BARNETBY HOLD FIRM TO SEAL FINAL BERTH

REPORT AND PICTURES FROM LEE FIELDEN, BARNETBY UNITED FC

The bottom two sides in the 1st division of the the EC Surfacing Ltd Scunthorpe & District Football League went head to head at Silver Street for a place in the Nursing Cup Final.
Having scored only 3 goals in their previous 6 games, Barnetby stunned their opponents as they raced into a 2 goal lead inside 4 minutes.

Firstly, 16 year old Harry Dunnion ran onto a Will Dawson through ball to chip the advancing keeper then cooly slot home, and Dawson himself then put Barnetby 2 up.
A world class save from Thirkell at his near post kept Barnetby’s lead at 2-0 as Sherpa came into the game.
On the half-hour, Hartley was sent clear down the inside right channel and his centre was met by Dawson whose first time finish put Barnetby 3-0 up at the break.

Will Hartley missed a glorious opportunity to put his side 4-0 up inside the first minute of the second half and Sherpa hit back immediately with only poor finishing and Thirkell  seeing the lead not reduced.
The game ebbed and flowed and all looked like a routine victory for Barnetby when Sherpa scrambled a goal with 12 minutes left.

Two minutes later they grabbed a 2nd and it was game on. Barnetby held firm, though, to secure their first semi-final win in 6 attempts and will now face Scunthonians at Brumby Hall, Scunthorpe, on March 22nd.
N.F. ADDS: We wonder whether any members or fans of Barnetby FC are Nursing Sunday hangovers after celebrating this tonic win!

Yesterday's Division Two derby in Brigg saw second-placed Briggensians beat Barnetby United Reserves 2-0, with goals from  Nathan Watson and Stuart Briscoe.

Brigg Town lost 1-0 at FC Bolsover in Tool Station Northern Counties East Division One.
