other local people met at the war memorial in Brigg yesterday to commemorate VJ Day (Victory Over Japan) and the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
Wreaths and crosses were laid at the Monument on Saturday, August 15, 2020 in memory of The Fallen, prior to two minutes' silence being observed by those in attendance.
Brigg's Coun Rob Waltham, the Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, was among those who placed crosses at the base of the Monument which has plaques listing the name of local servicemen who gave their lives in the service of their country during both world wars.
The large flower beds were looking a picture, containing colourful flowers planted and tended by North Lincolnshire Council.
Many townsfolk and visitors stopped to admire the commemorative VJ Day display created by volunteers on a raised flower bed at the top end of Wrawby Street. Bamboo was included to reflect the conflict in the Far East, finally concluded in mid-August 1945.
These pictures, taken yesterday, show the Monument, the planting of wreaths & crosses and the flowerbeds near the A18.
Our town's war memorial was one of the first to be erected in the UK following the First World War - 'the war to end all wars'.
The Monument was unveiling by Mrs Stamp, wife of Alderman Harry Stamp. This Brigg businessman funded the work.
